Bside Incoming: Marie Midori

Bside Incoming will transport us, once again, to Berlin. This time we’re meeting with a DJ renowned for groovy basslines and trippy melodies, you’re certain to discover some new sounds on an extra-terrestrial voyage with Marie Midori!

Her musical journey includes childhood mixtapes of 90s music, guitars around the campfire on her scout adventures in Slovakia’s forests, and busking on the streets of Dublin, all before throwing herself into the craft of DJing. 

Her late 20s, marked by an obsessive compulsion for collecting music, defined her sound which is at once hugely varied and totally distinctive: eerie electronica, breaks, otherworldly sounds.

Her contribution to the Bside series really is a gift - a venture into her more downtempo, dystopian and somewhat hypnotic records that she doesn't often play out, yet still infused with an energy that urges you to move.

Escape Pods – Daniele Baldelli
Daniele Baldelli is best known as the creator of the Cosmic sound named after his DJ residency at the legendary Cosmic Club in Italy in the late 1970s. Baldelli’s story as a DJ began even earlier in the late 1960s at the Tana, Tabu and Baia Degli Angeli  clubs where he pioneered many DJing techniques independently of the more widely recognised New York disco scene. Perhaps the most unique technique he employed in his sets was to change the speed of records, mostly from 45rpm to 33rpm, to find songs that sounded entirely different for the Cosmic dance floor.
Daniele continues to be a prolific producer as he enters his sixth decade in music with a run of records under the Cosmic Temple name and continues to DJ in clubs and festivals worldwide…

Second up on OK MIX we introduce a good old friend of ours, Newhouse. Been in the DJ game since the early 90s, he's surely a familiar name to most club goers in Helsinki by now. In the mix, the winner of the 2020 World Championships of Music showcases a pile of carefully selected records from all sides of his huge library. HIs idea was to interpret a DJ set with records he could imagine finding at OK SOUND where he definitely succeeds incredibly well without even visiting the shop before recording the set.  Many styles of house music can be heard along this two hour journey. Starting easy with soulful, funky tracks and moving on to banging acid tracks towards the end, Big classics to more unknown gems in the perfectly balanced aspect ratio mixed in elegant manner.

Oh yes, one more thing... Be sure to pop in to OK Sound on Friday where the man himself will be doing a two hour DJ set from 5:00 to 7;00 in the evening and catch him playing later at Stidilä after hours club with Olli. House music all night long!!!

This time we welcome another person who we hold dear. Laetitia has long been a close friend of the GG family before it even existed. She's been a constant in our galaxy for many years and is well known and respected for her numerous activities and adventures in music in London, across the world and these days in her native Dublin town. 

Her work with the groundbreaking Annex booking agency and the newly formed Independent Agency Collective (IAC) sees her working alongside cutting edge electronic artists as diverse as Beatrice Dillon, RP Boo, Lee Gamble, Equiknoxx, Veronica Vasicka and more, while her involvement with the Irish www_Irl collective offers marginalised and unheard voices a platform for expression via radio, sound, art and a plethora of other disciplines and medias throughout Ireland and the rest of the world via monthly showcases on Dublin Digital Radio.

We're very lucky to have her, and we're equally as lucky to have this sublime selection she very kindly made for us. A blissed out, foggy wander through dub textures, ambience, broken pop and smudged techno fringes. If you remember buying records from Laetitia at London's Phonica Records, then you know that she knows. If this is all new to you, well, you're in for a treat.

'By the early sixties, the song on the A-side was the 'hit' song that the record company wanted radio stations to play. The B-side would contain less radio friendly and less popular tracks. In our eyes the B-side is a true reflection of the producers taste in music, there is more personality on that side of the record'.
