Her extraordinary voice fills space with a tonal rainbow of lament, from the wailing of suffering to the sweetest of pensive melodies, all from the badlands of the human heart. Dan Kelly’s densely populated stories of excess and adventure take us on trails through both utopias and dystopias, with the contested Australian landscape rolling out before us like a kind of ironic wonderland. Dan’s troubadour style connects him to multiple histories of song narrative, both locally and historically, but his version of  a narrative in song drips with sarcasm, the lens on relationships and culture skewed to the surreal. In this way his work is an update to the Australian story in music, albeit one where the ground is shifting as climate change takes effect. Dan Kelly’s latest album is Leisure Panic released through ABC Music.
