Composer Rob Deemer has written a new concerto for an unsung hero of the orchestra - the English Horn (the oboe's slightly larger, duskier, more mysterious and spiritual sounding cousin). Titled "Vox Humana" it was commissioned just this year and will be heard at the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra on Campus series with JoAnn Falletta, conductor featuring Anna Mattix, English horn, Danielle Buonaiuto, soprano. Also on the program will be the Canisius College Chorale, Frank Scinta, director. It's this Tuesday, November 15, 2016 7:30 PM at the "MCC" (Montante Cultural Center) on the Canisius College campus. The program will feature:

Whitacre: Five Hebrew Love Songs
Vivaldi: Beatus Vir
Deemer: Vox Humana (Premiere performance)
Mozart: Symphony No. 41 in C major K. 551 Jupiter

Deemer and Mattix re: New English Horn Concerto at Canisius

For some, you never can really beat that classic movie sound. Whether it’s a Hitchcock masterpiece, a Gregory Peck standout performance, or a tempestuous romance during the civil war and reconstruction period. 

On this episode of Nick's Flix, with Nick Lippa, all of the music will be from films leading up to 1962 and no later. It’s a chance for us to dig in to some of the all-time great movie scores, starting with the black and white swashbuckling pirate film that made a star out of Errol Flynn and established him as a “symbol of unvanquished man” during the depression, Captain Blood. We’ll also hear works from To Kill A Mockingbird, The Alamo, Vertigo, and more.

Nick's Flix: Let's Party Like It's 1962

The BPO's first international tour in 30 years kicks off in Buffalo on March 10 and 11 at Kleinhans when JoAnn Falletta leads the BPO in a program showcasing American composers, including George Gershwin whose Piano Concerto in F will be performed in Buffalo and Poland by Conrad Tao who spoke with WNED's Peter Hall.

One of the BPO's latest additions is French Horn player Sheryl Hadeka who will play a recital at Canisius College's Montante Cultural Arts Center on Tuesday March 6 at 7:30. Sheryl will be back at Kleinhans on March 10 and 11 for the BPO's Polish Tour kickoff concert as well. She recently spoke with WNED's Peter Hall.
