Sunday Morning is a mix series dedicated to pushing artists and labels who intend on pursuing the beauty in downtempo/chill-wave music. The focus is centered on experimental yet eloquent productions. This mix series is made in order to wind down and relax after a long night out, or simply listen to something other than dance music. I grew up with record labels like M3rck and Schematic based out of Miami, and have always searched for mixes which included these sort of sounds after a long weekend of traveling. Having not found many, I decided to make this an ongoing series with upcoming mixes by artist like Ruxpin, Lackluster, 214, Deroboter & Cliff Lothar. Enjoy the soundscape. - Daze

Solid Steel in association with Serato (4th December) With the closure of the iconic Berlin record label 50 Weapons, it's seems only right to hand over Solid Steel for a special double bill featuring label founders, Modeselektor and the artist that released the final album, Benjamin Damage. Modeselektor are up first with music from the label by Truncate, Untold, Atoms for Peace and Bambounou, plus tracks from Gabi, Ben Zimmerman and Benge. The German duo told us;
"50WEAPONS has been sort of a house that we built. A house for artists and their creative output. Now it's time to leave that house, but the house will always stay open. Open for anyone who needs inspiration or motivation. We are proud of each and every artist who developed their style using 50WEAPONS as an outlet, just the same way as we are proud of every release that has graced our and your turntables. This mix is one of many pillars of the legacy of 50WEAPONS that will hopefully live on forever. Hardcore will never die!"

Whatever it may be that one looks up when it comes to electronic music, wherever one may search to gather information about the worldwide music phenomenon called Techno, you will come across the name Roman Flügel at some point. The former Frankfurt resident and now Berliner by choice has traveled the world to spread his approach of electronic music, music that in the course of the years has been released on either one of his co-founded or influental imprints like Ongaku Music, Klang Elektronik and Playhouse, or saw the light of day on renowned international output platforms like ESP Institute, Mule Musiq, Hivern Discs, Dial, Correspondant or Live At Robert Johnson. And after more than two decades playing an active part in the scene or being a driving force of certain movements within, Roman Flügel has managed to stay on top of his game – most likely because he does not perceive it as such. Always reinventing, always curious, always on the look-out to combine new and old, always balacing the music and himself out to find the right approach to conquer new frontiers, always creating the unpredictable or moments in music with a whiff of experimental and abstract wefts. Roman's contribution to the art:cast series, namely episode #90, seizes the initially mentioned approach of his music and sees the artist putting together a two-hour lasting journey through former influences. While the first hour or first 60 minutes are a “homage to Jay Denham and his Black Nation label - records that came out in the second part of the 90's and combine the Funk and ruthlessness that is still a pillar and of high significance for a good Techno track“, according to Flügel, the second hour is dedicated to more calm and abstract sounds and marks a counterpart to the first hour.  “Those two poles have provided the framework“ for Roman's creativity up till now and will surely be an inspiration for many up- and coming artists out there.

RA: How and where was the mix recorded?

James: I recorded it in my studio, live, using Traktor, my two custom-made DOWO controllers, a slightly shitty Allen & Heath mixer and a Strymon tape delay pedal, all running through my TL Audio desk and Drawmer tube compressor. DJing through tubes was a new experience—and as you can hear I quite enjoyed playing with the saturation. 


RA: Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?

James: I wanted to make a companion piece to the album (The Inheritors)—several other sides of the same coin or a few songs that influenced it (or might help explain it).

Three intertwining principles that form the foundation of the career of B.Traits. A journey that has seen her relocate from British Columbia, Canada to London, England; cement her reputation as a trusted selector at countless leading music events; start ‘In Toto’, her record label; become an established and respected radio broadcaster for BBC Radio 1 through which she vehemently championed cutting edge underground electronic music for 6 years and become an advocate for drug education and nightlife preservation within her adopted home. Underpinning all these achievements is B’s passion for sounds from across the musical spectrum, and her now well documented rampant eclecticism.

A significant next step in her continuous path to being one of the most distinguished artists in her field is her own record label: In Toto. A desire for complete artistic freedom and a boundless musical direction lie at the heart of B’s decision to start her own imprint, which sees releases ranging from house to techno to electro, and everything in between. Of her label, B.Traits has said: “It is a vehicle for me to put out my own and other artists' music on both vinyl and digital format. Music that I make, music that I love and music that I wish to share with you.” 

B.Traits utilizes her influential position to full effect by tackling pressing issues like the need for widely accessible drug safety information, as well as fighting passionately for a rich and progressive club scene in the UK. Her latest project, an event series titled Paciphonic, explores a combination of ambient and minimalist music, sound and frequency activations, and group meditation. She aims to effectively bridge the gap between what she does musically already as a selector, producer, curator, and presenter, and combine it with her knowledge and practice in self-development and life balance. Through Paciphonic, she hopes to build an inclusive community, to collectively enhance and improve our well-being. 

A skilled producer, DJ and presenter. You should certainly expect the unexpected where B.Traits is concerned – but if there's something you can predict, it's that whatever comes next will be dedicated and unique.
