Soma welcome Glasgow based DJ/producer Secluded aka Hans Bouffmyhre to the label as he debuts with us with his fantastic Mercy EP. Hans has become quite the force in the underground techno scene over the last few years with releases on the likes of Electric Deluxe and, of course, his own Sleaze imprint. With Soma, he brings out his Secluded alias which strips things back with the aim to explore a new techno vibe, inspired by sounds from Berlin & Detroit. Secluded productions are characterised with a deep pounding beat, softened by dubby synth passages and deep soundscapes, creating a gloomy atmosphere. Also appearing on the EP are two peak time Remixes from ROD.

Title track Mercy opens the EP with an old school chord driving this monster from Secluded. Backed perfectly with on point percussion and a quite healthy kick drum, this track certainly sets the tone for the EP  

Pastures takes things on a suitably deeper turn. With a pulsing sub bass rattling through you and a resonated synth line that eerily creeps in, taking the track upwards. Simple yet effect drums work this track straight onto the dance floor as Secluded created a perfect peak time Techno workout.

After his fantastic reworks of Slams Positive Education, ROD is back to bring his unique, old school, jackin’ take on Secluded’s Mercy. Remix One uses the original chord filtered & processed as 909 drums punch in and out to devastating effect. Remix Two loops out the chord sample making this a more hypnotic, looped out jackin techno number.

Young Techno upstarts Clouds debut their hard an aggressive sound on Soma with the ‘Complete Control’ EP. 2013 has been a fast paced year for the two Scottish natives that has seen them release their debut album on Tiga’s Turbo Recordings plus a host of top quality singles to critical acclaim. Their razor sharp production that fuses elements of Techno, Rave and UK Bass music has garnered attention from many of electronic music’s biggest names. Their first Soma EP displays maturity in style as they unleash 3 ferocious Techno weapons.

‘Complete Control’ tears the EP open. A chopped and noisy beat is bent round slashing, white noise covered drums setting the tone for this beastly release. A hint of restraint is brought about however as a droning vocal sample pulses from beyond allowing a momentary rest bite from the upcoming onslaught of machinegun snare patterns and intense drum workouts. 

 3Talisman-Class Destroyer does exactly what it says on the tin. A typically powerful Clouds kick sounds off while clanking, industrial percussion keep the rhythm perfectly. Another well-used vocal cut adds to the groove and the percussion begins to step a notch with hollow drums going into full attack mode.  

39.844 g_mol polishes of the EP in even more devastating fashion. Sent straight from the darkness, this track bursts into our reality with deadly force. Driving sub bass, stuttered rhythms and distorted percussion, typical of Clouds is all there. 

Clouds are definitely making their mark on the current Techno scene with their blistering tunes that pull no punches. This dynamic duo are a welcome addition to the wealth of Scottish Techno exports.

Glasgow based producer Petrichor (aka Simon Stokes) returns to Soma with the follow up to his excellent debut ‘On Tides’ with the deep and thoughtful ‘Some Bara EP’. Continuing in the shape of the previous release, Petrichor has crafted 3 very unique tracks that are saturated in emotion.  

Soma Bara opens with a perfect melody of plucked synths working their way in over shuffling drum patterns, all taken deeper with perfect low end and sequenced with a very live feel to it. This is definitely a journey with Petrichor at the helm.

Jump Spot is the perfect follow on and bounces straight into action as a punchy kick drum rides out punctuated by light synth pulses. Petrichor drops some funk on this one when the track’s subby bass line comes in and once again his signature tweeked out synth livens the track bringing a definite happy feeling to the listener. Petrichor’s grasp of melody on this track shines through as lead synths in the background merge effortlessly together with the main theme, tied together by crisp and subtle percussion.

Red Space closes the EP on a slightly darker note and Petrichor delves head first into the realms of deep, dub Techno. Processed ambience flutters in and mind-melting synths rip through a broken beat and choppy percussion. Reverb & delay are used to perfection as wide-open stabs tear through pulsing up and down really giving this track a darker edge however Petrichor definitely pushes an air of hope into the body of this.

Yet another stunning EP from the Glasgow producer who has clearly defined his sound and path amongst the plethora of electronic music.
