“Stripes” was made entirely and exclusively using just U-he’s synth “Zebra2”. Zerbra2 is a hybrid modular synthesiser that features an expansive FX section, many types of oscillator supporting subtractive, FM and wave-table synthesis and a flexible routing matrix to enable you to effectively wire almost any part of the synth to another. Dynamic processing is possible within Zebra2, but it is not flexible enough to use while mixing a whole track down. Because of this I decided to allow myself to use dynamic processing plugins such as compressors and limiters to aid myself in the mixing and mastering process. I faced a few problems while producing stripes. I found learning the synth quite difficult. Because of the amount of things it could, do I was a little overwhelmed. There was also the issue of CPU resource hogging. The synth being so feature packed meant that it needed to use a lot of my computer’s processing power and needing to have around 20 instances running at once was extremely taxing. To solve this I bounced or rendered the synth track to audio when it was complete, freeing CPU power. The drums in the track were by far the biggest challenge. I ended up researching theory on synthesising drum sounds and playing with drum synthesisers to figure out how the sound was created. I think I ended up with a nice sounding drum and percussion section. The song quickly became a kind of UK funky/house style. Because of the relatively simple sound the genre usually gives out, I was able to replicate the sound quite successfully. I am overall very pleased with the result and have decided to give away the track for free here on Soundcloud.
