Four years after releasing ‘Exotic Jazz Impressions From Hungary’ Budabeats Records proudly presents another exciting selection of some long forgotten and rare pieces of Hungarian popular music.
This time their focus is on the non-existing soul scene of 70’s Hungary, which, however produced a handful of gems that could have been released anywhere in the world and had not disappointed any soul head of the era. Zsuzsa Cserháti was one of the many tragic figures of Hungarian pop history: a celebrated singer who could never use all her potential because of some shady characters of the monopolistic music industry obstructing her carrier. Her two cuts featured on this 10” are the most interesting ones she ever recorded. ‘Puha Sohajok’ is a sensual but tight soul tune, no other title could describe it better than ‘Soft Sighs’. The producers of her second track on here, ‘Ne Nézz a Napba’ probably had a thing for ‘Les Fleur’ by Charles Stepney and Minnie Riperton but hey, who could blame them? ‘Harangzúgás’ is the sole side Anikó Balikó ever recorded but what a song it is! Mellow mid-tempo soul with a slight disco feeling, unmistakably cool. Kati Bontovics has been a renowned singer in Hungary since the early 70’s known mostly for her jazz tinged works, both on her own and with many different acts. ‘Holnap Megállnak az Órák’ is a groovy orchestral soul tune which we would be right to call a paraphrase of one of the most well-known standards of the genre. Originally all four songs were released on very limited domestic 7” singles only now all of them being obscure and sought after even in Hungary. This is your chance to get them on a strictly limited (300 hand-numbered copies worldwide) 10” single including a one-page color book insert so you can pimp up your copy individually.

On side A the forgotten 1984 boogie masterpiece, Revelação by legendary performer Emilio Santiago gets the edit treatment from the TropiCals duo, then, with ’lluvia Ácida’ Budabeats staple Chillum Trio creates a 10 minutes long acidic tropical shower. On the flip Karl Planck, founder of the genius musical time machine known as Radiooooo.com, shows us how to adjust a 90’s dance tune from Egypt to the current dancefloor, then we wrap things up with the oriental tinged fusion house tune ’Scarabeus’ by Balint Boldizsar. The EP is limited to 300 copies worldwide.

The Mabon Dawud Republic, Hungary’s first all-star progressive afrobeat ensemble started as the Fela Kuti tribute band for the very first Felabration event in Budapest, organised by the band itself and joined by Fela’s original Egypt 80 band member, keyboard player and singer Dele Sosimi. Given the member’s love for afrobeat, the jamming soon evolved into a project of own songs. Their republic is a place filled with the soul-warming vibes of a 15 piece orchestra, a place for dancers, a place to escape from the outside world and enjoy the magic that is unfolding on stage.

Tom Caurana is an established figure on the UK hip-hop scene. Budabeats released his concept album ‘Welcome Aboard’ back in 2008, ever since he has put out popular mashup albums (Wu Tang vs The Beatles /  Jimi Hendrix) on his own label, Tea Sea Records. Dokkerman is the realest old school funk band in Hungary.  Besides their decade long friendship it is their common love for funk, soul and afro music that kept them together and led to their debut EP on Budabeats in 2012, which was followed by several singles and an LP on Tramp Records. The main man behind the group is drummer Peter Zimon, he composed ‘Dusk’, our  hypnotic, ethio-jazz influenced opening track.

The title says it all about the latest release on Budabeats Records: The Southern Hemisphere EP features 4 tracks inspired by the immensely rich and diverse musical tradition that South America and Africa offers. Beginning with a slick edit of Letta Mbulu’s now classic tune ‘Nomalizo’, London based producer Petko Turned respectfully reconstructed the track, focusing on the elements that work best on the dancefloor. In ‘Pontos das Caboclas’, BéTé (a.k.a. Suhov) created a laid back yet driving atmosphere, using the main patterns and the beautiful vocals of the original song as written by Camila Costa. In his remix, Chillum Trio added his trademark sound to the Ebo Taylor classic ‘Odofo Nyi Akyiri Biara’, the result is a slow burning, bass heavy house number taking the original to a completely new level. Closing the EP is the Birdhouse collective’s original composition, ‘Berimbao’, a catchy contemporary cumbia tune that any combo in Bogota could be proud of. All titles have been licensed carefully, it makes us beyond proud to be able to say that the Southern Hemisphere EP has the full support of the original artists.

The title track is a live recording from 2008, perfectly setting the mood for the whole EP: psychedelic shaman music with powerful oud chords and a hypnotic Middle Eastern atmosphere.

Kobza Vajk is a Hungarian self-taught psychedelic folk musician who has been playing the oud and other obscure stringed instruments, like kithara or the lute for more than 15 years. His main influences are folk and ancient music of all kinds, what brings these together is his contemporary approach of composing and the oriental technique he plays his instruments with. This release focuses on his original work from the late 2000's with a few reinterpretations coming from established e-music producers.

Following their first 7” in 2018 Budabeats Records is proud the release the debut LP of pioneering Hungarian afrobeat supergroup, the Mabon Dawud Republic. The band started out as the Fela Kuti tribute band for the very first Felabration event in Budapest. In the past two years they created an impressive repertoire of own tunes, the rawness you can hear on their early recordings transformed into a more mature and sophisticated sound, still deeply rooted in the traditions of West-African music. They even toured in Ghana where they had the chance to record with highlife legend Pat Thomas, as you can hear on ‘Gyae Abrabo’. On ‘Na Lie’ they are joined by Fela’s original Egypt 80 band member, keyboard player and singer Dele Sosimi. Other guest performances include Ghanaian vocalist and kologo player Stevo Atambire (on ‘Mawadidoh’ and ‘Talk to Me’) and vocalist Abate Berihun (on ‘Nanu Nanu Neye’).
