Wu Tang Is For The Children (full set)

This is the first in my ongoing 'Cassingle' remix series, one-off stand-alone remixes of tracks I adore and - in remixing them - get an excuse to listen to them all the more.
Jason Molina passed in 2013, leaving behind a faultless and gorgeous legacy of heartbreaking and wonderful music. I first heard him on Magnolia Electric Co (of which the song 'Farewell Transmission' remains my favourite song of all time), the first stop on my ride. His album 'Pyramid Electric Co' followed not long after, the sound of a man in a room with one or two instruments, which struck me directly and immediately. The first chord is a lightning bolt through whatever listening device you choose and is a relentless but subtle demonsration of the sweetest of melancholies.
I chose the first track of that album to remix, again, as it afforded me the opportunity to listen to it in even more detail, and hopefully share his immaculate voice with any of y'all who may be yet to hear him, and with those of you who already enjoy him and his appearances.

CASSINGLE REMIX 001: JASON MOLINA - Pyramid Electric Co

A heated up and hefty remix of the B. Dolan track 'The Last Temptation Of Wile E. Coyote' - the original version appearing on the incredible album 'The Wound Is Not The Body'.

I was fortunate enough to see and hear the original spoken word version of this when I was involved in some of B's tour dates back in the early 20-teens (and a little before). I remember this from around 2015 or so and it was a beautiful thing to hear the emphasis change each night, as if the direction of the lyrics were almost aimed directly at a specific target. Maybe they were! Not for me to know. But it was such a treat and ALWAYS made me chuckle (as I hinted in this remix) when the "...you might want to ask, why would she ever date YOUR sorry ass" line.

I hope some people aren't too young to remember these cartoons either, I mean I'm getting on and they weren't shown all the time but I do remember Roadrunner and Wile E. extremely well. It fell into the same mental folder for me as the old "Catch the pigeon" thing, ah what was that... Dastardly & Mutley? The whole being frustrated at not being able to catch a bird. What was all that about? Why were those cartoons tickling that part of my primal framework? It's so weird. It was fun but that frustration would always end up on me, like I was trying to catch a pigeon or a roadrunner and couldn't. There's so much to unpack with this shit, jesus.

ANYWAY. Enjoy the remix, enjoy the original and cop the album - it's amazing and the backstory (literally) is so heavy too.

A heavy devilish Californian serenade from the homie Hoyt Axton (even the name could slice you up good), which is literally stomps and hollering and nothing else. Haunting in it's own right and immediately grabs you by the collar and shakes you up... I added a savage drum set to it with edits here and there, and played banjo and uke on top, with added hummms and shaker egg. It's a remix / rebuild / re-upholster job essentially, and I dusted it all up nice at the end. Desert stomp holler music. Get yerself some.

The continuation of my 'Cassingle' remix series, and this one's a full pre-Summer freakout session for your April rockbox appreciation. This one's a complete re-upholstering of the original with Roky's yelps and screams fully intact - vocals which casually strut that tightrope line between murderous and being-murdered and perform a one-fingered handstand in the process. I added all the rest of the layers and programming, and forcefed it through the BP console to deliver you a sun-bleached, dusted and end-of-the-day warm slug of concentrated radioactive syrup for your Roky road trip.

CASSINGLE REMIX 005: THIRTEENTH FLOOR ELEVATORS - You're Gonna Miss Me

I didn't use any shortcuts in quantization - it's a long story but my way is usually the long way, and this is an example of that! All the way back in 2009, Buck and I set about creating a project based entirely on words and drums. Among fire, earth, wind and water, words and drums are basically two of my favourite elements. 

I started things off on the 15th of April that year by sending him a rough sketch containing a ton of drum programming and breaks, combined with some little verbal obstacles for him to manoeuvre and play with. He sent back a vocal demo and it was stone cold killer from the beginning to the bitter end. Brutal.

Since then, plates filled up or got increasingly hard to spin/juggle, and this humble project lounged in the garage under a sturdy dust jacket, hopefully awaiting a future unveiling...

I managed later on to wrench the acapella out of the demo, as I was fiending to crank it all up again as it always sounded ill as hell to me, and I really wanted to play it to people! So, after some fine tuning and wheel balancing (and further car analogy tweakage) down the line, here is our freshly painted and road-ready beast, hungry for the open road and with a worn out cassette melted into the stereo.

A mere seven years later, we proudly present 'Studebaker'!

This is a remix I made of Goodie Mob's sick new world order paranoia anthem 'Cell Therapy', in which I used the acapella with a beat constructed from 'Psychotic Girl' by Black Keys. I made this for my 'Go Mean!' mix, which I made for the Monday Jazz website. It's from early 2010.

There is a connection too, in that Dangermouse produced the Black Keys track, and Cee-Lo was in Goodie Mob. Together they would go on to form Gnarls Barkley. Rap nerd trivia FTW.

Goodie Mob - Cell Therapy (Buddy Peace 'Go Mean!' remix)

This is a super old remix I made of the Troubleneck Brothers' better known track 'Back To The Hip Hop'. I always liked them, since hearing 'Troubleneck Wreck' on Max N' Dave's show on Kiss FM back in 1993 - they were kind of equal parts Onyx and Wu Tang but never really blew up (but they did get a fair bit of fame off tracks like the original of this one here). Anyway, this remix is from around 2002 or so, I programmed it all on the MPC and laid the vocals on top. Nothing too fancy, just an early collage type affair - I hope you like it! Slightly ropey sound quality and all... x/BP

This is the Buck megamix from 2007. I'll show you the write-up I made all that time ago, which I put on my Myspace page at the time. Things have changed a lot since then... Anyway, here is some more info straight from 2007:

"...Dang! Here it is y'all. If you've managed to keep up with big Buck's movements this year then you'll hopefully be aware of his stunning new album, due October 30th this year, entitled 'Situation', with the year of 1957 featuring strongly in the album's narrative. With Skratch Bastid at the helm on the production (with a little help from DJ Signify), it's a stunning set with perhaps more of a straight up hip hop sound this time around. The beats and rhymes are just insane, seriously if you enjoy Buck 65 then you'll fall for this without a shadow of a doubt.

I completed this megamix around the start of October for the release of the album, and being something of a Buck librarian since the early days, must have been the first release of Vertex or thereabouts, I've got a fair bit of Buck in my collection so I've always had some ideas about what I might do if I was ever approached with this kind of assignment. So it was such a pleasure to be approached to complete this in an official capacity. I used parts from the 'Situation' as well as bits and pieces from the Buck back catalogue with some rarities and goodies, as well as the odd original sample here and there too.

'Films To Be Buried With' with Brett Goldstein (main theme)

I was invited on board Buck 65's incredible '20 Odd Years' album to provide some scratches to some of the tracks ('Gee Whiz', 'Zombie Delight' and 'Lights Out'). I was involved with some live show edits for a few other bits and pieces for Buck's shows too, and we worked on a bunch of tracks in various ways afterwards. This is a remix I made for Zombie Delight, which wasn't officially released (it appeared on a couple of blogs here and there), but I wanted to share it as it's pretty hefty and it's a nice alternative version. Definitely peep the original track though... I'll try and post up the vocal version here soon but I thought I could show you the beat for it in the meantime.

Zombie Delight (Buck 65 remix instrumental)

Believe me, I don't take 'They Reminisce Over You' lightly... This is one of my all time absolute favourite tracks, hip hop or otherwise, and it's not something I'd just throw anything under or risk messing with it just for fun. So let me explain the beat in the background a bit first...

I was working on some things with Buck 65 from around 2009 to 2011-ish, and we got a lot done in that time. Some of it has come out (the Dirtbike albums, 20 Odd Years, and a few extra bits and pieces), and some of it just hasn't been possible to complete. We'll hopefully get ther eventually but it's cool, it'll happen sometime. I made some tracks for Buck to use in live performances, and I decided to go all out with the Amelie soundtrack composed by the phenomenal Yann Tiersen (who would later work with the god Sage Francis on 'The Best Of Times'). I edited it a fair bit and lined up some breaks and extras here and there, and got it all in line with Buck's 'Wicked And Weird', so all the verses and choruses would hit at the right times. I've seen him do it live and he just kills it like crazy.

I really wanted to play the beat to folks, I love the soundtrack so much and I like how this version turned out, and so I thought it would be a good chance to try and combine it with a carved-in-marble classic like TROY. So this is what we have here, with a few additional edits and tweaks on that beat I made for Buck.

Like I say, I know the weight of what I'm using, and the power of classics like this. I grew up listening to hip hop and revisiting my favourites constantly, and I hold this one sacred!

I hope you like this version of it anyway, and that somewhere in the world, Pete Rock isn't shaking his head in disapproval. I'll settle for a 3 o' clock half-mast thumbs up...

'Electric Mud' and 'The Howlin' Wolf Album' are pretty much perfect to me. I could happily sit and listen to both on rotation for longer than would be considered regular or healthy. I have done just that on many occasions, in fact.

So with this in mind, my instinct to dissect and forensically examine the music I truly love was too hard to resist and ultimately, this led to what you have here. These are two albums that to me, if I may put them in a modern perspective, bang relentlessly and thoroughly in every way and I love them so hard. It felt like it would be too easy to just snatch straight up loops from them (although that would sound wonderful of course), and I had the thought of making some re-edits in some way or another, but I decided on reconstructing them both and blending them together in that way.

This is produced from well over 750 chops of both albums combined.

If you haven't yet heard 'Electric Mud' by Muddy Waters, or 'The Howlin' Wolf Album', I cannot recommend them highly enough. Try and find them on vinyl if you can- trust me. If not, get yourself the CDs. If you are already familiar with both albums, I hope you enjoy what I've created from them.

This is a remix I made in 2010 of a Ralph Stanley track blended with elements from a Mogwai track. I love each track in its own right, and I wanted to put them in a cage and see what happened. Perverse huh? This is the result.

My good friend B. Dolan used this for the promo video for his 'Church Of Love And Ruin' tour, which kicks off in February 2011. Here's the link:

Hunted By Death (Ralph Stanley meets Mogwai)

This is the backing track I put together for Buck 65, for his performance at the Knitting Factory NYC, on Thursday 18th December 2008. I had two instrumentals ('Indestructible Sam' and 'Blood Of A Young Wolf'), as well as bits and pieces from my own collection (being a sincere Buck nerd), and after some set-list discussion I went about producing this so it linked and flowed like a mix. It wasn't unlike the megamix I made in 2007.

I did a lot of chopping and editing, and replayed some elements here and there (some keys and extra things here and there), and added a few cuts in places too. It was cool to remake 'Pack Animal' as well, I love the orignal so much so it was great to make it from scratch. I wish I could have done all this in person at the show but it was impossible unfortunately - I saw some footage though and Buck totally smashed the heck out of it. Unbelievable.
