Tune Wrangler - 2015

1.	Oh Woody: 
My friend Joe turned me onto Woody Guthrie our junior year of high school and something about his plain spoken and worldly voice immediately spoke to me. Then, during Woody’s 100th Birthday year, my friend Kurt and I decided to head out from our home along the banks of the Columbia River in Vancouver, WA, to drive up-river towards Canada, and then back down the other side.

We listened to a LOT of Woody on that trip, camped out along the way, and visited many of the sights he sang about during the time he spent in the Pacific Northwest. For one month, making $266.66 employed by the U.S. Government, Woody wrote 26 songs including ‘Roll on Columbia’, ‘Grand Coulee Dam’ and ‘Pastures of Plenty’. And we saw for better or worse, what ‘progress’ on the river looked like some 70 years after he’d had been there. So I started writing this song as a letter to Woody, wanting to know what he’d think if he could see the Columbia River now and this place I call ‘Home’, but mostly I just ended up missing him all the more…

P.S: This is dedicated to Woody’s younger sister Mary Jo Guthrie Edgmon, to my good friends in Oklahoma, and the people I’ve met at the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in Okemah--you folks are Awesome! Special ‘Thanks’ to Brent Rogers at REX Studio for the chord suggestion and to my dear friend Sharman Smith, who helped the chorus take shape right there in her living room when the song was still brand new…

Oh Woody

2.	What I’m Lookin’ For:
I probably spend too much daydreaming about moving to the country, or some idyllic small town, where the pace of life is slower, you might get to know your neighbors, and you can still see the Milky Way at night. But I do, because frankly in our increasingly high-tech ‘connected’ world I feel more and more ‘disconnected’ by the seemingly endless barrage of new technology that I can’t possibly keep up with. I hear people extol the virtue of being able to access all of their computer data anywhere at anytime and I usually think: I want to get it the car and go someplace where I CAN’T access it, and listen to the birds sing for a while. Then again, I also like hand written letters and reading an actual newspaper, so maybe I’ve already become a curmudgeon.

This song is a bit of a ‘Mission Statement’ for me. Half a dozen years ago in a twist of fate, I happened to come upon a piece of land up Highway 142 in Klickitat, WA. I camp out there occasionally and always on the Winter Solstice, in the snow or whatever the longest night of the year brings. There’s a lovely view of the canyon, up and down the river, a seasonal creek that runs through a mix of Oregon White Oaks and Ponderosa Pines and blissfully, really spotty cell phone service. You can see ALL the stars at night and hear the Klickitat River when you close your eyes. In the morning, I sit on a rickety old picnic bench halfway up the hill; listen to the birds waking up, and dream of some day sitting on my own front porch at that very spot…

What I'm Lookin' For

3.	(I Deal with) Crazy ALL Day:
I tell this story of this song all the time. Come to a show and you’ll for sure hear it. This one is dedicated to everyone who DOES deal with Crazy ALL Day---You know who you are. Keep the faith, your sense of humor and hang in there. We need Ya’!! 

And it also goes out to Officer Henderson, who pulled me over one day after capturing a mile or so of my…umm…driving, on his high-definition dash camera. When he walked up to my car I noticed he was red-in-the-face livid. I lowered the window and the first thing he said to me wasn’t ‘Driver’s license and registration please’ (I know the drill) but instead said ‘Give me one—just ONE—good reason, why I shouldn’t take you to jail right now?’ So a Big Thanks for the ‘Warning’ Sir and for letting me get on down the highway to the next gig. I took to heart what you said, and I truly am trying to ‘Take it slower’…

(I Deal With) Crazy ALL Day

4.	Do You Ride Horses:
I met an older woman in her house one day and looking around she had pictures all over the walls, family photos mostly. There were lots in black and white and a number of them had her husband Jim, sitting up on his horse. She also had a coat rack full of Jim’s old Stetson hats---beaver, wool, and straw. She asked me ‘Are you a cowboy? “Umm, no Maam” ‘Well, Do You Ride Horses?’ Then she told me Jim’s story.

The story takes place in one of my favorite places, the Southeast corner of the Oregon desert, where it comes together with Idaho and Nevada, down near the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge. It’s wide open sagebrush country, the sort of place you can get lost just being there. It’s also beautiful in the late afternoon light on that desolate 2 lane stretch of Highway 140, coming around a curve, and seeing a herd of wild horses, still running free…

Special ‘Thanks’ to Roland Brown’ for telling me “Dan, that might have been the best song I heard all festival” then asked kindly “if there’s one line---just one line---I’d ask you to consider changing it’d be the last one”…So I did, because Roland was right and the line was wrong. And to Jonathan Byrd who told me at 3am just after I’d written it ‘Bull’s-eye!’ Thanks Gentlemen!

Do You Ride Horses

5.	Cowboy Style:
Gene Autry made 93 movies. As of this writing I’ve seen 83 of them. They’re all exactly the same, and yet completely different. One of my favorite things to do is to spend a perfectly good Sunday afternoon with a grilled cheese sandwich an ice cold Miller High-Life down in the basement watching some old Western. I’m not real particular so if I’ve seen it before I’ll probably watch it again. I may even sneak a little nap in. 

The thing is, as I’ve gotten older I appreciate the simplicity of Old West---or at least the one that’s portrayed on the silver screen. There are good guys and bad guys and still something to be said for honesty, integrity, a ‘code’ of sorts, occasionally drinking whiskey for breakfast, and always tipping your hat to a pretty girl. So I wrote this like you’d write a ‘Will’, sort of instructions of what I’d like my friends to do when my time has come. Head up Highway 142 about 10 miles, bring my guitar and a little bourbon. Go another mile past the bridge, then up the dirt drive on the left. The rest is up to you. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, ‘John 5:28’ in the New King James Version is: “Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice.” That was pure serendipity…

This is dedicated to Jessica and Matt in Tucson, AZ, and with a big tip of my Stetson to their Dad ‘Bob’. R.I.P. Cowboy.

Cowboy Style

6.	Leaving Texas:  
There’s something about ‘Texas’ that inspired a cultural mythology that’s been celebrated in movies, books and songs ever since Davie Crockett famously said “You may all go to hell and I will go to Texas’. I personally fell in love with Texas through the people I met at the Kerrville Folk Festival, which is unlike any other festival in the country. It’s an 18 day campout, like Woodstock for songwriters.

I drove there 2,500 miles (one way) on a whim, and when I showed up the first person I met said ‘Welcome Home’. It’s THAT kind of place: filled with free spirits, good friends, unpredictable weather and great music. I don’t how to say it any better but there’s just something about Texas and the people I’ve met there that sticks with me long after I’ve left. Nowadays, traveling around, every once in a while I’ll meet someone who will ask me ‘Are you from Texas?’ and I can’t think of nicer thing to say to a stranger except maybe ‘Welcome Home’.

Leaving Texas

7.	Waiting on a Star: 
One morning online I happened to see a video of a hearse carrying a very famous singer who’d died recently (and tragically—too young and too strung out), driving past a throng of fans at her funeral, heading slowly through town. But it struck me that this wasn’t Hollywood: this was the town she’d grown up in, and the well wishers standing side by side, in the cold rain, were simply trying to grieve and hoping to catch a glimpse of her one last time. Ultimately everyone handles fame differently—some with grace while others never do adjust to it. It’s hard to say why, but that Tuesday, an icon got laid to rest while her fans stood under their umbrellas and sang her songs. In some ways, that feels to me like more than one can expect to accomplish in this lifetime. This is for her…

‘Thanks’ to Don Metz who gave me reason to believe in this song when I had more or less written it off. Don knows the old ‘Blue Highways’ better than anyone I know…

8.	Spinning my Wheels: 
Some songs take an hour to write, some take a week and some take a year. This one took 20 years (or longer). I had to live it first, get good and fed up with myself and eventually learn that the hardest person to forgive is your self. I think that’s what this song is about, and maybe, in another 20 years, I’ll know for sure.      

Special ‘Thanks’ to my buddy Woody Moran for suggesting I record this one 2 years after I’d written it, forgotten it and left it for dead on the side of the highway somewhere out in the desert. He saw something in it I couldn't see yet...

From a very early age, I began to perfect the art of singing the first verse and then forgetting the rest of the song. 

I've always been bad at remembering lyrics

Mr. Bum Wagler comes from the heart and soul of all the little buckaroos that wanted to grow up and be Roy Rogers. Took 50 years from that first dream to steppin’ out on the stage in cowboy boots and Skully shirt, but it was worth the wait. All those years of livin’ go into each and every one of Ol’ Bum’s tunes, infusin’ them with laughter and tears, tellin’ stories that are unique, yet in a way, belong to everyone.

Mr. Bum Wagler believes that life should be full of passion, and mostly happy, and that if you can’t laugh at yourself, then there ain’t much funny in the world. And if you can laugh, and cry and hoot and holler, well then ain’t that what bein’ alive’s all about?
