What gets played on the chill stage at night? 

Playing at 9pm can be tricky as its the time of day where most people are up and ready to go - energy is higher and chilling is at a daily low - So with this in mind I decided to showcase a different style; still keeping to the interesting worldly rhythms and instrumentation, but with full on bass in your face.

This was heaps of fun to play! If you dig it please let me know and I might do some more of this style :)

For the last 4 consecutive years Christian Di Marco and I close the Chill Island at Esoteric Festival, as always with a backdrop of a breath taking sunset. Fellow travellers make this pilgrimage to experience the lowering of the sun.  And with it we provide the soundtrack, a psychedelic worldly approach combining mid tempo bass and down tempo tracks with an emphasis on Middle Eastern Sounds and prayer.

And so we improvised the entire set with a blend of djing, off-the-cuff selection, vocals, and instruments by Christian. 

I can't begin to describe my elation at how deep, and psychedelic this set is. In a way it kind of is a love letter to our musical influences and early festival experiences. 

Travel with us to the east for some earthly bass tones and syncopated grooves.

Oh what a beautiful morning! This was the opening set of the festival for the Boombox Stage at this years Earth Frequency in Queensland, Australia!

I shared a video clip of this set to my Instagram and it went viral- garnering over 1.6 million views and a whole lot of hate comments. This response has fortified my intention and sense of purpose behind my DJing- which is to create inclusive, safe and sacred sonic spaces for community to come together to dance, move, heal, love, play, express, expand, connect, and celebrate life, free from judgement or derision.

This tune was supposed to be a part of Into The Sun, but I couldn't get it finished in time… It was like tapping into that Loco Ono nerve, and then I wanted the widest, stupidest, lowest, slow-motion drop… then I started jacking with alternate surprise cuts from artists like Dead Prez, Big Makk, Yookie, GTA, (huge shout outs to these artists for the inspiration!) and then it even ended up flowing perfectly into F.U.N. somehow… force is versatile. Extreme props to Seth Drake for suggesting this trick with the sideband I can't even pretend to understand, but it made the weight of that fucking downbeat absolutely ludicrous :) Special thanks to Bay Area Blackalicious superstar Gift Of Gab for cutting vocals while on the road!

This might be my favorite track on the album… the original concept was like an ode to late-1990s electronica, and I was doing a good job keeping it simple and steady and pretty at first. But as layers kept getting added it morphed into a thicker, more futuristic journey: like the second cousin of Flashback …which is fitting. Someday I may release the first version, which was uptempo with double-time breakbeat drums, and a hypnotic pattern which was like a weird mix of Knight Rider & Mesmerizing The Ultra. I love when the shortest version of a song is 6:20… you know the cook was getting out of hand in the kitchen.
