Almost one year ago to the date, Buraka Som Sistema were called to perform on the first Boiler Room in their hometown of Lisbon. On the first 15 minutes of this now-legendary set (which you can still watch on Youtube) a new sound was introduced to the world. An intense, hypnotic and tropical-flavored 90 BPM beat got the crowd moving and Buraka’s sharply-dressed master of ceremonies Kalaf picked up the microphone - “We call it Zouk Bass”, he shouted. The crowd went wild and a new genre was officially born. 

Fast-forward one year into the present and Zouk Bass is now a worldwide phenomenon. From its origins as Antillean fast-paced party music - the word Zouk actually means party in the local creole - to being slowed-down and sensualized in Angola under the name Kizomba, to finally brought into the Global Club Music melting pot by Buraka Som Sistema, this sound has come a long way. 

Showcasing zouk maestros from all around the world, from USA’s JSTJR to Russia’s Insane Fennel, including Portugal’s DZC Deejays, the UK’s KJs, France’s Mala Noche and Buraka Som Sistema themselves - among many others - ‘We Call It Zouk Bass Volume I’ presents a truly global scene, united under the mission of making dance floors move a bit slower and a lot sexier.

First time Ari Up of the Slits and Lee Scratch Perry appear on record together!   These tracks bring together two eccentric legends doing what they do best on some of Scratch's classic 70s dub vibes that Subatomic Sound System pushes into the future rootical dubstep realm.  Hearing these two together, Lee Perry, originator of dub from a time before there was dubstep, and Ari Up of the Slits, leader of the first all female punk band and originator of punky reggae, from before there was a Santogold or MIA, makes you realize how it all started.

The “Hello, Hell Is Very Low” vinyl 45 features a dub and vocal take of a rootical dubstep reflip of the rare and classic “Underground Roots” riddim, known to have been used by Studio One’s Sir Coxsone Dodd’s sound system to lay waste in Jamaican sound clashes (typically played back to back with the only known vocal version, a closely guarded special rumored to have been done for Coxsone by Junior Byles). On this 45, Subatomic Sound System dubs the riddim up proper with maximum respect to the tradition of the masters, Lee Perry &amp; King Tubby, while also turning out the low end, delivering drums and bass big and bad enough knock out even a modern day dubstep club crowd. It also must be mentioned that, this is the first time EVER that Lee “Scratch” Perry and Ari Up of the Slits appear on the same recording, even though they both worked extensively on On-Sound projects with Adrian Sherwood during the 80s. The combination proves strong as they both succeed in striking a clever lyrical balance, delivering vocals that juxtapose conscious culture and spirituality with humor and wordplay.

On the A-Side, “Hello, Hello, Hell is Very Low” features tough lyrics from Lee “Scratch” Perry alongside Ari Up of the Slits and original melodica from Subatomic Sound’s Emch that summons the ghost of Augustus Pablo for some classic melodies. The dubbed out track is centered around Perry riffing on the line “Hello, Hell is very low and Heaven is very, very high!” linguistically playing off the greetings “Hello” vs. “Hi” and with the metaphysical concept of “Hell” being “lo(w)” and “Heaven” being “(hi)igh” in what is on one hand slapstick humor and on the other hand profound moral philosophizing. Ari Up meanwhile shows her respect for dub history and the people of her second home, Jamaica, with lyrics “Underground roots, what we bring to you, rub-a-dub roots, message to the youth…time to know the truth!” exorting the “underground youth” to rise up “overground” while at the same time sending a message to the dubstep generation about the origins of dub and respecting its founders.

On the B-Side, Ari-Up of the Slits delivers “Bed Athletes” a singjay vocal tune in a classic dancehall style. Lyrically she twists the original children’s song melody into a positive minded and humorous sex education course for the “underground youth”, with a verse for the men and another for the women, emphasizing the importance of physical fitness and mental training for mutual enjoyment of each others company in bed, even suggesting that men “learn Ninjitsu” so the art of “Japanese fighting” can be “used ‘pon daggering”.

Deadly, utterly unique dubware from the brand new collaborative project of Alter Echo and E3.  Combining orthodox dub techniques and esoteric studio science with an Eastern sensibility vinyl archaeology AE & E3 create tracks of extraordinary sonic detail and power, evoking Jamaica, North Africa, and deep space all at once.

Kufic Dub combines a storming, martial riddim and Middle Eastern strings with disorienting samples and echo chamber mayhem to create something entirely new and devastating for the dance and the headphones.

Anchored by a powerhouse steppers riddim, Dub Is Not Easy reels in the desert vibes and casts out a ghostly net that snares desert flute, rasta voice, binghi drums, haunted keys, tape rewinds and spectral effects that fuse to create something utterly transporting.

Alter Echo (AKA Sound Secretion, Josh Derry), has spent the last decade and a half working as a dub scientist of the highest order. Through his collaborations with DJ Spooky, Lee Perry, Mad Professor, Scientist, Twilight Circus, Dr. Israel, Systemwide and countless others, he has often worked as the Hidden Hand, perfecting and alloying disparate materials into wholly new dub forms. Alongside E3, he was one of the founders of world-renowned future-dub label BSI Records, and has released on labels including BSI, M Records, Six Degrees, Thirsty Ear, Sub Rosa, and Bangarang.  AE has performed in the US, Mexico, Canada, France and Senegal. 

E3 (AKA Ezra E. Ereckson) is a founding member of agit-dub band Systemwide and analog improv soundsystem Bucolic, ran BSI Records, and now runs ZamZam with Tracy Harrison.  Collecting vinyl and practicing sample archaeology for 25 years, and DJing regularly for over a decade, E3 has shared the stage with many dub luminaries including Adrian Sherwood, Dub Syndicate, Scientist and Lee Perry.
