This was a fun one!  Live recording of a 5 piece with 3 guitars, 2 singers, 1 bass, and a drummer.

Each guitar player got a 57, the lead vox was SM7, backup vox were AKG D5, and the drums were just two mics, some MXL large diaphragm condensor and an Audix D6 inside the kick.

Drums:

Kick was augmented with a previously recorded kick recorded through an Audix D6, high-passed, and then blended for taste to augment the attack.  EQ boost on kick around 60hz to bring out thump

Lots of volume and EQ envelopes to bring out the toms

Snare was left UNCOMPRESSED for the first time ever in one of my mixes (HOLY CRAP?!?!)  I found that I didn't like the way the compressor was changing the attack.  
Just an EQ boost at 200hz to bring out some more body, surgery cut at 9k to remove some hi-hats, and small boost at 8k for attack.  Room sample
from Steven Slate Drums Snare Sample 11 was mixed in slightly.

Bus compression with Waves Vcomp with the analog mix set to 100%.  Some Waves H-EQ with a low shelf around 80hz,
and a small boost around 8k to bring out some of the drum attack.

Drums were bused (minus snare) and sent to reverb bus.  Just a SLIGHT amount of this was mixed in,
trying to give the drums that "studio B" sound.

Overheads had some slight compression (fast attack/release) and some surgery EQ: high pass at 150hz,
narrow/deep cut at 500hz to reduce claustrophobia, scoop at 3500 to reduce 
whooshy cymbals (and also allow me to turn the OH's up for the toms)

Bass:

Amp and DI signal was blended to taste.  Waves Bassrider was used to even slightly.
Smashed with waves rcomp.  Boost at 90hz to bring out rumble, scoop at 200hz to kill some mud.  Reaper's ReaComp
was used to sidechain compress the bass with the kick-drum

Guitar:

Just some gentle EQ surgery on some frequencies - 8k (drums attack), 4k (kick attack), 
and 200hz (was boosted on snare to bring out body) and then panned about 25% to the Left

Vocals:

Very nice, present voice so I used Waves C1 (my favorite software comp for maintaining presense when smashing vox)
EQ boost at 12k to bring out air, boost at around 350 to bring out body.  Slight Waves RVerb mixed in with some
smaller room reverb

Summary:

My goals were to maintain the live feel and the dynamics of the amazing performances while augmenting what I could
to maximize clarity and feel.  This was what ultimately led me to mix a sample in with the kick drum since I just
wasn't happy with the attack sound I was getting just from EQ.

Another thing I noticed was that the snare was slightly louder in the left Channel on the OH's.  I split the oH
into a Left and Right track and manually adjusted each one til it was peaking equally on each side.

Master Mix Bus:

The whole mix was sidechain compressed by the kick-drum ever so slightly.  Then some gentle Bus compression (about 3-5db with Waves VComp) and a little bit of EQ (Waves Lin-EQ) followed
by just a touch of Waves L3-LL (not to smash or brickwall the mix, just make it a tad louder)

This was mixed in Reaper using the following plugins:

Waves L3-LL

The kick sample was recorded myself.

Mixed on Yamaha HSM-80 monitors.
