Delivering an anual mix for the kind people of @the-dream-chimney has became a lovely tradition since 2022. These sets are passionate tales of sun-drenched sweetness, delicate disco vibes and include some of my favourite grooves from the recent years.

Dream Chimney Mixes

Hi folks. For fun and due to my love for both tracks - Lorde's new sweet summer single "Solar Power" and Primal Scream's iconic "Loaded" from 1991 - I created my first ever mash-up with these two songs that are siblings in spirit as Lorde already confirmed in a previous interview.

The similarities of both songs are obvious and as I was browsing through the internet I really wondered why nobody tried out a proper mash-up of both (or did I just miss that?). Well, maybe because it's not that easy as I realized. This version is far from being perfect ... and it's kind of tricky to create a perfect blend without the original stems. But I did this for fun on two consecutive nights, to ease my mind and celebrate the current quite special summer vibe. I hope it's also fun for you folks. Cause it is for me and always will. Thanks. Solar Loaded (A Lorde & Primal Scream Mash-Up)

Time feels relative these days - so let's stretch it a bit as we take the new year as a moment of reflection of what happened and where we head next. This is a musical call for meditation and contemplation and therefore a mixtape that's totally different from the ones I usually provide here. And I invite everybody to follow it.

Those 100 minutes provide a glimpse into some of my most loved ambient sounds of recent time, including personal favourites from Andy Stott, Burial, Hælos, Rival Consoles, Diskret, Julianna Barwick and more. It starts quite gentle, then takes a dark twist only to end on a more optimistic and uplifting note ... which will hopefully happen in a similar way once we leave this second pandemic winter. Point Zero is an invitation to slow things down and I hope you enjoy this slightly different ride with me in a similar way like my usual mixes. May your personal reflections lead you to a good 2022. I'll leave you with a quote from the wonderful Damien Jurado who also shows up towards the end of this selection.

Point Zero: An Ambient Music Reflection

Hi people. Time for a new remix adventure from yours truly.

During the past week in quarantine I produced a new edit for one of my all time favourite 70s tunes, Nicolette Larson’s “Lotta Love” from 1978. Originally it’s a Neil Young tune and well, that rework pretty much only kept Larson’s stunning vocal work as I had the acapella lying around here and thought I could play with it for a bit. Since I recently listened to lots of cloudy early 90s pop and house music that somehow influenced the result as well. More of a slow burner, you might say. Original is also pretty sweet, you should check it out if you can.

Nicolette Larson - Lotta Love (Burnout Sumner Housey Remix)

I’m a sucker for good pop music … and Crash” by Charli XCX is an album that delivers exactly that. It’s how good mainstream pop should sound like in 2022 and it’s ironically that she still is treated more like the ‘alternative’ part of the scene. Charli’s new album is a solid one and “Lightning” is one of my favourite pieces on it. 

However, the original runs a bit short and every good 80s tune back then came with a proper Extended Mix that takes the best parts of a song and gives them more time in the spotlight. Well, and since there’s no official one I decided to produce one … how bold of me, right? So, this new remix of mine extends the original up to eight and half minutes. More hooks, more cowbells, more sharp snare drums and more Charli of course. Maybe it’s a bit too long … but well, that’s what these 12 ‘’ mixes were all about anyway, right? It’s a little fun thing for the summer and hopefully the song will now stick in your head as well over the next few months. It’s up for free stream and download right here. Cheers!

Charli XCX - Lightning (Burnout Sumner's Striking 80s Extended Edit)

Back in early 2019 I compiled some of my favourite from that strange hard-to-define electronic music niche called called “Balearic house” into a special mix called https://soundcloud.com/burnout-sumner/cosmic-coastline-mix

It’s those special kinds of dance tunes with retro-appeal, warm sounds, bright chimes, a certain psychedelic appeal and lots of jungle noise samples in there. Well, basically what 808 State started with “Pacific State” back in 1989. 

I’m a sucker for that sound and over the past years my collection grew bigger, so during a Covid quarantine earlier this spring I suddenly realized that I should produce a sequel and three years later it arrives. Being titled “Cosmic Coastline II: A Tropical Trip To Balearic Bliss” this mix follows the usual style of blockbuster sequels: it’s bigger and more complex, lasting almost three hours. I envisioned it like a journey that starts slow but picks up groove along the way before slowing down again. It invites the listener to dive deeper into the sound and psychedelic nature of it … and it takes its time which is necessary to unfold its full potential. It really is a trip and you are invited to deep dive into it (no substances required).

In it you’ll find some of my favourite pieces of electronic music from the past three years, including songs from Mazo, Kasper Bjørke, Lone, Earth Trax, Bufiman, Reuben Van Smith, COEO and - most importantly - from myself. Something I couldn’t offer on the first one. Lots of goodies and hidden treasures and - without sounding selfish - I think it’s a really great set for the summer season and all outdoor activities you have in mind for the next few weeks. Cosmic Coastline II: A Tropical Trip To Balearic Bliss

I'm a sucker for a good trilogy so it was only a matter of time before I would come up with a follow up to "Hacienda High Times" from 2019 and "Hacienda Now Times" from 2021 - so, here we are. This is "Hacienda Chill Times", a fitting final chapter for my mixtapes dedicated to the unique spirit of the early rave days and that iconic club in Manchester. And while the first ones focussed on the floorfilling dance anthems, this one heads into more relaxed 'after hours' territory.

Over the past months I got a bit more obsessed with the cloudy synthpop of the early 90s which played a crucial part in my childhood. Lots of these tracks still had that grooving acid house DNA but in a ways softer and more subtle way so that's the vibe I was going for. The groove is obviously still there, just not in the limelight. And while the first two mixtapes separated the old from the new tracks I decided to mix them all together this time. So you get artists from the 90s heydays like The Shamen, New Order, The Beloved, Way Out West and Primal Scream right next to modern day stuff from Lone, Earth Boys, Peggy Gou, Swim Deep and Bicep. Different times, same vibe. It's the perfect final puzzle piece here, a trippy little summer breeze you can enjoy before and after the big party.

Mix of the Week #499: Burnout Sumner - Tropical Detox Mix

Friends! We need a boost of energy in our life as we enter this new year. I surely do. And this is the soundtrack for that feeling. Compiled in some of my lowest minutes I turned towards the feeling of club euphoria for this mix that was specifically produced for my NYE party this year.

Imaginary Rave Tape Vol. 19

Hello fellow raving community. In the wake of the Covid pandemic I started this thing called “Live From The Utopian Void” which is basically a live DJ set that also works as a showcase of the sound I’d like to play at the moment. I dropped one mix in early 2022, one in 2023 and well… needless to say I’m a sucker for good trilogies, so here’s a third one, just in time for the start of spring.

I usually have a starting track and see where it takes me from there on. In this case it’s the funky Foals rework of a Paramore track which is followed by a short trip to the 80s, some darker tunes by Chinaski and Kalipo before heading into sweet house music territory with much loved producers like Octo Octa, Running Hot and Confidence Man. Well, and towards the end I can’t shake off some fast trance moments by I.JORDAN and Swart before things will calm down again a bit more once we hit that 2h mark.

Having said that … of course I would love to play more. I don’t have a booking agency (yet) and please don’t judge me by my transitions or the genre-hopping. It’s part of who I am, I guess. I love to challenge myself and the audience. Whether it’s acid house, Balearic disco or funky soul - Burnout Sumner is right there for your dancefloor desires. Just drop me a message. Enjoy the mix. Live From The Utopian Void III (Spring Mix 2024)

One more time, friends… allow me to introduce you to my 20th and final IMAGINARY RAVE TAPE which is now waiting for you on my Soundcloud. Why “final”? Well, it arrives exactly four years after the first one and I really like the conclusive feeling of round numbers. I think it has run its natural course and it feels like the initial idea - an idealized and concise imagination of the perfect rave born out of Covid lockdown frustration - reached a sweet conclusion. 

These mixes have been a personal tribute to the unifying power of the dancefloor - out of my bedroom into the world. I think I’ve said everything I wanted to say with these ones. I long for a more real and analogue connection with these dancefloors now so I think it’s nice to say farewell to the series for now. I’m really happy with this final chapter - 100 minutes of sweet Balearic beats and trippy, tropical floorfillers from the past and present. Follow the Bio link to get to it…

Imaginary Rave Tape Vol. 20

Yes, it’s hard to believe folks… but I really just turned 40 the other day. Off to another decade of successfully avoiding adulthood, right? Part of that celebration was a party with my closest friends and this epic 4h-set including some of my favourite house music tunes of all time. Turns out this specific genre of electronic dance music is a steady companion of my life and it felt like a fitting sound for the night. 💜

Four decades of house music to celebrate my four decades on this planet - including tunes by DJ Koze, Étienne De Crécy, Daft Punk, Mploko, Inner City, Todd Terje, Kylie Minogue, Tensnake Roger Sanchez as well as housy reworks of favourite artists like Bloc Party, Röyksopp, Romy, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Jungle, Depeche Mode, Fleetwood Mac and lots, lots of others. Sigma Mixtapes pres. Burnout Sumner

Recently I was kindly invited back to Leipzig’s finest club hidden treasure to warm-up the basement for my kind friends of @stolenmoneyposse as part of a very special evening, marking the launch of the 4th edition of "Maybe A Magazine" (https://www.instagram.com/maybeamagazine).

That set turned out to be longer than expected - ending up being 3 ½ hours long. It starts in in quite chilled and obscure krauty/ new rave territory, before it slowly moves towards disco/ 80s and finally some true house music pleasures. It ends with a Roger Sanchez classic and a bit of the @drunkenstein-one set that followed after me. 

Loving the build-up character of this one and the whole vibe (which is more important than track transitions for me as you will notice). Enjoy that sweet and smooth ride, fellow funky friends.

Ever since Covid ended I started the tradition of welcoming the new year by a fresh DJ set called “Live From The Utopian Void” - two hours of electrifying tunes that showcase the club sounds that excite me right now. It’s meant to spread uplifting vibes in times that feel quite dark - metaphorically and literally. It’s about the uplifting enthusiasm of a good rave, the joint togetherness of the dance and the positive energy it can create. The sound of late 80s and early 90s house and rave culture has always fascinated me from a very early age on. Maybe it's because the aftermath of it (you know, when it fully hit the mainstream and became trashy) was the sound of my childhood. Only later through my fascination for Manchester's Factory Records and bands like New Order I got more excited about the roots of this movement that creatively peaked between 1988 and 1993. Over the past months I dug even deeper into that era, discovered obscurities and rarities I wasn't even aware of. This mix in many ways is a culmination of my ongoing fascination, combining longtime favourites with more unknown tracks while also bridging the gap between underground and mainstream.

This was a fascinating era for electronic music, the moment when traditional indie rock vibes merged with electronic dance music in a still quite raw and analogue way. There's an almost naive notion of adventurous experimentation sensible throughout it and that really excites and inspires me to this day. So, if you always wanted to know what this brief period of ecstasy-tripping electronic sounds was all about please enjoy the following journey. Hacienda High Times: An Oldschool Rave & House Mix

Every now and then kind people ask me to come around and play some tunes. Over the past weeks in isolation I really fell in love with this song by Australian artist https://soundcloud.com/gordi-music. "Aeroplane Bathroom" is a fitting and wonderful song for these weird times and it really spoke to me. The original (please see right here: https://youtu.be/sBUDAmDf-DY) is pretty much perfect so my rework wasn't really necessary. Consider it to be a little tribute to it, adding a dreamy groove to its gentle notion.

Know your roots, appreciate and accept them. I was heavily socialized with European dance music of the 1990s with the whole genre of trance music playing an essential part in my life back then. There's something quite addictive about this mixture of heavy bass-driven beats and trippy synthesizer patterns. Obviously, it's quite a cheesy sound but I recently found myself revisiting some of the music from back then, especially since I fell in love with psy-trance last summer and I should actually be dancing on a festival to this sound these days but since it's the summer of Corona I have to skip that for now. So, instead I produced a mighty throwback mix with some of my personal pop/dance/trance anthems from that specific period of time between 1998 and 2003.

That's the music I listened to in my youth, featuring personal hits and little treasures I recently rediscovered while digging through my personal archives. You can find tracks by producers like Chicane, Blank & Jones, ATB, Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, RMB, Above & Beyond and a few more in here... all the big players from that big sounding field of electronic dance music. If you free yourself from certain expectations and, you know, whatever is considered cool these days it's actually fun to enjoy this sort of sound and - well - actually, feel the trance. Trance With Benefits: A Throwback Dance Mix 1998 - 2003

2020 is a year without public dancing and just on the brink of a new lockdown season The xx singer Romy dropped her first solo song, one that celebrates dancefloor and club euphoria. It's bittersweet bliss and I really love the vibe of this tune so I decided to make it a bit longer. 

It's just a little tribute by yours truly. Or better said: an imaginary extended mix for an imaginary vinyl that might be played at an imaginary rave ... it fits into the current mood, doesn't it? Enjoy it and stay safe in this weird winter.

This is the third of my four-parted mixtape series, focussing on the third decade of Pet Shop Boys remixes, featuring reworks by Eric Prydz, Richard X, Scissor Sisters, Tocadisco, Grum, Ewan Pearson and of course Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe on remix duties at well. On the brink of the new century you really witness how things are shifting and dance music heads for different directions, allowing pop-focussed house music and darker techno tones to exist right next to each other. It also saw the producers that got influenced by PSB finally getting the chance to rework their idols here.

This is the second of my four-parted mixtape series, focussing on the second decade of Pet Shop Boys remixes, featuring reworks by Danny Tenaglia, Tin Tin Out, Felix Da Housecat, Rollo Armstrong, Jam & Spoon and of course Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe on remix duties at well. I produced this mixtape many years ago so it lacks a bit of mixing skills (especially the volume control gets a bit out of hand in-between) but if you grew up to 90s dance, trance and high energy eurodisco vibe this set will definitely please you.

Pet Shop Boys. Mixed 1984 - 1992

Hello everybody,

as some of you might remember at the beginning of the first Covid-lockdown of 2020 I produced a meditative mixtape to cope with all the emotions of that time (https://soundcloud.com/burnout-sumner/lockdown-comfort-zone). Back then I really wished it wouldn't come to a sequel but... well, here we are ... and obviously I felt the need to produce another one in order to comfort you and me as we're reaching the final stages of this rollercoaster ride of a year. This second lockdown feels a bit different, a bit bleaker and harder. We're all burned out by this year, the ongoing stress, the lack of normality and carelessness that you sometimes need in order to not go crazy. A light at the end of the tunnel is visible but we have to hold on for a little more and following the exhausting months behind us and the dark winter in front of us, this isn't always easy. We need to remind ourselves of the possibilities such a time like can offer.

Once again, this second Lockdown Comfort Zone mix marks a musical journey from darkness to light. Following the introspective start it gets quite euphoric and life-affirming in the end because that's the spirit we need to aim for in 2021. The songs in this mix helped me over the past months and are in most parts a personal soundtrack of this year to me, featuring music from such wonderful artists like Martin Kohlstedt, Rosa Anschütz, TOM And His Computer, Skullcrusher, Discovery Zone, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and even good ol' Pink Floyd with which I fell in love during the first lockdown. If you need an ID for one of those tracks don't hesitate to ask. I really hope you'll enjoy this second part as much as the first one and let's all hope I don't need to make a trilogy out of this, right? Lockdown Comfort Zone #2: From Despair To Hope

Throughout this shitty year 2020 the music and videos of Icelandic/Norwegian two-piece https://soundcloud.com/ultraflexband managed to fill my heart with joy multiple times. The musical joint venture by Farao and Special-K is a mood-lifting pop pleasure and I honestly think you all should check out their fabulous album "Visions Of Ultraflex" if you love shimmering synthpop as much as I do.

I feel quite blessed that the girls allowed me to rework their single "Never Forget My Baby" which is one of my favourites from this record. The dreamy synth sounds really spoke to me right from the beginning so I wanted to bring out that floating, dreamy flair a bit more with my rework. Hope I succeeded here. Enjoy it and make sure to never forget your baby in these weird times.

As some of you might know by now there's a great amount of love I share for the late 80s/ early 90s acid house and rave culture, its sound and vibe. Two years ago I produced a mix called "Hacienda High Times" as a tribute to that cultural movement. "Hacienda" was the name of the iconic Manchester club that became the international temple for that movement that first brought dance and rock music together and later turned into its own little world. Of course - like all good stories - it wasn't meant to last and the club shut down in the 90s.

But since these are troubled times that challenge your imagination a thought crossed my mind "What would a night at the Hacienda sound like in the year 2021?" Obviously, that imagination would exclude a global pandemic. So, I started collecting tracks from today that share a similar vibe, that slightly trippy, funky psychedelic dance spirit. And this selection also happen to featured some of the indie scene's finest new bands of the past years, something that also connects the rave scene's past glory with today. I see it as a statement of love, unity and togetherness, a reminder for the universal force of the joint dance, something we currently need to remind ourselves of on a regular basis. "Hacienda Now Times" might take a look at the past (both mixes start with the same track but in different versions) but it's a sound for the here and now, designed for a good party we can all have together in the hopefully not so distant future.
