BURR OAK mark a monolithic moment in their sonic journey with the release of their debut album, SOMEWHERE WE BELONG, which stands as the crown jewel of the two member’s careers as solo artists and as a duo alike. Packed with a mammoth 18 tracks that span the full breadth of the Neurofunk genre, SOMEWHERE WE BELONG sees BURR OAK deliver a definitive work set to cement itself well within the history of the genre.

BURR OAK’s own story is mirrored in the stories of their twin cowboy personas, Scruggs and Sonny Jim, whose escapades are expressed throughout the album’s tracklist and the tales that accompany it. Much like these two inseparable wanderers, BURR OAK’s two members, Niko and Julien, began their careers as solo artists before joining together to embark on their shared quest as BURR OAK. Longtime fans of Neurofunk will recognize each by their many other monikers. Niko has produced and performed variously as a member of the French Drum & Bass trio Signs, as half of the duo Cecil Hotel, and under his solo alias Opsen throughout his long career devoted to the pursuit of Drum & Bass’ most technical edge. By contrast, Julien’s journey under his solo alias The Clamps has seen him champion both cinematic soundscapes and the genre’s most extreme fringes, merging beauty and brutality within his music in equal measure.
If this wasn’t a colorful palette of a career enough, they are also running another project with the also Toulouse based SKS – “Forum” which is also a heavyweight drum and bass project with a jungle/rave/oldschool twist. And to add a cherry on the top Julien runs Third Colony with Yan, an extravagant IDM/downtempo project.

As BURR OAK, these two prolific artists intertwine their sounds in an inexorable musical lattice, presenting a unified sonic profile that is more than the sum of its parts. This stylistic synergy thrives amidst SOMEWHERE WE BELONG, which details the story of BURR OAK both in fiction and as the producers they are today. The album’s title speaks to this, not only for the duo’s cowboy characters but for Niko & Julien as well. Beneath the branches of the BURR OAK, these titans of Neurofunk have truly found somewhere they belong.

After months spent amidst the depths of the wilds since their passage beneath a great relic of The Dark Age, Scruggs and Sonny Jim stood once more before an object of inscrutable origin, a monolith engraved with the runic language of a long-lost culture. Puzzled, and with a bare amount of literacy available between them, their wizened trigger fingers traced the engraved markings upon the stone as the pair engaged in a once-in-a-lifetime attempt at scholarship.

“Scruggs?”
“Yeah Sonny Jim”
“I ain't got one lick of an idea ‘bout what we’re looking at”

“Yup” was Scruggs’ sole reply as his finger drew towards the end of a particular sentence inscribed upon the monolith’s surface, though he knew it not as such. Then, with a sound the pair would later describe to their fellows around the campfire as “a flash flood and a twig snapping at the same time”, the pair vanished from the space before the monolith.

When they reappeared, the vision before their eyes was unlike any they had ever encountered before. The pair were astounded to find that they seemed to stand upon the very clouds amidst an endless void of darkness inlaid with millions of tiny points of light. Before this minuscule moment of comprehension had ended, the pair were once more bemused by the fact that they seemed to have fallen back to Earth in an instant, landing in an altogether different world than they had ever known. Lying amidst a labyrinth of pyramids graded by steep stone steps, the pair’s vision was overtaken by a brilliant flash of light that preceded the emergence of a plantoid being wrapped in vine, stem, and leaf woven together in mimicry of the human form. Though possessing only the semblance of a mouth, the voice of the SUPREME ENTITY echoed like thunder off of the hard surfaces of the pyramids that surrounded them, imparting a terrifying warning through their ears and directly into the core of their minds.

“Lower beings, the BURR OAK will take over this world. There are no limits. You will be mine, forever."

BURR OAK return to EATBRAIN with their latest single, SUPREME ENTITY, which comes as the first sample of the duo’s forthcoming debut album. The result of their long journey through the wildest of sonic realms, SUPREME ENTITY, and the album for which it stands as the harbinger are set to transform the sonic world of the EATBRAIN horde in the coming months as BURR OAK reveal the path to their sonic home.

I (Julien) will always remember the first time I heard "Stigma". It was at Electromind in 2008 and it was like taking a train at full speed in my face.
So having the opportunity to remix this classic tune 14 years later is like "une madeleine de Proust” for me. We didn't want to go on just an update of the track as it's already perfect, but more like rewriting everything to give heady and esoteric sensations.

(Nicolas) " Stigma " still has been one of my favorite songs . 
The first time I heard this track I couldn't believe it, I thought perfection had been reached. 
So having the opportunity to remix this monster is almost unreal for me. 
We really wanted to reappropriate the song and we hope you will like our vision. 

Quite a journey in a shamanic world, thanks to Noisia for letting us do it!

Within the depths of the mountains that bounded the known west lay an ancient monument, recently revealed by the retreat of a glacier that had once enveloped it. Upon its weathered surface were inscribed the runes of a forgotten language that imbued the surrounding area with weak but latent magic, calling silently to any living being that wandered into the valley within which it lay. Thus it was that twain wolves slept at the base of the monolithic structure, and thus it was that a pair of cowboys who had wandered far from home had come to stand before it as well.

Though none of the beings so inexorably gathered could read the inscription’s faded tongue, its message still rang resonantly within their souls, binding them to each other with the last of the stone’s stored energy. Within this pair of pairs, the broken bond between humanity and the beasts of the wild was restored, fostering a connection through which the will of the waystone’s creators was spoken for a final time. Filled with its sacred presence, the two cowboys tipped their hats to the wolves in honor before turning to each other in brief acknowledgment of their newfound purpose.

“Scruggs?”
“Yeah, Sonny Jim?”
“‘Seems we got quite the ride layin’ ahead. How’s about we get back in the saddle and get to it?”

With both parties having already made their mark within the roster of Trendkill, the imprint created by drum & bass figurehead Prolix, their names will be familiar with many veteran fans of the genre. But their joint prowess, alongside the massive body of tracks they’ve already got prepared for release, proves that their output is set to be a turning point for Trendkill. And this is from a label which has had a groundbreaking discography since its inception.

Burr Oak is the new name which The Clamps and Opsen have collided under and their forthcoming, double-sided single will identify their sound and demonstrate the relentlessness of their production. Both ‘Time Has Come’ and its flipside ‘Originate’ are intimidating slabs of sonic, the type of which would be enviable to even the most longstanding producers and it proves that head honcho Prolix has his ear to the ground when its comes to artists with such high-reaching levels of sound design.

‘Time Has Come’ is the A-side and almost instantly explodes through its first breakdown, the type of which catapults you down a winding road of slamming drum patterns and finely tuned hooks. The danceability of this track is undeniable and it rockets into play, only once pulling for the brakes as it drops you into the pair’s expansive sonic landscape before once again, you’re hurled back into the chaos. The reverse is delivered through ‘Originate’, just as cataclysmic as it winds you through its first manic acceleration. Its note flurries and fluctuating bass takes you out into the deep before crazed drums cut at you from all sides. Burr Oak don’t offer up a less aggressive B-side to their release and it gives you an idea of how they’ll be continuing with their release schedule. 

This is a debut which no fan of the darker midst of drum & bass is set to miss. Prolix has proven that as well as being a production heavyweight, he’s also a revered selector, with Trendkill’s catalogue evidence of this fact.

The name Burr Oak should already be very familiar to Trendkill Records’ most ardent followers. The emergent drum and bass supergroup, formed of Toulouse producers Opsen and The Clamps, burst onto the scene last year, striking listeners with their intense, no-holds-barred approach to neurofunk. Drawing on their ever-innovative sound design skills and prolific work rate, the two Frenchmen crafted a whopping four releases for the Prolix-helmed label last year and have since guested on Eatbrain and Cause4Concern in 2020. Now celebrating a homecoming of sorts, October finds the pair returning to Trendkill for the Polar Lows EP, which features a seismic alliance with Austrian duo TR Tactics. 

Showcasing their production prowess, the individual contributions from each member of Burr Oak shine through over the course of the three-track project. As a former member of the innovative trio Signs, well-known for their halftime contributions to labels like Noisia’s Division, Opsen audibly leaves his mark on opener and title track “Polar Lows”, which utilises flourishes of snarling, hip-hop inspired breakbeats before searing synths launch it into a riotous climax. Meanwhile, some of the blistering basslines on show throughout the EP are well-aligned with The Clamps’ signature sound, the sum of the two’s contributions making for phenomenal results. 

Add Trendkill labelmates TR Tactics into the mix on “Washoku” and expect a four-way collaboration of epic proportions, deploying both heavyweight synth work and fleeting, atmospheric pauses. Rounding off the EP is the brooding, progressive “Intelligent Suicide”. Introduced with melancholy ambiances and subdued stabs before hurtling towards a gritty, mechanical crescendo garnished with whirring feedback and drilling basses, the song makes for one of the pair’s most intriguing creations to date, serving as a firm reminder that these two titans of the neuro scene have plenty more tricks up their sleeves.

Burr Oak is the collaborative Drum & Bass project of French producers The Clamps and Opsen (formerly of Signs), uniting their visions around a dark, cinematic strain of Neurofunk. With releases on imprints such as Trendkill, Eatbrain, Blackout and Cause4Concern, they craft high-impact music where ruthless sound design, rock energy and emotive songwriting collide.

Their debut album "Somewhere We Belong" on Eatbrain marked a turning point, an 18-track odyssey that firmly positioned Burr Oak at the forefront of modern neurofunk. The record unfolds as a narrative built around their outlaw alter egos Scruggs and Sonny Jim, blending worldbuilding, dystopian atmospheres and dancefloor pressure into a cohesive universe.

Through a series of EPs, including "Hawkeye" and "Zero Alpha", and their remixed LP "Somewhere It’s Reborn", Burr Oak has continued to expand this sonic lore, pushing their hybrid of industrial textures, emotional melodies and razor-sharp groove. Their catalogue extends further via collaborations and remixes for labels like Blackout and Evolution Chamber, notably the single "I Want You" with Magnetude and their acclaimed remix of Pythius' "Erase Me" on Blackout, which brought a particularly fresh and forward-thinking twist to the original, alongside numerous high-profile reworks for scene heavyweights.

Rooted in the intensity of 90s alternative music and driven by a "music for the struggled generations" ethos, Burr Oak treats each release as a self-contained chapter: a blend of narrative, sound design and impact that looks unapologetically toward the future of Drum & Bass.
