Continuing his explorations within house, techno, minimal and beyond, it’s safe to say San Francisco-based DJ, producer and label boss Andrew Rasse, aka Butane remains an artist at the top of his game when it comes to crafting functional, intuitive dance floor material. Kicking off the New Year with yet more classy and quality house efforts, late January sees Rasse deliver Extrasketch’s first output of 2023 as he unveils three fresh cuts in typically slick fashion with his ‘Dirt, Worldwide’ EP.

Lead track ‘Club Foot’ employs a killer organic tech house groove guided by rolling drums and shakers. Winding along effortlessly, the subtly hypnotic, infectious tune shapes up to be a low-key terrace anthem. Next, ‘Voice Inside (Filbert Street Mix)’ veers off into a slightly wonky and off-kilter warehouse trip as fuzzy analog bass patterns merge with warped vocal interjections and skippy percussion for a decidedly mind-meets-body affair. ‘Whatcha Doin’ closes the package on a smoother, dubby note. Harnessing a slightly eerie tension across the track, Rasse deftly drops some ear candy in the form of a cheeky vocal sample while harnessing those signature Butane elements. Another late-night mover in the bag.

South Africa is a magical place, full of wild landscapes and wonderful people.  This was my fourth time touring in the country, and what a privilege it has been.  Johannesburg and Cape Town offer very distinct experiences as cities, but ToyToy and Killer Robot have both curated similarly authentic underground movements over many years, and their hard work and longevity really shows.  

The energy on both dancefloors was passionate, raw, and deeply connected to the music.  Like the two cities, each party has its own unique vibe, but the common thread was a love for and knowledge of deep, hypnotic, underground dance music and an appreciation for the craft of DJing.  Both parties have a 'no photos' policy.  We need more of this please.  

Huge respect to the folks behind ToyToy and Killer Robot for their dedication to keeping underground culture alive, in the face of so many modern headwinds.  

Here are excerpts from both sets.  Cape Town from the earlier, clubbier portion of the night, and Joburg when I was winding down the garden in the wee hours of the morning after a wild four hour ride with their world-class crowd.

Two artists with an innate ability in the studio, San Francisco-based DJ, producer and label owner Andrew Rasse, aka Butane, and Italian talent Riko Forinson have remained ever-present fixtures within the worlds of house and techno over the past few years. Increasingly, a regular feature of the duos output now lies in their excellent collaborations together. Following a string of releases together via a host of top-tier international imprints, the pair now makes a welcome return to Rasse’s burgeoning Extrasketch imprint in mid-June. Growing up in the midwestern United States, Butane was steeped in the classic underground house and techno sounds that originated in Chicago and Detroit. Further influences came from afar: New York house, West Coast house, UK tech house, Cologne techno, Berlin minimal. His formative years were spent on the dancefloors of legendary venues like Twilo and Vinyl in New York City, Space and Crobar during Miami’s Winter Music Conference, and Rednofive in Chicago.

An avid record collector and DJ since 2002, Andrew’s infamous monthly party in St. Louis established an underground scene in the city and became a must-stop for touring international artists. In 2004, he embarked on his own artistic journey in the studio, despite lacking any formal musical training (a classically trained pianist he was not). Proving to be a fast learner, his unique and eclectic sound began earning him worldwide acclaim on international record labels in a mere matter of months. The German press dubbed him a wunderkind. He moved to Berlin shortly after, residing in the city from 2006–2011.

Now a resident of San Francisco, Butane is renowned for a steadfast commitment to his craft, and stands as a pillar of artistic integrity and consistency in the rapidly changing realm of electronic dance music. He values studio work over social media, and boasts an impressive and sprawling discography released by some of the most respected imprints in the business. As the founder of three labels of his own - Alphahouse, Little Helpers, and Extrasketch - Butane's impact on the industry is both deep and enduring.

Infused with energy, finesse, and sophistication, his sets resonate deeply with in-the-know audiences.
