This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show features @donato-dozzy, one of the country’s most profound electronic music producers and DJs, internationally renowned for the hypnotic and manifold ways in which he can create deep, absorbing techno trips.

Dozzy first honed his skills at the mythical squat-slash-club Brancaleone in Rome, before moving to Berlin in the mid-aughts, where he elevated his signature style even further with his “Dozzy’s Night” residency at Panorama Bar. Since then, he has gone on to grace line-ups alongside esteemed peers, such as Marcel Dettmann, Jeff Mills, Surgeon, and his compatriot Marco Shuttle.

As a producer, Dozzy first began to make waves in 2004, and has since gone on to release a string of EPs and albums on labels such as Spectrum Spools, Tresor, or The Bunker New York. In addition, he also runs three record labels. Dozzy Records, launched 2006, @spaziodisponibile, established in 2016 together with DJ and producer Giuseppe Tillieci aka @neel, and his latest label @magacircemusica, together with the Spanish graphic artist and DJ @aliciacarrera. 

For Carhartt WIP Radio, Dozzy conducted a mix that gently immerses the listener into his rich body of work playing classics like “Gol” and remixes he has done for other artists, like the legendary experimental electronic group Cabaret Du Ciel. Some call it hardgroove, most call it tribal, but in the end, it’s this type of percussive and energetic techno that runs through my veins. Heavily reliant on its loop structure, layering for extended periods and quick mixing are keys to mastery of the style. Dominated by a smattering of Todd Terry loops, deft reinterpretations of disco tracks, and a strong reliance on the track “Bubble” by Tikkel, there are similarities abound in this genre, but the artform of it all comes when stitching them together in a high-octane yet coherent way. Ebbs and flows, calculated drops, and a freight train of basslines and stabs, this is a powerhouse way to see the end of my series out the door. The balance to all of these recordings - and my music career - is this “Fulcrum.”

To celebrate 20 years of building Labyrinths, we have decided to release one set from each of the last ten years. I've chosen ten timeless moments that both document the history of the event and provide a historical snapshot of underground electronic music over the past ten years.

We have chosen a broad range--from closing techno sets, to morning ambient sets, to experimental sets to close the night. Each set represents a different side of the event. Taken together, they present a portrait of a decade of music.

Mike Parker, you would assume, is a perfectionist. His techno is meticulous, his grooves as hypnotic as any. Over the course of two decades he has honed in on his vision with ever increasing accuracy. He manages to get huge amounts of detail into his tunes that elevates them above purely functional material and lands him on labels like Semantica, Prologue and Tresor in both EP and LP format. 

The American is just as deep and powerful as a DJ, even without the use of kick drums. And that’s the path he follows over the course of one absorbing hour here, laying out a cinematic journey into space that is propelled by ambient synths and sci-fi motifs that set real scenes and have a real sense of narrative. At times it is blissful, at others more unnerving, but rarely will you hear an ambient mix as coherent and compelling as this.
