Arturo Garces, our brother from the West Coast, returns to Robsoul with his Looking For Strangers EP.
Loved by the Robsoul community for his Beats From The Streets series, the San Jose resident first appeared on the label back in 2012 with a trio of tracks that made up Vol.1. Two more collections followed and firmly established Arturo as one of the labels most exciting talents. A label boss himself, Arturo is seen as having helped define what is known as the Silicon Valley Sound. His own blend of beat-laden house infused with elements of Soul, Funk and Disco has seen him become a favorite with the likes of Sneak, Farina and Weeks.

Looking For Strangers opens with the Latin guitar licks of the title track before we’re treated to the deeper jackin’ vibes and delicious chords of Bassment Beat. The vicious kick drum of No Fool leads us on the flip, with its awesome stabs of soul. In Motion featuring the subtle and sultry vocals of Silencia closes the EP with its twisted filters and bass-heavy beats.

This is the recording from my set at Parameter 10, Public Works, San Francisco on 17 May 2025. 

The room was comically packed by the time I started (11pm) and the crowd was visibly itching to lift off, but it was so early in the night and the rest of the (stacked) lineup leant so heavily towards UK and bass-heavy music that I decided to leave the dubstep to the professionals, keep it slow and go in the opposite direction: mid 120s, wriggly, psychedelic, gurgly, engrossing, a little weird but also sometimes fun. Maybe on some level I was level preparing myself for Return To The Source in Detroit the following weekend – though ironically I ended up playing much faster and with more broken beats at RTTS than I did here. In any case, I had a blast. Been really enjoying exploring the 120-130 zone recently. Thanks to Nick for having me back, hope you all enjoy the recording.

About the mix:
This was recorded live and direct from the desk in Tokyo roughly two years ago.
For me, when it comes to house music, I always look back to the masters (as many do), but specifically to the radio mixes of Farley Jackmaster Funk, Timmy Regisford, and Boyd Jarvis.

The dynamic blending of freestyle, new wave, American disco, Italo, and the experimental dance tracks of that era was innovative and represented the true genesis of what dance music is: mixing different styles and making it all make sense together while completely blowing listeners’ minds.

When I play, I hope to pull fragments from this long-forgotten era and give the crowd something they may have been missing for a long time — with modern reverence and deep respect for the days of old.

A first taste of what awaits us on November 29th at Basic.
