A few years ago I built a kithara lyre.  This is a recording of the first test of that lyre.

Writing This Down

He said life’s a true story, I found that hard to believe
In a ghost town that looked like a strip mall, he set his spirit free
The bourgeois were late to pillage and rape, they were burning the mall girls at the stake
And a voice on the angry radio said we must vindicate
Can you leave yourself exposed, and forget everything that you think you know
If we all can let it go, we’ll get it right this time

He said those people in California think they’re going to live forever, they got the yoga
   mat BMW
They got the beautiful people who matter more and probiotic wheat grass fondue 
Some were lured to the top of the world, others said no shots were heard
Still some say that they learned fool’s gold was all they earned
And all the girls with their shopping lists, and all the boys with their greatest hits
You probably know where I’m going with this, we can get it right this time
Are you writing this down?  Are you writing this down?
Are you filling your book of sorrow with notes from the underground?

How do you find your place in such a wide world?
How do you know the truth from a lie heard?
It’s amazing to me that we suffer so
We only choose to believe what want to know

He said you can almost be human these days but you’re gonna end up no shame
When they got you out selling buckets of rain there in the middle of a hurricane
Well this ain’t love, this ain’t none of the above and it damn sure aint what they said it
    was
You gotta search a thousand faces to find one that you can trust
It’s a line you’ve got to hold in alliance against our eternal foes
And if every ghost of Gettysburg shows, we can get it right this time

Ozark Radio

You would’ve thought he was heading to Graceland
With that ticket in his hand
But he was looking for that great arch
And Chuck Berry’s promised land
It was the gateway to the West they said
So he was on his way
When he stepped onto that Greyhound
He could hear the neighbors say…

CHORUS: Turn on your Ozark radio don’t you know
                  That “Freebird” is on and it goes on and on

You would’ve thought he was on to something
Though he wasn’t sure what it was worth
With John Ford in Monument Valley
As sure as the turning of the earth
As sure as the turning of the earth it was
What he found along the way
When he shouted down into those canyons
The echo would always say…

And he just wanted to feel something that wouldn’t slip right through his hands
And he just wanted to hear something real and songs that weren’t on the play list…

The road went on for days
Caught behind Texas vanity plates
And bumper stickers that claimed, “Jesus saves”
Across the deep expanse of red states
Then the water stretched out across the dawn
Man there must have been a gallon or two in that great big pond
It was the point of no return that shoreline of dreams
Where Steinbeck wrote freely from behind the scenes
Was he finally home, or was he far from home?
What would they say if they could see him now?
You would’ve thought he had something to live for
When those waves came crashing down
