We are arriving at Explorations number 27 and our conductor for this trip will be the spellbinding FACETTES (AKA Sofiane Tib).

Sofiane has loved to dance since a young age. It’s this body language that led him to electronic music. 

A house filled with, Madonna, Depeche Mode, Pink Floyd, Eurythmics, resulted in a love of synthesizers. The dreamy emotive world that these machines created on seminal music were being soaked up by a young boy destined for big things. 
Living in France on the doorstep of a thriving rave scene, 15-year-old Sofiane was hearing the sound of the underground echoing across Europe. Listening to countless radio shows and mixes resulted in him trying to mix tunes on a cheap turntable and a cd player with no pitch control. His friends and peers on their own journey were discovering sample culture and beat making. 
Sofiane was listening, taking notes, and starting on his quest to become a DJ. 
Taking inspiration from the likes of James Murphy (LCD Sound System), Yasmine Hamdan, Satori, Dixon, Raw Main, Sainte Vie, Squire, Behrouz, Ali Farahani, Bedouin, WhomadeWho, Kollektiv Turmstrasse, Jonas Rathsman. and influenced by Arabic, Spanish and African music. Sofiane weaves these tapestries into his sets and productions creating a heart-swelling, hip-swinging soundtrack to pulsing dancefloors. 
The Facettes experience is constantly pushing boundaries, incorporating live instrumentation into his productions and live sets. A percussionist, Keyboardist, or a Cielo player is not an unusual site while Sofiane lays down his melodic groove on the turntables. 
In his own words. I am searching for goosebumps! If I don’t get them while I am creating a playlist, there is no point in playing! I listen to a lot of music, new and old releases, mixes, labels, and upcoming artists. I am looking for obscure tracks that bring spirituality and emotion to envelope the audience on the dancefloor. I am after music that not many DJs play, and being the first one to share is really important for me to keep it interesting. I am into the challenge of playing melodic music that has several layers at any time of the night. I think we don’t have enough events where we can listen to music that transports you and give you emotion! During my set. I try to have a certain progression, I create waves with tension and release to surprise the audience, I am not only using middle eastern atmospheres, but I also build my set with dark techno, hypnotic vocals, and afro elements to create a complex mix with multiple layers. 
I have been in the scene for a while, so I am after delivering the best mix that I can for each performance. One of my close friends said to me, you are sometimes competing with yourself! I have to create a journey that people can remember! I feel so much pressure each time as I have to do as well or better than the last time with a new original set. It’s hard work but if you have the right sensibility and artistic skills, you can connect and transport the audience with music that they have never heard before.

For LO-FI I wanted to record a different mix compared to what I play at a festival, it’s a set that you can listen to any time of the day! It offers lots of messages with a melancholic atmosphere that reflects what some of the Middle Eastern countries have gone through. There is lots of emotion and sadness with ethereal music from Portugal, Spain, Algeria, Greece, Turkey, Armenia, Ukraine, Israel, and more. 

Here at LO-FI, we agree, the results are exceptional. This has been one we have been looking forward to sharing with you and it is a pleasure to welcome FACETTES to the LO-FI family.

Here we are at EXPLORATIONS 31 and your train driver for this journey is the uber talented MISS B. (Sarah Bronte)
Miss Bs childhood musical makeup of Classical music, Grunge, Brit-pop and classic rock started to be infiltrated by electronic beats from the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Orbital, The Prodigy and Leftfield and Salmonella Dub.A fateful first night in London saw her see a sharp left turn and a trip to see Faithless at Wembley, resulted in the next 6 years working to fund gig and festival tickets.

It was only a matter of time before the turntables were approached and her Dj journey began.In her own words.
"I played my first “set”  age 12 on a bright yellow and black double cassette deck at a class party. “Give Me Hope Johanna” by Eddy Grant  was a hit until someone spilled juice all over the floor and ended the event. 
Life in the UK introduced me to warehouse raves, clubs like Fabric and The End, festivals and the possibility that you don’t have to be famous or an exceptionally skilled instrumentalist to be able to share music with people. 

A friend taught me the basics of mixing on vinyl, helped me buy some turntables, introduced me to the dangers of crate digging in London and gave me a few gigs... and here we are.
On her influences and career highlights....

"The Chemical Brothers were one of the first (2000) and last (2020) international electronic artists I saw live. I’ve seen them several times and they never disappoint. 

Andrew Weatherall used to play regularly at a tiny working mens club near my house. 

I wore out Adam Freeland's FabricLive and DJ Philippa's Welcome to a New Zealand House Compilation albums. 

Now my biggest influences are my many talented friends— the silver lining of lockdown was that so many local producers and DJs got more opportunities to play. 

I love that my music “family” now includes artists that I used to admire from afar. 

Heylady, Amandamania, Murry Sweetpants, OCDJ, Sanoi, Jake Rattler, Becky, Nick Munday, Marcos Alonso, The Dastardly Bounder, Mamadafunk, Sigmund, DylanC, Facettes, Out of Sorts (I don’t want to miss anyone out!)

I am influenced in some way by every DJ I ever see play- no matter who they are.  I have been lucky enough to go to many festivals and events all over the world, but some of my favourite events are here in NZ. 


Watching people fascinates me- I have seen people go absolutely nuts to the most random of tracks, so that has definitely shaped the way I construct my sets. There is something truly magical about watching people get lost in music, and helping them get lost in music with you is even better…. It’s rare that I play a set without a Beat&Path release in it. I always try and work in something of my own.
A left of centre career highlight was being Grandmaster Flash’s emergency dentist before his Bay Dreams show! I don’t know who was more nervous…Afterwards he signed a few records sleeves for me and I got to watch him play up close.
He has great chat, a bit of a dark side, and I freely admit I LOVED it when he greeted me like a long lost friend in a green room full of famous international artists. 
In the last  18months I have played with and to some of my dearest friends at intimate gatherings in the forest, at Splore with my children and my mum watching, and at other festivals and venues I never dreamed I would play at five years ago. I am booked for R&A, Splore and Relish for 2022 so far, so am crossing everything that this summer goes ahead!
Sarah is also has notable skills in the studio with her own productions peppering her sets, an EP release and more releases in the coming months Miss B is a rising star in the production world.
The mix she has turned in for LO-FI is a trip through melodic soundscapes. walking the ropes of moody and deep, and traversing the steps to uplifting and emotional. Its a listen that makes 2 hours slide away.

"As soon as I arrived onto the Playa I found myself running in the blazing heat from the gates, asking frantically for directions to a place I had never been to before, a loud spot in the vast expansive horizon known as Robot Heart. I couldn’t believe I was going to be late!
Yes, it’s true, I missed my slot, I arrived 1 hour after, but the magic of this moment really encapsulated and introduced the whole Burning Man experience for me with many new friends trying their best to me to get there on time - it was priceless and unforgettable. 
Once there, Benjamin said “Frankie, you're late, what happened?” to which I replied “Mate, I’m Italian, I’m actually right on time!”

Few people know, 15 hours before arriving, I was stranded in Las Vegas with Julien and Claudia, with no ride to Black Rock City. Claudia said: "let’s try to call Ole and Finn, they have a badass RV, they can give us easily a ride!” The two Norwegian guys were still in Vegas and once they picked us up the “Get Frankie on the Bus” mission started. We played music on the road, shared the dark and the bright sides of spinning records, saw ghost cities, our GPS died, and we watched the dazzling stars in the beautiful night sky of the desert. I can say it out loud, what an unbelievable adventure and what an unbelievable beginning.

Here I am after that wild road trip, playing tracks I've been carrying since I started playing over a decade ago, finally landing where I was supposed to be, always looking for the next adventure.

Thanks to all the people who danced that morning, thanks to Robot Heart, thanks to my wife Alessandra and my family, thanks to the badass RV, thanks to Nico and Timur for helping to make it happen, thanks to David and Anna for their support, and of course, a big thank you to everyone I met on the Playa."

"8-Bit Lebowski: 100% Electronic” is a tribute to several seemingly unrelated entities that are, individually, quite important to me: chip music, one of the greatest films of all time, White Russians, flamenco re-arrangements of classic rock tunes, fake pornos, Kenny Rogers, and so much more. Although I originally performed these songs as a one-off live set at Lebowski Fest Philadelphia 2011, I quickly realized that taken as a whole, they actually make up quite a comprehensive little release. I feel like it really ties my discography together. 

So, in honor of the movie's 15th anniversary (the very date of this EP's release!), here you have it, to listen at your own leisure, whether through your car’s tape deck (provided it’s not stolen), with your significant other (provided she’s not kidnapped) or during a chilled-out rug meditation session (provided the rug, also, is not stolen). Best of all, it’s not, ugh, techno-pop.
