Snoretex is the solo recording project from Sam Willis, one of half of WALLS, the two-piece signed to Kompakt who released their debut album last to a cluster of killer reviews. Mojo made it ‘Electronica Album Of The Year’, while the NME, iDJ and DJ magazine all garnered it with 9/10 ratings. 

Snoretex inhabits a similar world. Woozy, opaque layers and crystal melodies are skewered with fuzz and feedback over burbling midtempo drums and sequencers. ‘Imagine a world where Philip Glass, Harmonia and Mr Fingers intermingle in euphoric hamony,’ says Sam smiling.

‘Strange Aeons’ is one of the first Snoretex fruits to blossom. An early mixdown circulated on some key underground blogs towards the end of last year, while Buzzin’ Fly boss Ben Watt featured it in his new Sunday night radio residency at BBC 6Music. Now sweetened and re-mastered it makes its full release on Buzzin’ Fly.

On the flipside Watt coaxes longtime Chicago underground house dons, Boo Williams and Glenn Underground out into the light. Famous for releases on labels such as Guidance Recordings, Rush Hour and Cajual, here they adopt their SJU Muzic (Strictly Jaz Unit) moniker to deliver a superb spacey-but-bumpin’ house re-interpretation.

In the summer of 2010 Mercury Music Prize winners (and Everything But The Girl fans) The xx asked Tracey Thorn and her long-time partner in EBTG Ben Watt (also Strange Feeling label boss) to record a track from the The xx’s debut album for a special compilation the band were commissioning of covers of the album's songs by their favourite artists. Unfortunately the project fell apart a few months later for numerous logistical reasons (not least the second wind breathed into the original album by the Mercury Prize victory) but not before Tracey had sung a new version of one the album most beautiful tracks, 'Night Time'. 

The track gathered dust for a few months but it is rightfully seeing the light of day on a new EP from Tracey Thorn called the 'Night Time EP', released on Strange Feeling on October 31, much to the delight of all concerned. 'Night Time' was handpicked by Tracey and features Ben guesting on guitars and backing vocals (it is the first time the two have played together on a recording for over ten years) with the drums, programming and mix coming courtesy of Tracey's current production collaborator Ewan Pearson (producer of both Tracey's recent acclaimed album 'Love And Its Opposite' and 2007's 'Out Of The Woods'). As Tracey re-articulates Romy's lyrics, Ben fluidly arpeggiates the original interwoven guitar lines into one seamless pass, while Ewan adds crisp fresh half-tempo drums, atmospheric misty synths and booming bass. 

On the flip side, one of 'Love And Its Opposite''s most popular tracks 'Swimming' is revisited. Ewan buffs up and re-edits last year's remix by (then emerging and now) current dance producers-du-jour, Visionquest (Detroit's Seth Troxler, Ryan Crosson, Lee Curtiss) into a new version, with judicious new drum parts and a sparkling widescreen mix-down. Expect serious late summer club action. Meanwhile, UK underground house legend Charles Webster adds his magic totoo, with a beautifully percussive main mix and a rainy, autumnal dub.

In brief - Spanish guitarist and field recording expert from the Tenerife, Anatol Rivero Brito aka Towards Green drops his atmospheric debut EP on Ben Watt's Buzzin' Fly.  Ace house remix from Bristol–based Arkist (Hotflush/Applepips).

What's inside? Clockwork whirrs and clicks keep pace with gauzy shadows of intricate electric guitar and warm sunset sub bass. Atmospheric, twitchy and beautiful. The EP closes with a live version of the title track performed with his trio.

In between comes a blissed-out house mix from one of the new Bristol scene’s most exciting talents. Adam Gazla aka Arkist has already made his name on Appleblim’s sublime Applepips label and Scuba’s Hotflush. Flashes of beat science and rich dub bass underpin a super-warm deep house groove.

Towards Green / 'Last Page'

'In the Cold, Cold Night' is the first track to be released from Tracey's upcoming album of modern and retro Christmas classics, 'Tinsel and Lights' (album out Oct 29/30).

Written by Jack White and originally performed by The White Stripes, it forms part of a unique transatlantic 'double A-side' digital single. While Strange Feeling release 'In the Cold, Cold Night' in the UK, Tracey's American label Merge Records will release the album's title track 'Tinsel and Lights' on the same day.

Ben Watt Midsummer DJ Mix, Recorded Aug 5 2009

Born in Cape Town, and now living in Manchester, Alex Blaxx is 21 years-old. Buzzin’ Fly’s Ben Watt ran across his music in September 2012 after a tip-off on influential music blog fluxmusic.net and went on to preview one of the tracks on his BBC 6Music 6Mix residency a couple of nights later; it garnered the most texts and tweets for any track played that night.

The upshot is Alex’s debut three-track EP on Buzzin' Fly. Simple raw, deep house.

In the words of Fluxmusic: ‘The fact of the matter is that some people just understand the creative infrastructure of house music, and exactly how house’s insulated nature holds a crowd together – and it just so happens that Alex Blaxx is one of these people.’

Ben Watt's spoken-word house classic from 2005. The lyrics tell the story of a young woman looking back on a past lover, Mikey, and their days shoplifting. After writing the words, Ben approached the young London MC and singer, Estelle, to narrate them for the recording. The music harks back to the early golden age of house.

The track is offered here as a free download for a limited time to celebrate the release of 'Buzzin' Fly Anthology, Vol 2, 2005-2006' on May 20.

Back in March 2013 Ben Watt announced that his 10 year-old electronic dance label Buzzin' Fly would be closing its doors to new music to enable him to focus on new solo projects. To coincide with the news, the label promised to sign off with a comprehensive series of digital anthologies cataloguing all sixty-nine of the label's acclaimed 12" releases since 2003. Spread across five volumes, released at monthly intervals, each one would capture two years of the label's history.

It is no secret that Ben Watt has chosen to close his acclaimed label Buzzin' Fly to new music after ten great years as one of the UK's leading dance independents. But the label has chosen to go out with a bang with one final single. Unearthed from the vaults are two dazzling tracks from cornerstone artists, Rodamaal, and Manoo and Francios A.

Rodamaal's ‘Fortune' was originally completed back in 2007 but scheduling problems prevented it from being released at the time. Produced by the Franco-Portuguese trio (Rocco, Darkmountaingroup's Alex Santos and Manoo) it is a stark but emotionally-charged deep-techno masterpiece, that deserves its place alongside their other classics for the label, ‘Musica Feliz' and ‘Insomnia'. On the flip, and originally produced in 2005, is ‘Other Places' a long-lost track by Manoo and Francois A. Full of summer shimmer and heavy bass tones, it was produced by the duo during their heyday at the label, and was a secret favourite of label boss, Ben Watt. 

Two perfect swansongs. Buzz buzz.
