Some drama going on here, something is eating something else. And I just happened to have a hydrophone (= underwater microphone) hanging next to it. Recording made at the coast of Belgium in the framework of my project "Zijlijn".

Éléments sonores intemporels pris sur le vif (sons de cérémonies du langage et sons d’espèces animales, Cameroun 1989) grâce à la technique virtuose de Daniel Tourcière, preneur de son. Expérimentations dans la table d’harmonie d’un piano de concert. 
Matériaux électroacoustiques engendrés par improvisations génératives sur un échantillonneur Prothéus. Et transformés en temps réel par l’utilisation de programmes audionumériques du système GRM Tools (conçu par Hughes Vinet). Mise en place grâce au banc de montage / mixage multipiste numérique Pro Tools. 

Le sentiment qui s’est épanoui dans cette création est né lors de mon travail de compositeur avec les chorégraphes Joëlle Bouvier et Régis Obadia. Cycle de spectacles autour de la tragédie grecque, il a été commencé en 1996 avec Les Chiens, poursuivi par le duo Indaten (1998) et achevé l’année dernière avec Fureurs. Il atteint ici son dénouement. P.R.

Based on a single shape, the piece consists of two different natural harmonic rows ( first part following the natural harmonics available on cello strings and second part being a combination of harmonics of other string instruments). Every natural string harmonic has its unique character, depending on the string it is produced on. Touching the string lightly can produce icy high tones or warm, flute like, lower resonances. It is an attempt to bring out the poetry of the microtonal landscape of these particular rows and observe the constant change of tone combinations that mostly occur only once. Other instruments extend the harmonies and give breathe to the structure. To add immediacy, some freedom to make intuitive choices is given to the musicians. While studying the material, I had a picture stuck in my mind as making one of the gigantic wind driven and self moving sculptures of the dutch artist Theo Jansen, hoping that if I get the calculations right, the piece will also catch a wind and reveal something in the sound, that I was unaware of.
