'Embers' takes the listener on a journey through the engine of a steam train. It depicts the spaces and substances which can be found within, focusing on the coal, fire, water and steam. You will need good quality speakers to hear the really low frequencies used.

The world's first steam train was finished in 1804, built by British inventor Richard Trevithick. These locomotives are powered through the burning of a combustible material, usually coal, which heats water in the boiler to produce steam.

When preparing for a steam train to depart, coal is shoveled into the copper firebox and burned to create a fire. This firebox is surrounded by water, but it takes hours for the fire to heat up enough to boil the water and produce steam. Smoke from the fire is passed through the 'smoke tubes' and drawn out through the chimney. Steam is collected from the dome at the top of the boiler and sent through pipes to the pistons. Once there is enough pressure, the high pressure steam pushes the pistons back and forth creating energy for the wheels to turn. The "chuff-chuff" of a steam train is the sound of the low pressure steam being exhausted.

An ember can be defined as 'a glowing or smouldering piece of coal or wood' (www.thefreedictionary.com). Each piece of coal is a starting point for the combustion process which has powered steam trains for over 200 years.
