Konduku (@kondukukonduku) returns to the Delsin Mantis series with an exciting double pack (Mantis 09 + 10) which dives deeper into his remarkable fractured rhythms and light-touch synthesis. Over the course of nine tracks Ruben Üvez straddles the space between introspective headphone trips and hypnotising dancefloor elegance, operating in a liminal zone of fluid tempos, submerged atmospheres and pointillist beats. It's an open-ended but clear-sighted approach that aligns perfectly with the direction of the Mantis series.

On Mantis 09 Üvez follows a progressive, patient arc of energy from the glassy chimes and pin-prick percussion of 'Özlem' via 'Scale's reduced, atonal echo chamber and the half-time prowl of 'Derinkuyu' to the dense, humid pressure of 'Swerve'. Restraint maintains throughout, even as we take in a broad spectrum of the Konduku sound.

This is a studio mix, started with an initial live take and then combed over meticulously with automated filters, eq, and fx. This is the same setup I use to play out, minus the automation. There is rarely a point when only one track is playing. I always try to find mixes that feel like a new track emerges from the combination. I imagine the optimal listening environment to be eyes-closed with headphones on, but I also hope you will feel an irresistible urge to move at some points ;)

My sound has evolved a lot over the past year living in New York. While I feel everyone knows me primarily for my percussive broken beat productions and sets, anyone who's seen me play recently will know I've been leaning heavily into driving psychedelic techno and hard groove house. So I wanted to make something that reflects my evolving tastes.

In that sense this mix is very much a statement of range and intention. I'll always love UK Bass and broken beat stuff but there's nothing like a good deep grooving wormhole to lose yourself in as a DJ and a dancer. 

Also, having been heavily involved in plant medicine this past year I've been making an effort to incorporate sounds that connect with my experiences in ceremony—sometimes light and joyous, often dark, cavernous and all-consuming. But, not to take myself or this vision too seriously, this mix is first and foremost for moving your bones and shaking ass, but in a hypnotic sort of way.

Hope you enjoy it start to finish.

The Bunker Podcast 226: SisterZo

Manuele Chiaravalloti is Mod21 an italian specialist in profound and elaborated techno we’ve been following for a long while. For this album he delivers the best of his abilities in production, diving deep into the most intricate realms in the genre.

What do we do now is the beatless introduction to this sonic journey setting the pace for Anthropology of failure introducing the beat but still meditative and liquid.

Doomsday Clock goes straight into danceable business, using effected continuous synth lines over a clean groove that grows in intensity as the beats go by. Several layers of pads add space to the sound in this dreamy techno number.

On Cold silence the beat goes busier and percussive elements are the main element making this one the perfect dj tool.

Black heart is electric and stripped down, using a few crispy synthetic elements to keep the tension although there is no kick in the equation.

Escalation of violence introduces a bit of distortion and roughness on the rhythm but preserving the mental approach on sequences and textures.

Beyond the edge of an habitable world slows down the pace and uses hypnosis via repetition to reach the appropriate state of mind in the first hours of the club.

 It gets into your brain follows, giving exactly what the title suggests, with an erratic synth line flowing over a relentless groove. This one will cause some brain damage when listened to on the proper sound systems.

Come on honey, it's real money funny title for a serious brain melting exercise that reminds us of the sound of early minimal heroes like Basic Channel. Man is a tool goes in the same direction, focusing on the dub side.

You were the good one Qerndu changes directions drastically, diving into scifi alien areas, obsessive and tooly.

The virtual denies tactility, removes the beat and reduces the sound elements to the minimum getting closer to the end of this sonic journey.

Last track, Loyalty does not end with death acts as an electronic lullaby where harmonies and lush pads are the starring.

Token is pleased to announce Metabolism, the sophomore album from Sigha. The LP marks James Shaw’s third release on the Token label following his singles Christ Figures and Our Father. Metabolism represents an arrival: the artist offers his definitive statement on a production aesthetic that has been in development over the last few years.

Shaw’s work as Sigha has always placed the listener at a centrifugal point that invites a clandestine hypnosis rather than an abject hysteria. Cavernous low ends fixed firmly and effectively in a mono space tether the music to the body, while exquisitely executed white noise patterns and crystalline pads warp and hiss around the stereo environment. This keen ear for distinction within the frequency spectrum acts as the central theme on the LP.

Metabolism encompasses a power dynamism that departs from the explicitly greyscale finish found on his more conceptual work as Sigha and as A Vision Of Love for Guy Brewer’s Avian label. Though elements of Metabolism maintain a driven, corrosive quality, each searing sequence or mordant drum machine hit occupies its own space. On high-energy dance floor moments and abstract tracks alike, Shaw’s approach to distortion is one that sets out with an objective to separate components rather than to bind them. This creates a matrix of aural stimuli that remain heady and inherently propulsive, but are realised in a fashion more akin to high fidelity sound design than processes traditionally associated with the techno genre.

The record possesses a powerful musicality beyond this acute attention to form and structure. In the past, Shaw’s productions have often married high-energy drum work with subtly shifting minor keys spread around the sonic periphery. On Metabolism, emotive leads sit squarely and comfortably in the foreground, and build towards rapturous crescendos that are crisp and omnipresent throughout the mix. These careful layers generate the extraordinary tension that has since become a hallmark of the British artist’s work.

Metabolism is a techno album, but its frame of reference is generous, drawing on the finest facets of the artist’s own varied discography and the wider electronic music landscape. Cohesive and modern, Shaw’s latest work eschews a handful of riffs on a single idea in favour of a multi-faceted, fully realised expression of what the genre can be - it is a vital addition to the Token label’s already enviable catalogue of releases.

Stanislav Tolkachev, oft lauded as one of the shining lights of the genre, debuts on Token with his unique take on contemporary Techno. The five track EP, titled There Is No Cure, highlights the producer's infamously idiosyncratic style, showcasing his ability as an artist to draw in disparate moods to his work whilst maintaining a powerful sense of cohesion.

Deconstructed opener Two Treats Right Now, instantly recognisable as Tolkachev's music, sets the tone for the record. A single, curiously disharmonious patch waxes & bends for just under three and a half minutes while off kilter rides and hat patterns are introduced (and occasionally removed) to add to the delicious cacophony, the result being a kind of sonic palette cleanser. Follow up Whole Life Order maintains that sense of reduction and disharmony, but places the listener firmly on the dance floor - heavily saturated, delayed kicks drive the work while a live lead sequence sits atop. To some degree A side closer Delayed Gratification does what it says on the tin, holding the listener in stasis - a perfectly executed bridge piece designed explicitly for DJ use.

If the A side of There Is Now Cure is characterised by a kind of brutish darkness, the B offers a lighter approach to Tolkachev's work. Title track There Is No Cure is nothing short of anthemic. Built around those same components so favoured by the Ukrainian - the driven kick drums and isolated, singular sequences, There Is No Cure is crisp and playful, communicating a palpable sense of hope, all the more compounded by what has come before. About Time, the EP closer, continues these thematic concerns, but appears gentler still in its articulation. Soft but still dense, and beautifully produced, it's a deeply moving piece of music built sparingly that ties up a fantastic first offering for Token.
