AOS was, initially, to be the second 12", and the third entry, in Ediciones Danza Negra's catalog. Three years went by, however, and after sorting through the challenges - financial, logistic and existential - of running an independent label in the South American context, and several iterations later, the release finally took shape: 
the fourth of our modest catalog, and the first to be recorded on tape. 

Why? What for? More-than-three years is enough time for those questions to appear, time and time again. It's enough time to cultivate the elusive humility that helps question if these records should be heard, or not. In Junn's case, we think it is. 

The problem with exoticising locality is to comodify music's origin as a shortcut for visibility in foreign markets, flags as beacons in an impenetrable ocean of music, instead of feeding back to the dynamics that birthed it. South America is inherent to the EDNA project not as a narrative crouch, but as a target: a space to occupy, 
mouths to feed, nights to agitate. AOS is precisely that, a collection of music made in Colombian soil, a signal asking for an echo from its streets and from its people, an invitation to the trance of the dancefloors that gave it its embrionary spark.  

Across 9 tracks Junn synthesizes (ha!) a sound that conjures images of a desolate and labyrinthic Bogotá, ambiguous rhythms that march in stasis while longing textures pulsate without finding the other. The tape includes revisions from fellow bogotanos Juanpablo and Lunate (the latter almost entirely responsible for the 3 year delay), who join Junn, and the choir of others who translate in audio their passing through the 
continent.

To recognize ourselves in stillness, the absence of collectivity and the danceless nights have changed the way we inhabit spaces once dedicated to sound. Multitudes dilute to form dancing silhouettes, each in their own restricted space. We remember a stuck highway to success, it's routes with no exit, and we hold in our hands the nostalgia of unfulfilled horizons. Multiple possibilities of recognition, abundance and kinship: the mirage of tomorrow. 

The straight arrow of time changes, too, breaks. After months of silence and newfound sounds, we live in a simultaneous past-present-future.The past is revitalized with ever new experience, but it carries with it the uncertainties of the future and we're mobilized by this multi-temporality. It is no longer longing and desire alone, but also paths that are untraveled and uncertain, ours after all. 

We walk between the steps we take, and amongst those that follow, through the transcendental sound that bound us to an instant, and not by the promised scenery.  

We walk because that's all that's left to do, shake off the stillness and build our present.The mirage of tomorrow vanishes and we're reflected in the uncertainty and in the presence of an infinite 
now: what do we listen to, how are we listening, with what artifacts, with whom. There are no answers, only the breaking of the questions and the renewed temporality, dense and conflictive, with tensions beyond the passing of time.  

We've carried with us a heavy and confusing tomorrow, one that misplaced our present. Maybe it's time to see, feel and listen to what we ate today.

Jason Letkiewicz has always swum against the musical tides, flitting between different solo pseudonyms (including Steve Summers, Death Commando and Alan Hurst) and collaborative projects (most notably Mutant Beat Dance) in order to explore different aspects of his leftfield inspirations. With his latest release, a first full-length outing for Artificial Dance entitled Mirage Information, the Chicago-based artist is operating under an alias that celebrates this approach: Opposing Currents.

It’s an alias he’s used once before – for a track featured on Chronditic Sound’s 2015 cassette compilation Non-Christian Referent – but Mirage Information sounds like an artistic rebirth. Densely layered, mind-altering and often intense, the album’s seven tracks update the Cold War paranoia and pulsating electronics of EBM and industrial music for today’s complex and chaotic political climate.

Throughout, Letkiewicz smothers off-kilter drum machine rhythms and throbbing, body-jacking synthesizer basslines in untold layers of hazy audio detail, creating a dystopian sound soup out of which alien electronic melodies, psychedelic acid lines and barely audible vocals emerge. At times, such as on angry opener “Lying Awake”, the extra-terrestrial “Dissolve” and foreboding “Shallow Grave”, we’re invited to dance in the darkness in celebration of impending doom. On other occasions, such as the poignant and melancholic closing cut “It Awaits”, Letkiewicz simply seems exasperated at the chaos that is life in the 21st century. It makes for a genuinely arresting and thought-provoking listen.
