Mais ce qu’on s’est pris dans la gueule, cette dernière année, c’est le tsunami de nos propres personnes, le champ miné de nos peurs les plus profondes, l’isolement, la solitude, la perte de contrôle la plus totale, la disparition de cette liberté, nous petits fruits d’un certain capitalisme confortable, dont on avait, finalement, jamais mesuré la beauté, l’infinie jouissance, l'incontrôlable course contre la montre, cette excitation divine qui nous flippait autant qu’elle nourrissait nos chemins.

It has been about 53 months since the last solo Purl album was released. 'Renovatio' marked the end of an emotional process related to music-making that I felt had become too heavy for me to continue, and the title signified the rebirth I felt was necessary. I thought at the time that perhaps this would be the last Purl album.

Since then there have been 17 singles, EPs and collaborative albums released that in different ways opened my mind and heart beyond anything that came before. There has also been solo releases planned that did not happen (yet), for different reasons. 

'Himmelsandar' isn't really something new. Then again, I wonder if there ever has been or will be anything new from this stream of awareness and emotion that I call Purl. It somehow seems to me like everything essential was present from the beginning, and I'm not sure if anything has been added to it since. I dream of starting new projects; painting on a blank canvas again. But nothing here was painted on such a canvas. Everything was painted and repainted, so many times that the original idea may no longer be distinguished other than as the faintest wisp of something... ethereal.

Our first ever premiere introduces the 129th imprint on Montreal-based label, Archipel. This album from Italian Rico Casazza hosts 8 intriguing tracks, 4 of which are available only for those who invest in the wax!

Our featured track is one of those vinyl bonuses, named as the entire album is...'Yaman'. Its hypnotic and music box styled melody, is the first stand out feature. As the electro-led beat and energetic claps develop, so does its wonderful 303 bassline. The track epitomises Rico's style in its perfect balance between his melancholic songwriting and his desire to make people move.

After ten years of producing electronic music, Rico Casazza has created a successful identity for himself and his moody, yet melancholic style of making music. Casazza has released on labels such as Soma, Archipel, Plastic City and our very own platform Loose Lips, which has helped him establish himself amongst the ranks of diverse producers in London. This is no easy task due to the sheer volume of quality artists hailing from this great city. Whether it is Ambient, House, Electro or IDM that you are looking for, Casazza will have his own tripped-out and crunchy take on it. His highly effective, sample-based way of producing reinforces these stylistic qualities. 

Rico Casazza has had a very successful career so far with over fifteen releases under his belt and even with this impressive figure behind him, he shows no signs of slowing down.  Showing the depths of his musical knowledge, he's turned his hand to teaching others how to use Ableton live and all he knows about the DAW. As well as teaching, he also spends time working on his hybrid live set that gives an insight into his love for analogue synthesisers. Rico’s live performance has taken him around Europe and South America, adding to both the maturity and vast array of influences behind his productions.

Rico Casazza’s latest offering is eight tracks in the form of his second LP. We have the privilege of premiering ‘Yaman’, which demonstrates his no-holds-barred approach to writing. As a teacher, producer, live performer and an incredible selector behind the decks, Casazza has cultivated a varied and detailed range of skills. We here at Loose Lips have followed his musical journey thus far with great curiosity, and can’t wait to see the ways in which he will surprise us in the future.

“The Storm” in the title, Vella explains, refers to the dark period in human history that we are currently experiencing and the accompanying personal anxieties; “Sleeping Through” is surviving it, a moment of personal protection while the turbulence rages around us. It is neither ambient nor electronic music, instead Vella is exploring a form of analogue synthesis that balances light and dark.

The eight tracks were mostly built live, looping and layering a single performance, pushing repetition and patterns - exploratory, cellular variations on a theme, lyrical songs that say something without lyrics. For the most part, Sleep Through the Storm is an expression of sadness and lament, but it is proof that there can be harmony and consonance in misery.
