Pop Life

Unique Marie is an Oakland-based rapper and entertainer known for her collaborations and for being an energetic performer and passionate songwriter.
Unique Marie has a style that is reflective of her Oakland roots.  Delivering stories to her audiences with a gutsy voice and open stage presence, Unique weaves her experiences with the streets, into her lyrics. Rapper Dru Down says that Unique raps with a style and purpose that makes her the First Lady of the Mob. Additionally, rapper Too Short, who Unique toured with as a teenager, believes “she has a sound that is as gritty as ever”.

Unique suspended her music career for a short period for personal reasons, but now with the release of her new single “Pop Life”, she marks the re-dedication to her music that her fans and those who like a gritty female rapper want to hear. Unique says “sometimes life happens, but my music is important to me and I want to continue releasing new music”  
 
Born in Berkeley in September 1980, Unique grew up with her mother, who moved them from East Oakland to South Central Los Angeles and later back to the Bay Area where she attended high school in East Oakland at Castlemont High. It’s here where she began gaining the streetwise knowledge reflected in her music.  At the age of 13, she authored her first rap, 
As a teenager, to get started in the music business, Unique took on backup recording roles and later recorded on her first single Cell Block 2 on the Cell Block Records label. During this time, she also recorded tracks with Dollars and Spence Records. Unique first appeared on stage opening for Too Short. She went on to open for another artist, including E-40, Nate Dog, and Kurrupt to name a few. She later toured with Kiesha Cole and Lil Wayne.
During this time, she also appeared in several videos with Artist like Nate Dog, Luniz, Sunni Ali and E-40. Also, more recently in Dru Down’s, 501s,
Unique has a large following on social media which see entertains daily with insights and observations about experiences with people and what’s going on in general.
Pop Life, which is set to be released June 2017 seeks to describe why we have so many victims of gun violence. Unique states “with all the gun violence in Oakland, I wanted to do a record about why we feel the need to carry a gun… well, we got guns because we feel threatened”. She seeks listeners to understand “it’s not just the hood kids that feel threatened and feel the need to protect themselves, it’s ordinary people, it’s the person at the grocery store that may have a pistol in their car’. Pop Life also serves as a signal to her fans that she is back to her music and will soon follow her single with additional tracks. Unique is re-introducing herself and proving at the same time she is returning to the world of independent Hip Hop/Rap
