When writing this series, I wanted to created a bridge between what young band students hear every day on the radio, TV, & movies with other types of music that they may not be familiar. I also wanted to make sure the
students and their audiences have fun! This is not a new idea. We have added rock/disco beats and jazz swing to Bach and Beethoven before. This series is simply an updated version, infusing good classical music with hip
hop, funk, and more. With each arrangement comes a CD (or you can download the mp3 track from the C. Alan Publications website) with an engaging drum ‘n’ bass beat that complements the arrangements, varying as the pieces progresses, yet remaining simple enough to make it easy to play along. The band will have a blast playing along to a booming bass while learning important classical melodies. The arrangements are easy and well within the reach of younger players. They may also be performed without the recorded track, but it’s much more fun with it! As a middle school band director, I was always looking for fun ways to introduce my students to all kinds of music. I was also looking for a fun way to keep students engaged and help them realize the commonalities between their pop music and other styles. This series will help you with these objectives. Most of all, have fun!

"Number Theory, Vol. 2" is a collection of works that link musical characteristics to other disciplines using numbers 1-5 as the common thread. These works vary not only in difficulty (intending from intermediate to medium-advanced high school percussionists) but also a range of extra-musical topics that can be explored away from the practice room.

A wonderful little concert march. This Schubert classic is well-known and was originally composed for piano duet. Originally in D major, Stuart Johnson's score is in Bb and straightforward for all instruments.

Written in D minor, including an optional but essential drum set part, every section gets to shred while crushing rhythmic ostinatos and melodic passages just as reminiscent of Vivaldi as they are of Metallica! Your students – and their bow arms –  will never be the same!

Blaze of Metal (String Orchestra w/ Optional Drums Gr. 4) - Bryan Sanguinito

In Greek mythology, “Elysium” was the final resting place for the souls of the heroic and the pure. It has come to mean any place or state of bliss or delight. Paradise. Originally written for percussion trio in the collection “Triology,” the piece has been expanded both in personnel and in duration, adding an slow introduction that sets up the ethereal mood.

"Be That of the Wind" is a piece for woodwind quintet and 8 percussionists that draws inspiration from the four tenets outlines in Sun Tzu’s The Art of War: "Let your rapidity be that of the wind, your gentleness that of the forest. In raiding and plundering be like ﬁre, be immovable like a mountain." As such, the 6-minute work divides into four interconnected vignettes—as swift as the wind, as ﬁerce as ﬁre, as gentle as the forest, and as immovable as the mountain, with a quick ﬁnal nod to the wind. The thematic and harmonic material was generated by transforming the name Natalie—a young ﬂute player from the band program whose life ended way too soon in the fall of 2023— into chromatic pitches.

The title "All That is Left" is a play on the "Litany Against Fear" from Frank Herbert’s novel,  "Dune." “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it is gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” I will be all that is left.

Steppin’ Out With Poppy was inspired by the composer's black Spoodle, Poppy, who at the time of writing was three years old and quite mad! Poppy loves to go on long runs, hang at the park with her dog buddies but most of all loves chewing on her bones. Don't go near her when she's got one!

Three Laughs (perc ens 10-14) - Arthur Lipner

This intermediate work for 7-8 percussionists tells the story of Theseus’s ship as it approaches harbor and repairs begin. As you strip away broken parts and replace with new ones, the story of the ships’ adventures are told. Once the repairs are completed the ship sails away ready for its next adventure.

Scored for 14-16 percussionists, "A World in Us" is a celebration of enduring friendship. The exciting 5-1/2 minute work takes its title from the following quote from The Diary of Anaïs Nin: “Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born.”

Across both rural highways and urban intersections, handmade memorials appear: white crosses, wilted flowers, photographs behind glass. My inspiration among these is ghost bikes, bicycles painted entirely white and chained where cyclists have passed. These are "Descansos," from the Spanish word for “rest,” marking sudden loss in places of transit. Whether a roadside shrine in the desert or a spectral bike on a city street, each is an altar of absence: a silent pause in the landscape and a trace of lives carried by the transient vessels we call our bodies.

Part action-packed spy thriller, part bluesy groove, "Rogue Agent" is an approachable percussion ensemble piece for 6 or more players. Four-mallet technique is limited to easy-to-reach chords and difficulty is balanced between parts to ensure your group is sounding great as soon as possible.

In true “fantasy” fashion, this setting of "In the Bleak Midwinter" starts with a simple statement of the melody in the metallic keyboards against flowing triplets in the marimbas. The melody then travels through several contrasting moods and meters before returning to the simplicity of the opening measures.

"Christmas Three" features seven holiday carol arrangements for keyboard percussion trio with optional percussion accessory parts for an additional two players. These audience-friendly arrangements of familiar tunes are perfect for community performances and run-out concerts requiring only three keyboard instruments (glockenspiel, vibraphone, 4.3-octave marimba) with options for a larger ensemble by doubling parts and/or adding accessory percussion.
