The new record & debut vinyl release from the electronic and spoken word project of Hull native & Manchester based artist Gareth Smith aka Vanishing (Tesla Tapes, Tombed Visions)

On the night of 21st October 1904, out in the Dogger Bank area of the North Sea, Russian warships mistook a British fishing trawler fleet for enemy Japanese warships, and opened fire. One of the fishermen killed that night was George Henry Smith, great-grandfather of Gareth Smith, the lyricist and artist behind Vanishing.
 
55°N, 5°E, performed on the 22nd and 23rd October 2017 on the 113th anniversary of that disaster in the dramatic outdoor amphitheatre of The Dock, Hull, and now given a full vinyl release on Outer Reaches, reawakens that history.

Scored for electronics, saxophone, violin and spoken word, three musicians and three dancers shift through five movements of a cycle. The music is part Throbbing Gristle soundscape, part Vaughn Williams folksong, part John Cale drone…part something else entirely. 

Brutalist noise & sub-bass, febrile drum machines, tense, resplendent strings and expressive intonations wade in and out. Moving between emotion and restraint, Smith communicates his fragmented narrative amongst suspense and unrest; an account of disaster and aftermath; of voids carved into a community in which family members and strong presences have been erased. 

Haunting traces imprinted in the collective memory; only murals, statues and memorials remain. Trauma and absence echoing down paternal lines.

The tempo is slightly faster than A1, and it sounds like an extraterrestrial night out. Euphoric synth twists bring in the break while the bass drum toys with the rhythm only to zap it back home with the force of cosmic gravity.“Dream-Life Cycles” opens up the B-side tough, with an acid line and bass drum syncopation sure to bring out the stomp.
