Rising Anjunadeep star Lane 8 announced the release of his debut album in style recently, with the brilliant new single ‘Ghost feat. Patrick Baker’. On remix duties are a diverse trio of talented producers; techno innovator Audion, Aus Music prodigy Bwana and blogger's favourite Luvian.

After collaborating with Lane 8 on a track on the upcoming album, Matthew Dear took to his notorious Audion guise to remix ‘Ghost’, following remixes for legendary acts like Leftfield, Four Tet, Dubfire and Seth Troxler. Completely twisting the mood of the original, cutting the vocal over a frenetic groove he delivers a gnarly late-night techno cut.

Bwana has marked himself out as one to watch with his excellent EPs on Will Saul’s Aus Music, and his epic take on ‘Ghost’ is another winner, playing off the subtle melodies of the original with a huge bass hook, and Patrick Baker’s evocative lyrics.

UK based Luvian has been bubbling away for a while, with his early tracks picking up millions of plays on YouTube and Soundcloud. He takes his remix away from the club, instead opting for a gorgeous poolside version, stripping back almost entirely to sparse percussion, sensual melodic textures and warped vocals.

Anjunadeep stalwarts Eli & Fur a.k.a Eliza Noble & Jennifer Skillman make a statement homecoming with the four track ‘Night Blooming Jasmine’ EP. The release sees the UK duo return to their songwriting roots - putting their voices front and centre, whilst blending their trademark rolling grooves with a refined production style.

“Our journey as club DJs has inspired us in so many ways and we wanted to draw from those experiences, as well as our more song-based tracks earlier in our career and make something a little different that means a lot to us artistically. We feel this EP merges these two worlds together and we hope that what you hear in these songs, is our love of song-writing as well as the darker, more melodic side of electronic music that tells stories and creates emotions.”

Slow-burning melodies and tense chugging basslines unfurl beneath the reflective lyrics of second EP single ‘Something Was Real’ - “I was walking home from a party that had gotten a bit out of control, my phone died and I’d left alone. My brain was in overdrive, the sun was rising and I was playing things over and over in my mind. Trying to decide whether or not to walk away from something, sometimes the not knowing can drive you crazy.”

This is Our Time Together

At 14/15 years of age, Derek and I met each other in the early 80’s at a Liberty High School dance and had been friends ever since. I remember playing records at each other’s house over the years .  We were friends and graduated together in High School in 1988. Eventually I backed off because of my hearing. My hearing loss made me somewhat antisocial and I faded away from the music scene and started a family while watching Derek soar into the underground stardom. After leaving the scene over 20 years ago, I reconnected with Derek and he had convinced me to get back into things. After mentoring me for 2 years he asked me to join his Cognitive Music label and had made me the head of a monthly mix series called The Bass Episodes. I was ecstatic. I felt like I was part of something. A brotherhood and I was happy. We were in the middle of releasing our 3rd Bass mix for the series during the weekend that he died. I was away for the weekend and will always have that “what if” scenario if I might have been there to help him. But he didn’t want anyone’s help. He was tired.
Derek was a hard person to satisfy. He was a perfectionist in everything he did and he expected nothing but 100 % from anyone associated with his work. He had always told me to “go/think outside the box”. So with this mix I am telling my story of our time together. I spent weeks searching for the right music for this mix and tried to orchestrate it just as he would suggest. The 1st part of the mix is made with tracks that are out of my usual area of what I normally play and has remixes of music that we all grew up with. The middle of the mix is my “out of the box”. Mixing 3 different versions of Jackal & Hyde’s Bad Robot which was something that I had tried to do in the past, and going into the Electro Bass tracks that I love to play today. The last 2 tracks of the mix are the remixes of the records we used to play together over and over at each other’s house when we were kids.
I’ve struggled letting go of Derek for the past 3 months and this mix is my closure. My permission to move on. I miss you brother and will keep all of our conversations and time together close to my heart.  I pray that your finally at peace and hope we see each other again on the other side some day. Long live DJ D-Xtreme aka Derek Steplight.
