You Are The One

Dedicated to the memory of a dear friend whose “heart was a valley deep” and “mind was a mountain steep.”  There are many references in this song to the play “Waiting for Godot” by Samuel Beckett, which I directed in the 90’s. In that production my friend embodied the character of Estragon perfectly and taught the world something through his presence both on and off stage. His big heart, intelligence, and laughter forever lives my heart and the hearts of many.

This piece was created during a Fredericton Arts Alliance Residency. Guitar music composed and performed by Bryan McDaniel.

All of the music on this album was inspired by the science fiction novel 'Fremder', written by Russell Hoban (1925-2011), first published in the UK by Jonathan Cape (1996) and subsequently by Bloomsbury (2003) and Penguin Modern Classics (2021). Chapter 8: The Belousov-Zhabotinsky (B-Z) reaction is a family of oscillating chemical reactions. In a Petri dish the reaction produces wavelines in concentric circles. Where they reach the edge of the dish they do not stop or rebound but vanish as though they've passed through the glass to another dimension. The B-Z reaction might be regarded as both a metaphor for the 'occulting state of being' harnessed during flicker drive and Fremder's quest for what happened aboard the 'Clever Daughter' and the identity of his father, as the truth shifts, spirals and disappears as he nears it.
