And if you look at the pampa and imagine it
in times of the Saltpeter Industry
they will see the woman and the withered stove,
the faceless worker, the sad child.

You will also see the dead hut,
the candle that illuminated their lack,
some calamine walls
and by bed, the sacks and the earth.

They will also see humiliating punishments,
chains with which to torture the worker
for days and for days against the sun;
it doesn't matter if he was dying in the end.

The fault of the worker, many times,
was the haughty pain he displayed.
