Deeply ingrained into the fabric of the British electronic music landscape, Luke Vibert shows no sign of slowing down, after an illustrious career spanning three decades (to date!). Vibert returns to Hypercolour after 2020’s hugely successful trilogy series (Amen Andrews/Modern Rave/Rave Hop) with his 18th album (not counting albums released under his other monikers Kerrier District, Plug, Wagon Christ et al).

‘GRIT.’ finds Vibert in playful mode (and, let’s face it, whenever isn’t he!), as twelve tracks of acidic and squelching drum machine tracks come rolling out to play.  Bouncy and hypnotising 303 jams of the highest order are served up here, with rhythms pulled from the electro, garage and house pools, all delivered in Vibert’s inimitable style.

We continue to explore the electronic scene and today we want to introduce you to a very unconventional artist. If you are standing, you should sit down.

Terminal 11 is the experimental electronic music project of Phoenix based artist and Arizona native Michael Castañeda. Originating in 1999 as an idea for an art piece, Terminal 11 has grown into a maximalist exploration of sound design, field recording, electronic composition and video art. He has released 14 albums since 2001 on labels including Opal Tapes, Satellite Era, Schematic, Hymen, Love Love Records, and Phthalo and has toured performing live sets in the United States and internationally.

Which artists has influenced you the most?

- Matmos and Autechre have consistently influenced me with every subsequent release after I started listening to both of them. After 20+ years I’m still excited and inspired by what comes next and what boundary will be pushed with regard to recording choice, process, and sound design. 

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- Currently I’m working on developing a follow up release on Satellite Era with an additional body of work that will be self released within the year. 

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now? 

- With the recent release of the entire Tzadik catalogue on streaming, I’ve been absorbing all of the releases I never had a chance to hear. That label has always been and continues to be relevant and inspiring. I’ve become quite a big fan of Milford Graves recently after absorbing a documentary about him called “Full Mantis” highly suggest checking that out.

What inspires you now to create music? 

- Getting away from music inspires me to create it most of the time. Seeing friends and going on living life or focusing on painting tends to recharge my batteries and give me new ideas and thoughts about creating. When I’m too focused on music it feels suffocating and I want to walk away from it.

What set-up do you use when creating music? 

- I follow what feels right when I decide to create and work from there. Everything ends up finalized in Ableton but it can start with collecting field recordings, working with hardware drum machines/synths, recording a modular patch, or creating themes in Renoise. Sometimes it’s a big mix of all of them. I try not to have such a rigid approach regarding set-up and leave it to whatever feels right in the moment.
