Peruvian producer Hanuna continues his amazing year of surprising collaborations with Nyege Nyege-affiliated artists on the upcoming Matraca release 'Balandean'. After the East African excursion earlier this year when he met up with Tanzania's Jay Mitta to explore the frenetic genre of singeli, this time Hanuna heads west on an equally intensive journey to Mali where the balani legend DJ Diaki comes from - together they created both intercontinental and intergenerational EP in which West Africa meets Peru.

This week, I delved into the Grain Delay filter of Ableton‘s Live 12. While the difference from last week again seems minimal, Grain Delay offers quite different possibilities compared to Filter Delay. I must admit that I haven't spent enough time exploring the full potential of the filter. In WAV52 | 45, I have only used the filter in seven out of ten track bars. However, most of my time is spent composing music. This weeks scale is C Super Locrian. And it seems that this scale is particularly used in jazz and fusion music for improvisation and composing.

‘Neural Gain’, the forthcoming EP from Montreal’s SIM, was inspired by a period of hardship for the producer. Six years ago he was diagnosed with a brain tumour, and after receiving surgery to remove it, it came back. After going through radiotherapy and chemotherapy, he luckily pulled through. The cover art for the five-tracked release depicts the mask they used during his radiotherapy treatment – and the release is a celebration of his health and how he’s now feeling stronger than ever. “The idea behind the project was to channel events from my past to find my own sonic aesthetic,” SIM says. “Before making this EP, I didn’t have a clear vision of my musical identity. I started to find sounds that would relate to a hospital like setting, like airy, or icy sounds, tangled in an electronic and robotic body.” For ‘Lockdown’, which we’re premiering now, he’s drafted in Jamaican dancehall singer and NGUZUNGUZU/Lorenzo BITW collaborator 45DiBoss on vocals. The pair have worked together before, on ‘Graces‘, and their new cut effortlessly bangs, armed with SIM’s clear aptitude for melody and future-facing club sounds.

Caballito da a luz en una cálida Granada en septiembre de 2010, fruto del reencuentro entre Bigote y Grita, dos auténticos exploradores y recicladores de los ritmos latinoamericanos.
Pioneros en nuestro país en esta corriente ElecTropical que poco a poco va invadiendo todo el globo, empiezan sus andadas publicando varias mixtapes en su propia web y en distintos blogs del subterráneo movimiento. Pronto decidirían ilustrar sus mezclas con una explosión de gifs animados, vídeos y colores estridentes y muy chillones (creados por ellos, son también apasionados de la imagen), creando así un entorno psicodélico, divertido y uniforme. Fue entonces cuando Grita y Bigote decidieron lanzarse a la producción estableciendo su propio netlabel, siguiendo la línea de la licencia libre (Creative Commons). De esta forma, todo lo publicado en Caballito, ya sean producciones suyas o de otros artistas, fluye libremente por la red.

Caballito is born in Granada, in September 2010, when Daniel aka Bigote and David aka Grita meet again. It was a while since these two guys were checking out traditional Latino-American rhythms and discovering the Digital Cumbia, new Tropical style emerging all around the world.
Caballito, pioneer in our Country within this musical current, started publishing mixtapes in his own web and in different blogs, with the intention of breaking our hips. But quickly this world was too small for them, so they started to flood us with videos and psychedelic gifs. Was at that time when Grita y Bigote jumped into production creating their own netlabel, whose phylosophy follow the free licence idea. All the stuff published - their own productions and the collaborators’ ones - all flow freely through the web.
