Jagjaguwar is excited to announce the release of the soundtrack to Panos Cosmatos'  Beyond The Black Rainbow on 9/02. This album will be available in the United States and digitally world-wide on Jagjaguwar and physically in Europe on Death Waltz Records. This supposed "lost film" from the 1980s is inspired by obscure sci-fi movies and classic dystopian fiction - watch the trailer here. Created by Sinoia Caves, the ongoing project of Jeremy Schmidt - a disciple of the long-form cosmic synthesizer soundscape, and member of Canadian psych-and-prog pioneers Black Mountain - the soundtrack draws on inspiration from Tangerine Dream, Wendy Carlos and John Carpenter. Schmidt artfully navigates the various sonic sensibilities of his predecessors, incoporating touchstones such as mellotron choirs, glacial analogue synthesizer pads and arpeggiators. The result is ominously beauitful, otherworldly and terrifying.
 
This mesmerizing effect is evident in "Forever Dilating Eye" the first track off of Beyond The Black Rainbow, which premiered this morning via The A.V. Club.

Sinoia Caves - "Forever Dilating Eye"

Ladada is Virginia Beach native Josiah Schlater. After years of recording and touring in other bands (MAE, We Are Trees, Jake Clemons), Schlater has now settled into a lively, sun-drenched sound of his own. Taking inspiraton from early Motown and 60's garage rock, he squeezed a drum kit, a couple guitars, a 4-track, and a netbook into a small storage unit and began recording what became Ladada.

Emily & The Complexes began on the road. While his peers moved into dorm rooms and attended lectures, singer/songwriter Tyler Verhagen took to the off-ramps, truck stops, and 24-hour diners that are the unseen epicenters of a hitch-hiking sub-culture. For the better part of two years, Verhagen criss-crossed the country with nothing but a backpack and an acoustic guitar. He caught rides in semis, slept on beaches, busked on the streets, and got kicked out of San Diego. It was here on the road that he wrote the songs that would become Emily & The Complexes’ first album, Styrofoam Plate Blues (2012). When passing through Ohio he would stay with future bandmates Jordan Finke, Tom Konitzer, and Brett Gregory who were all attending classes at OSU.

Fast-forward two years and the idea of movement is still an integral part of Emily & The Complexes’ existence. After spending much of 2013 on the road supporting their first record, the band began writing the songs that make up their new EP/7” Dirty Southern Love. Whereas the process for the first record was a rushed, cathartic release of autobiographical emotion and post-road longing, the songs that make up DSL touch on the realties of early adulthood in a more deliberate, well-crafted manner. Dirty Southern Love is lyrically diverse. Verhagen maintains a brutal honesty about life’s struggles while also combining multiple perspectives with a taste for the bizarre. The musicality of the new EP is perhaps the biggest departure from their earlier work. Dirty Southern Love features slightly slower tempos and dynamic song arrangements that allow Verhagen to croon over layers of clever guitar lines and driving bass/drums.

Tracking began in the depths of winter at The Bongo Tree studio in rural Ohio. After a month toiling away in the studio’s cold rooms, the band left for the South to mix with Drew Vandenberg (Of Montreal, Toro y Moi, Drive-by Truckers) at Chase Park Transduction in Athens, GA. With such an impressive reputation for producing great music, Chase Park and Athens were an ideal fit for the band. Vandenberg’s craft and vision meshed well with the band’s desire to produce a natural sounding record that highlights their strengths as songwriters. For the final touches, Emily & The Complexes once again turned to veteran mastering engineer, Dan Coutant (Into It Over It, Lemuria, Touche Amore) at Sun Room Audio in New York.

With the release of Dirty Southern Love, Emily & The Complexes will initially be touring down the East Coast into the South in late August, with more tours and festival appearances to follow. The songs on Dirty Southern Love mark a new stylistic awakening for the band, who have already begun work on their next batch of songs. They will follow in Verhagen’s original footsteps and take to the road to reform and define their work, knowing that long drives, sleepless nights, and the company of strangers will always be integral parts to their songwriting process.

"Ferrill Gibbs’ new album, "Significant Trees", is “The most interesting album to emerge from Mobile in a very long time.”

Amassed and performed by engineers, producers, and players who’ve graced the music of artists such as of Montreal, REM, Brantley Gilbert, Jennifer Nettles, Sonic Youth, The Allman Brothers Band and Government Mule just to name a few, in the end, the sum became equal to the parts. The players would agree when it was over: they’d made “magic.”

Ferrill Gibbs had a renaissance of songwriting following the completion of his first solo album in 2010, in which songs popped from him one by one in near-complete fashion. Three years later, he would handpick the band to record the 12 songs at Studio 1093 in Athens, GA.

Significant Trees soars to heights and plunges to lows as it interweaves between the topics of sickness, joy, spirituality, loss, and hope, and is carried to grave extremes – although delicately - by the preeminent jazz and fusion of Athens, GA’s heralded Kenosha Kid.  

The album begins lamblike with The Happy Ones: the hypnotic roll of a kick and a brush sweeping against a snare and from there begins a song that sets the stage, bringing images so cinematic and visual that it seems like it was made for a movie. 

Before the song fades, in comes the expert fiddling of Andy Carlson, arranger of strings for REM’s "New Adventures in Hi Fi", and this is representative of the entire album really: each song is surprising and building and climaxing, each trying to outdo the next. So when you hear the cacophonous but controlled second track, “Roses,” and the blistering third, “Blitzkrieg,” you know that this album is not at all what it first appeared; that each song rises psychedelically and cinematically to the last effect-laden reverberation of the final track, “Overlooking A Horse.” At which point, you’ve come to understand its ambition.

On July 15th, Brooklyn’s EULA will release their latest single “Orderly” b/w “Meadows” on Bloodmoss Records. Recorded by legendary producer Martin Bisi (Sonic Youth, Swans), EULA’s angular, aggressive sound has reached their grandest scale yet. The merging of Alyse Lamb’s guttural wails with the band’s clashing guitars, deep rumbling bass, and booming backbeat-heavy drums is as chaotic as it is meditative. Bisi’s focus on layers and textures is apparent here as he pulls back Alyse’s haunting vocals just enough for the grimy feedback to have as much of an impact in all the heaviness.
