The Swiss prolific artist serves up a preview of his follow-up to 2009’s Seventynine LP, complete with two remixes from Detroit legend Carl Craig under his c2 guise. 

Despite a vintage last few years releasing arguably some of his strongest techno material yet for Cadenza, it wouldn’t be entirely accurate to describe this as a purple patch. In reality, Mirko hasn’t really let the standard drop since he reached the big leagues, with his previous releases spanning the likes of Visionquest, Planet E and Desolat, as well as being remixed by the likes of Ricardo Villalobos and Carl Craig.  

‘Kolor’ is a sprawling latticework of melodies and textures, which traverses multiple peaks and troughs along its ten-minute journey. At the forefront, a glistening synthline cascades and swells over driving, chuggy bass, whilst splintered techy percussion skitters around.

In the first of his reworks, Carl Craig retains many of the original track’s sonic elements. The haunting music box-esque synthline remains, but against a more skeletal beat. Halfway through, a lurching bassline pushes into the fray, giving the track unexpected driving energy.

In Part Two, Craig takes a remarkable about turn, initially eschewing the rhythmic elements altogether and instead deploying a beautiful harmonic canopy of strings and pads over the bassline. He gradually feeds the drums back in, to create a majestic, if not cinematic climax.

The fact that Mirko Loko's released on labels like Cadenza, Desolat and Visionquest proves this is a guy packing serious talent. 

'Butterfly Effect' and 'Harder' are fine examples of his knack of producing the type of tracks that get you locked in for the entirety and his forthcoming 'Kolor' EP, again on Luciano's Cadenza, sees him deliver more cosmic and mesmerising power.

This week our special guest on the Cadenza Music Source to Cycle podcast is the DJ & producer, Daniel Sanchez.

Hailing from the Netherlands, Daniel was quick to establish himself on the techno party scene in Amsterdam, and also made early steps on the studio, releasing 2007’s ‘Mumbling Yeah’ track on Area Remote, which received the remix treatment from both Loco Dice and Marco Carola.

Daniel set up his own Bla Bla parties in the Dam the following year, inviting DJs like Andrea Oliva and Barem to perform, and he also launched a label of the same name, which has now been running for 6 years.

Mendo means it when he says, “Music is the most important thing in my life.” The striking new star of the Cadenza crew has devoted 18 years of his life to dance music – and he is bursting with enthusiasm for the next 18.

Born in Geneva to Spanish parents, Mendo’s first encounter with electronic music was through pirate radio. Fascinated, he borrowed some music gear. Then his mother bought him Technotronic’s “Pump Up The Jam” and he was on his way to becoming a DJ. Inspired by US house stars like Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez and Masters At Work, Mendo quickly developed a flair for sexy, pulsating house that caught the ear of legendary Miami-based producer George Morel, who signed Mendo to Groove Records for tracks including, “Everybody I Got Him,” “Do It,” “Never Mind,” “Move On,” and “Tell Me.” This led to releases for labels including, Get Physical, Rekids, Saved, Viva Music, Great Stuff, CR2 and Defected. Mendo also did remixes for his friend Chab’s Imago Records, and in 2003 he and Chab founded Clarisse Records. Mendo released a string of hits on Clarisse including “Play Me With Your Sound” which Roger Sanchez snapped up for Stealth Records.

Thanks to his tireless production work and infectious DJ sound Mendo reached all the right ears. Luciano was so impressed he signed “Remember” EP to Cadenza Records in 2009 and “Encantos” EP in 2010. This was the beginning of an exciting collaboration which has seen Mendo join the Vagabundos to ignite Pacha and Ushuaia in Ibiza. When he’s not running with the Cadenza crew, Mendo is globe-trotting to destinations as diverse as, Japan, South America, USA , Germany and UK, giving fans a chance to soak up his incredible four decks Traktor sets that blend the best of house, live sampling and techno futurism.

Mendo plays at some of the best clubs on the planet: Womb, Tokyo; Panoramabar, Berlin; Cielo, New York; and D-Edge in Sao Paulo. "The key to a successful party is to get girls dancing. Once they dance, everybody does,” Mendo says. “I just want people to have a good time with my music.”

Mendo is currently working on productions including “Stages of Life” EP for Cadenza, and has a packed DJ schedule. But he thrives on pressure. “It is exciting to produce a song, then play in front of thousands of people and make them hysterical,” he says. “DJing is the best job in the world.”

2000 and One's Best Of Series Vol. 19 (Deep) Techno Pt. II

Luciano has arranged a special series of four releases as part of the celebrations for the fifteen years anniversary of his own Cadenza Records, launching the first one to begin the festivities. Each episode is coming out in a different season of the year; the first one, with the catalogue number 118, is the chapter dedicated to the summertime and contains 5 enchanting tracks with an exquisite sound. This series is just one of the astonishing surprises that Luciano has set aside for the birthday of his beloved label.
The show begins with “The Amazing Lilou”, a crispy ariose tune with elaborated percussions and calypso-flavored synthesizers. “Hiding Hearts” is a latin prelude with pleasant guitars and restful melodies, flowing with joy and peace. “Nabusima” is another Caraibic spell, with noteworthy carefully mixed drums and elevating harmonies. “Magik Mechanics” explores complex broken beats and electronic textures, drawing a colored narration in between a fairy tale and a sci-fi movie. Finally, “Tirana del Oriente”, as disclosed by the title, is a trip into the Oriental ardent magic. A collection of five long summery compositions to accompany our hot pleasing days from the dawn till the dusk, holding our hands during a never ending daydream.
