With over a dozen years in music under his belt and a lengthy discography that includes eight full-length albums and numerous EPs and remixes, Deepchild is a producer who needs no introduction. From Australia before it was a destination of note on the electronic circuit, his early music experimented with dub, broken beat, and other ideas. After moving to Berlin to be closer to the pulse, his sound has shifted towards house, but audible echoes of the earlier influences remain. Caduceus Records happily offers him our latest release, with two contrasting original efforts accompanied by remixes from MRSK and Lad. 

Deepchild leads off with the more floor-focused of his originals, "Pushing Matter", a dirty, hardware-propelled house jam whose grit looks towards the machines that made it. Extreme effects manipulations of the title vocal hook through ring modulators, delay, LFO and filters provide much of the sound palette, accompanied by acid-flecked basslines and hard-jacking drums with a modicum of breakbeat feeling. MRSK forwards the vocals and leans harder on their drum machines for the remix with deeper, dystopian, dancefloor-wrecking results and a similar overall development. "Lazarus" finds Deepchild in more experimental areas as chugging triplets provide tension to the rhythmic base alongside spacey, repeated vocal and synth phrases. Lad turns in another epic refix by  ironing out the rhythmic kinks of the original and taking a lightly progressive house-influenced coda after an extended, heads-down techno workout.

As a resident of Berlin's legendary Panorama Bar/Berghain  club and co-operator of the Vidab label alongside Stephen Hill, Oliver Deutschmann has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in contemporary dance music. Like his imprint's mission to release timeless club music, Deutschmann's own sound remains rooted in classic ideas while smartly pushing them forward with new and innovative production techniques. It's a sound that has earned him support from respected labels like Soma, Aim, and Caduceus is pleased to have Deutschmann for our eighth release with two original tracks backed by remixes from Dutch legend Steve Rachmad and Lad. 

The front-and-center insistent acid line, typewriter percussion, and drum rolls of "Breakdown" reference familiar elements, but it is also clearly contemporary. Eschewing the dirty, thrown-together analogue production common today, Deutschmann controls each sound carefully and builds a heads-down groove unmistakably Berlin in origin. Once the title vocal sample enters, dementia inevitably results, but it moves in a long, slow crescendo rather than a sudden descent. "Braineater" is pacier and superficially less twisted but equally relentless, the gradually increasing drum density custom-made for abuse in Tresor's basement. Sterac's remix of "Breakdown" progresses in sections with each illuminating a different aspect of the original; he then combines them in layers with emphasis on dirty drums to power through.  Ever adept at finding contrasts, Lad slows "Braineater" down to a grinding crunch and adds layers of vocal clips and spaced–out synth for the deepest effort here; his digital bonus mix keeps the drum focus of the original but keeps the slower tempo and spaciness to land between the other versions.

With a lengthy discography on influential imprints like his own Sub Static, Triebstoff, Dumb Unit, Contexterrior, and more, Falko Brocksieper has been a force in the development in deep, minimal sounds for a decade and a half. Working alongside label co-head M.I.A., Sub Static and sublabel Karloff released music from prestigious producers - René Breitbarth, Mathew Jonson, Pan/Tone, DJ Slip, Shonky, and themselves - from 2001-2010 and established the lasting reputation of Falko while identifying their label as a source of quality dancefloor ideas for its decade-long run. If things have been quieter for him since 2011, he has remained active in his Berlin base, and for the 9th release on Caduceus Recordswe proudly offer a pair of originals from the respected German producer with remixes from Petar Dundov and Ladislav.

Following on its evocative, mysterious title, ‘Ocean Machine’ explores aquatic dub atmospheres and clear melodic elements as it slowly accelerates to cruising speed and remains there for the duration exploring these depths. While remaining invested in dubby melody, ‘Loom’ is a tougher techno track driven by a powerful, growling bassline and gritty drum programs that exchange energy with the keyboard parts while slowly gaining momentum. Known for his deeply textured sound, Dundov transforms ‘Ocean Machine’ into an epic that rides to high drama on suspended pads, rolling, pulsating bass, and understated but hard-hitting percussion. Adding vocal samples and more dramatic drum changes to ‘Loom’, Ladislav keeps drive intact but builds on the atmospherics to create rousing peak-time techno. A digital bonus is Falko’s heavily ambient ‘Give up the Ghost’, a submerged journey where static, synthesizer zaps, and incomprehensible vocals build to a subtle climax before slowly fading away.

Caduceus Podcast #11 by Myles Sergé

After several acclaimed releases on Astropolis, Stripped Muzic and Bedrock records in a short space of time, Caduceus Records enlist the French producer for the next 12” slab of techno on the label. 

Benjamin Leclercq (Madben) grew up in Northern France, not far from the Belgian border, discovering electronic music at the end of 90s and delved into the Belgian club scene where underground sounds were already being spun, leading to his first foray into djing when he moved to Lille, back in 2000. It wasn’t until he arrived in Orleans that he began composing electronic music in 2007.

Quickly picked up by the press, he was crowned a ‘Rising Talent’ by Trax Magazine, and is set to follow in the footsteps of his French production forefathers, Laurent Garnier or Agoria, in paving a way for himself through the growing slew of artists out there. Having already caught the eyes and ears of the old techno guard and heavyweight producers including Dave Clarke, Carl Craig, Skudge, John Digweed and Ben Sims, Madben looks set for great heights. 

On ‘Couleurs De Danse,’ Benjamin provides a tempered palette of tracks which flow from red (Danse Rouge), to blue (Danse Bleue), to the veiled and stripped back black (Danse Noire), all taking on different shades of percussive techno. The collection of tracks is then topped off by Brazilian born producer, Urbano. 

2014 has been a flourishing time for Madben with an obvious exponential growth in interest in this young producer - and with a new live show on the horizon, he looks set for greatness.

Oliver Deutschmann is a producer that needs no introduction. Over the last 15 years, his reputation as a producer and DJ has seen continued growth down to, quite simply, his pure passion, diverse track selection and an unambiguous mixing ability. 

He has lit up both rooms of world-renowned clubbing institute, Berghain, where he has played dozens of times since first playing there almost ten years ago. Whilst keeping up with this kind of extensive touring schedule, and being heavily invested in his own productions, the Berlin based artist also finds the time to take the helm of four imprints: Vidab, Falkplatz, Slim Audio and the vinyl only imprint GKNSTR. 

Beyond his own labels though he has released on Soma, Aim, Etruria Beat, Mobilee, and now returns to Swiss imprint, Caduceus, following his ‘Breakdown’ EP last year.

In a recent interview with Inverted Audio, Deutschmann summed up his clear, dancefloor focussed approach which can be heard on Flangers, stating “I don’t really care about any achievement. They [the tracks] have to rock the floor and be timeless.” This new EP sets that straight right away, laying out the agenda for what is to follow. 

Flangers opens with the dark, gravelly, brooding, and heads down techno of the title track - a lengthy, spacious workout which manages still to cut a deep groove despite it’s direct driving force. Similarly, ‘Beast’ paces itself, slowly unfolding all of its treasures as it grows, swells and shapeshifts over the course of just over five minutes of sustained tension. 

On the flip, two heavyweight producers step up to the remix: Germany’s Markus Suckut and Dutch producer, Jeroen Search. Suckut’s interpretation of Flangers keeps much of the understated groove and tension of the original whilst dipping it in a more shrouded cloak of murky techno. Jeroen Search on the other hand pitches up the pace with a crisp, high-hat driven dive into the deep.

After a short break, Caduceus Records returns with a weighty techno 12" by long-time friend Pascal Hetzel. The Berlin-based producer delivers four storming tracks that cleverly translate the 90s techno heritage into the present. On "Motion Blur" a hypnotic bleep sequence gives way for majestic pad sweeps just in time for your serotonine rush. "Stutter" is more restrained, with a modulating chord sequence and sturdy drums, while "Timelapse" catapults into darker territory filled with industrial shrapnel and an extra bit of high-octane paranoia. "Strobe" is the fittingly titled closer of the ep. A pummeling piece of monochrome techno hypnosis with a massive kickdrum drenched in reverb and icy atmosphere.

Berlin-based Pascal Hetzel returns to Caduceus Records with a new slice of gritty industrial-tinged techno and finely tuned sound design. "Noxious Stimulus", the EP's title track, is a heavy peak-time filler with a mesmerizing bleepy modular sequence on top of rough monochrome beats. On her remix, rising talent Denise Rabe cranks up the paranoia and turns "Noxious Stimulus" into an unrelenting pitch black grinder. "Pain Tolerance Threshold" starts off as hefty with yet another dose of metallic atmospheres and crushing modular sequences, until a bright pad appears out of the dark. Proper techno goodness for the wee hours in your favorite warehouse.

With a background as a promoter, DJ, and producer going back to 1995, Sammy Goossens is a veteran par excellence in today’s techno scene.  Starting off with production work on respected techno imprints like Rotation, Re-Load, Tresor, and R&S, he has spent time co-producing for legends like the Suburban Knight and managing Jay Haze’s Contexterrior and Tuning Spork labels. Alongside friend Marcus Vector, they started the Toys for Boys imprint in 2004 and put out a prolific string of releases from top minimal house names like Quenum and Jona while pushing forward their own careers as producers. Now based in Berlin and as active as ever, Sierra Sam honors Caduceus Records for our fourth release, featuring remixes from Jacob Korn, Oliver Deutschmann, and label head Lad.
 
Witty, drum-machine heavy, and expertly wrought, Dilemma makes a strong statement concerning Sam’s long experience. It’s in many ways a throwback acid jam, but clever sound design separates it from common Chicago imitations, and the change-up in the second half takes things out in a deep, upbeat mood. Rising star Jacob Korn’s reverb-heavy remix thickens the atmosphere and dirties up the drum machines, but Korn again navigates away from old school homage with a strange, floating melody that hovers uneasily next to the steadily-hardening jack of the percussion. Darker is Oliver Deutschmann’s heads-down, techno-leaning interpretation, which loops the drums and melodic hook before heaving bass joins in and changes the mood from modernistic techno to something more idiosyncratic. Lad takes a contrasting angle and brings a heavy dub influence in the skittering, delayed drums and thickly echoed pad while the core charges directly towards the floor.

Based on a discography that stretches back to 2006, Dachshund has long been one of the leading figures in Switzerland’s electronic music scene. Initially making his appearance in 2006 on Num Records, he quickly struck up a lasting relationship with co-chief Quenum; the two remain collaborators to this day both as studio partners and co-curators of the Clapper imprint. Dachshund has since released on many storied dance labels: Ilian Tape, Harthouse Mannheim, Perspectiv, Contexterrior, and frequent home Highgrade Records. Such a pedigree alone justifies his peers’ respect, and Caduceus Records is proud to present The Yellowstone EP, featuring remixes from Gerome Sportelli, Arttu, and Lad. 

Dachshund’s original version of Northern Steam sets up a powerful, rolling groove with obvious depth as foundation. Clear dub influences play against shifting drum fills and generous use of melody for an organic and uncommonly expressive whole; a pause in the breakdown where the pads swell, then slowly fade away, is particularly poignant. Next, Arttu comes with a druggier take on Dachshund’s ideas that jacks in old school Chicago fashion. A pitch-wavering sequence throws things off balance, and the drums gradually intensify to full-throttle beatdown as Space Invaders make 8-bit bombing runs. Lad’s long introduction of barreling kicks and slowly phased dub sequence dramatically gives way to large swaths of the original melodic line, but after this breath he returns directly to charging techno with a small section of the melody near the end to provide a moment’s respite. Veteran Frenchman Gerome Sportelli’s adroit rethinking channels Jamaican dub horns to arouse discerning listeners, and his taut tech-house drums keep the tension high for its entire eight-minute duration.
