This exhibition soundtrack, created by Bárbara Salazar and Alejandro Cohen of dublab, reflect McQueen’s vast, eclectic, and at times unpredictable musical taste that defined his runway shows. The soundtrack’s jarring changes and contrasting choices aim to not only reflect on, but also provoke a conversation about the meaning of McQueen’s work in the context of our present times.

With selections that range from classical, to post punk, dance, and pop, Bárbara and Alejandro try to not only represent the artist’s choices but also respond to the legacy of his work.

Post Coup / New Coup represents an Argentine musical era sparked by the fall of the military dictatorship in 1983, and the dawning of a democratic government.  The music scene in Buenos Aires and neighboring cities was greatly affected by the political climate and sudden wave of influences from Europe and the US, that flooded the country almost overnight with the arrival of democracy.  The artists included here, range from mainstream bands with top 10 hits, to obscure acts who only released their music on small cassette labels.  The songs chosen for this mix don't necessarily reflect the most popular tracks of the time but creativity and the common thread of an extraordinary era unites them. - Ale

dublab was commissioned by Wende Museum to create the soundtrack of the David Bowie exhibit that is taking place starting April 1st, 2023.

“When Wende Museum asked me to create a soundtrack for the David Bowie exhibit on his trip to Russia in 1973, I knew I was up for a daunting challenge.  Where to begin? What approach should I take? and how can I make this soundtrack more than an educated guess.  I ultimately settled for the idea of taking a snapshot of the times… just like the many photos in the exhibit.  1973 was an important year in Rock history, just as every year was around that time.  The musical landscape was ever evolving at such pace that, except for a few exceptions, to include something from 1972 would have been outdated; and anything past 1973 would have represented a new reality, that with the advent of punk music, music from a year later would have been unimaginable at the time.  So again… the answer was in exploring the music of that year that was in Bowie’s orbit.  Starting with selections from the album he released in 1973 (Aladdin Sane), including productions and collaborations with artists such as Mott the Hoople and Lou Reed, and artists that would become collaborators in the future (Brian Eno, Queen) the musical universe Bowie was part of at the time was rich, adventurous, and moving at a speed comparable to the train ride he took to Russia.  Bowie was a complex artist, someone that absorbed everything around him and wasn’t afraid to explore the outer edges of musical trends of the time. This mix offers a glimpse into what he most likely was being influenced by at that moment that went on to define later work such as “Low” and “Station to Station”.  With a heavy dose of Krautrock, a foot in experimental music, and a solid presence in the so called glam rock scene of that era, this mix intends to imagine David Bowie’s mindset at a moment in his career when he was most likely a step ahead of the times with lots of time to reflect and listen to new sounds while riding the Trans-Siberian Express.”

Cafe Ale’s Third Age is his 5th release and his most ambitious to date.  Featuring multiple collaborations, including Gemma Castro, Luis Perez, and Pharaohs among others, Third Age touches on many genres and influences.  You can hear movers that might be found on a '90s dance floor, audio experimentation from the '80s and songs from a soundtrack of a movie that's never been made.  Mastered by Jake Viator with artwork by Tom Kuntz, Cafe Ale’s Third Age is a wild ride that reveals new layers with every listen.

he mix created for DJ Pareja’s Fun Fun series includes songs from artists never heard from before... and who maybe don't really exist.  Digging deep from the archives of Cafe Ale’s collection, this mix brings out fantastic '90s gems followed by rhythms from Jamaica, South America, and Africa - some current and some from the past. The collection culminates in an acid trip for a dance floor of one.  The questions you’ll beg your mind to answer are: is this all real and where do these sounds come from?  Take whatever you need to take, blast this mix in your living room, and dig deep into the sound vessel of your soul.

Cafe Ale is the project of Ale Cohen, a musician and producer based in Los Angeles.  His work over the years includes the bands Pharaohs, Psychic Powers and Languis as well as numerous collaborations and production work with a wide range of artists. Cafe Ale was borne out of Ale’s studio, named affectionately by his friend Diego (aka Suzanne Kraft) who was offered a cup of coffee from Ale every time he visited.  

This account serves as a space to include Cafe Ale tracks but also to compile the various mixes created for many platforms.

At first Cafe Ale was simply a vehicle to showcase the work created in the studio by Ale and many of his friends.  Although this continues to be the case, it has also turned into Ale’s “solo” project, ultimately being a mix of the two.  Cafe Ale draws inspiration from dance, balearic, electronic, '60s, post punk and experimental music. As done from its first release on Cooper Saver’s Far Away label, each release is masquerading as a mix, something like a performance from the legendary Cafe Del Mar in Ibiza known for its famous mixtapes.
