For the 8th installment of Naked Gums, Vanja dives into the depths of Milan's
underground scene, spotlighting the spellbinding sounds of Haunter Records.
From otherworldly folk melodies to eerie dub landscapes, the mix navigates a
terrain tinged with spiritual undertones and synthetic resonance. It represents
more than just a sonic journey—it's an exploration of musical experimentation
and psychedelic intentions that offers a glimpse into a world where echoes of
the past intertwine with visions of the future. Delving into themes of precarity
and the uncanny, Vanja invites listeners to confront the ghostly and surreal,
examining the interplay between darkness and playfulness, wonder and
fascination, melancholy and beauty.

Takuroku has been supporting new work by artists made during lock-down, but now and again we’ll be releasing lost archival gems that we feel need to be heard. This is one of the latter: A fiery session between two key players in OTO’s international community, featuring Denmark’s Julie Kjaer (saxophone) and Thurston Moore (guitar), recorded at neighbouring experimental music hub The Hundred Years Gallery.

Fans of Rudolph Grey/Arthur Doyle and Kaoru Abe/Masayuki Takayanagi explosive symbiosis will relish here in Julie & Thurstons’ bellied roars, tonal dips and dives and thick sheets of sound. Ecstatic spiritual crescendos emerge and collapse, but during which never lose their sense of focus and imaginative interplay. Here’s hoping this duo can play again once things are back to normal (whenever that maybe be).

50% of OTO’s share of the proceeds of this release will be passed to Hundred Years Gallery. Please support their great work in the experimental music community.

As you can imagine we are under huge pressure at the moment and are working flat out to ensure Cafe OTO survives this. The impact of this situation is extremely acute for small venues like ours and we need all the support we can get to pull through. Please donate what you can, if you can. Thank you. 

Cafe OTO opened in April 2008 with the aim of providing a home for creative new music that exists outside of the mainstream. It comprises one large cafe/performance space open during the day serving food and drink with an evening programme of live music almost seven nights a week. 

OTOROKU is part of OTOProjects - a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC) that has been set up to manage the programme at Café Oto. Any profits from OTOROKU are put back into supporting what we do and will help us to continue programming the best musicians and performers from all over the world.
