Ambient sorcerer &RUE returns to Unbeyond Anthologies with a new evolution of his style, the “BLUEPRINT” EP.

Haunting as ever, &RUE’s mastery of atmospheres is yet again on full display across this new 5-track project. Icy drones and distant pianos make for a decidedly more melodic project when compared to “The noble and great ones”, while still being profoundly chilling.

The far-off calling of mysterious melodies in “regaining sentience” and “qualms” bring a sense of warped groundedness, while songs such as the opener “SYNOPSIS” return to the ghostly soundscapes that &RUE has perfected.

"With ‘BLUEPRINT’, I wanted to challenge myself further with my ambient sound. As an artist who works with live/acoustic instruments more than electronic, I was curious to see how far I could push, extend an idea without giving myself a time limit. With every track having a base structure of a spur of the moment improv piano recording, I took the electronic manipulation and turned it up to an eleven.” said &RUE.

“Whilst borrowing traits of ambient noise wall, hauntology, drone, dark ambient, and field recording, I aimed to create another seamless flowing project as well. One that feels better connected than previous endeavours. For a five-track EP, I only used three project files. Canonically, there is a beginning, middle, and end."

Degradation Loops was a 16 day composition that gradually and completely 'bit crushes' my 2015 album Yellow Bell. Produced for a group show at the 55 Sydenham Rd, Marrickville gallery in Sydney, a process of sonic destruction unfolds in response to visual artists destroying and reassembling their work, to create new work, and to question the dominance of commercial imperatives within art. Here is a 14'48" time lapse edit of the 16 day composition, 2016.

Naima Karllson treats us to deep searching improvised recordings on 70s organ and vector synth. Originally recorded in Jan 2020 for an installation by Gery Georgieva at Cubitt Artists in London, Naime later reworked the piece, transmuting the material into '[Vital organs] I. In it, slow winding motifs and melodic washes find their feet in a melancholic dirge. Lines of sound open up and unfurl, revealing over time a fragile inner structure. Like the work of her grandparents, Naime's music is rooted in the soil of the earth but gradually lifts itself skywards, finding solace in both the physical and digital world.

The track is accompanied by a video collage by Naime: "The video is a collage of still and moving found images that journey through the organ track on an internal and universal scale. Taking influence from the title, protection and the body are prominent themes. The images search for fluid interconnections between micro and macro bodies in the physical, digital and astral realms such as far-off stars, cell phone devices, Dogon astronomy drawings, bodies of water and our central heart space." - Naime Karlsson

Anything to do with crisps (especially Tyrells) gets our resounding support here at OTO. Two of the most mischievious experimentalist in our community - Louie Rice & Luciano Maggiore - share with us an extended piece cyborg text piece that acts as an instructory rhythmic prompt to munch on the salty snack. Florian Hecker has experimented with similar computer voicings before, but there's not quite anything comparable to this gloriously dry, candid and obscene opus. Concrete poetry for the flaccid digital age (and for fans of crisps).

"58 minutes of music assembled using recordings of an online digital voice synthesiser reciting an exhaustive list of permutations of the words NO PA PA ON. Pauses in speech are punctuated with a bass tone and could act as a prompt to eat a crisp.

NO PA / PA ON is a performance series that started in Cafe OTOs project space and is often mispronounced."

"Listening is and always has been at the core of The Quiet Club’s (Danny McCarthy & Mick O’Shea) work combined with their policy of not discussing the work before or after its performance this has been the hallmark of their practice. 

Unable to listen to each other perform during the Covid 19 Lockdown the duo resorted to Telepathic Listening. Uninterested in Zoom, Facetime etc. the duo decided to each perform in their own separate studio’s miles apart at a given time on appointed days for twenty minutes. The concept was that then the two recordings would be combined together unedited.

On June 16th 2020 (Bloomsday) the artists inspired by Joyce, performed separately but at the same time and the recordings were then combined together unedited to form Telepathic Lockdown Tape No 7.

There are several other works in the series including one which they both played at 4:33pm as a tribute to John Cage. Telepathic Lockdown Tape No 9."

Cafe OTO opened in April 2008 with the aim of providing a home for creative new music that exists outside of the mainstream. It comprises one large cafe/performance space open during the day serving food and drink with an evening programme of live music almost seven nights a week.
