Italian vinyl only imprint Castanea Records has long been on our radar as a quiet achiever, delivering understated releases of the highest calibre to those in the know. Their latest release, CST009, is an EP that might just give of the scene’s best kept secrets it’s time in the sun. The 12” in question is brought to us by label bossman Modbox, aka Patrizio Restelli, who makes his debut on the imprint with the aptly titled ‘The Science Behind First Impression’. The EP delivers 3 of Modbox’s original steam-powered cuts and one remix from minimal techno don Topper.

Our premiere is Halo Effect: kicking off the EP with its raw, analogue vibes. The track strikes the ideal balance between stripped down and heavy-hitting. The drums are sharp and clean, and the arrangements are tight and efficient, locking us into a heads-down bop from the beginning. Add a sprinkling of zips and squelches, and an unintelligible vocal, and you get the mind-bending madness that’s just what the doctor ordered. Unsurprisingly, the track as previously been described as reminiscent of “a hazy Villalobos and Zip after-hours session”. We couldn’t agree more.  

The rest of the EP carries the same effortless groove and raw energy, albeit with distinct moods and soundscapes. A notable mention goes to the EP’s titular track, ‘First Impression’: a playful experiment with unnerving jazz that showcases the producer’s dexterity with the minimal soundscape. All four tracks could easily soundtrack a fuzzy morning at Club der Visionaere.

It’s a slice of sonic heaven that’s sure to leave a lasting impression.

Thomas Stieler is a DJ and producer hailing from Germany. He started his musical journey back in 2005 with an open-hearted, development-adorned definition of electro-acoustic sonic design.

He released his music on various well-respected labels which helped him get gigs across Germany and elsewhere. His forthcoming release "Free Zone" EP will be out via BioTop record label. It features four dance-floor ready tracks that span from deeper groovers to more peak-time beats.

Premiere: Thomas Stieler - Endless

For this release, Fratti brings Night Powder EP. Crafted by rising French artist Havvoc along with a dance floor ready remix by Romanian Straja that will surely be a standout.

Havvoc delivers an undeniable groove with French Alps. Spaced out atmospheric elements drive this groover home directly to the listener. A complimentary vocal is inserted throughout to give the track its finishing touches. On remix duties Straja goes deeper and delivers what will surely be a dance floor bomb.

On the flip side comes White Valley. A rumbling but delicate atmospheric groove filled with intricate drum sequences and vocals throughout.

The latest Partisan release heralds the start of a new concept series; focused on two artists at a time. 

Antoine Sy, from Hossegor in South West France, has quickly established himself via appearances on his own BinarySound and Antam labels, as well as other spots on Novi Orbis, Opia and Rube Goldberg Series. His approach to techno is raw and punchy, perfectly attuned to the Partisan ethic of direct rhythmic structures and cosmically-inclined, acidic synths. “Varivari” is a direct party-starter, while “Damback” gets a little trippier without diluting the impact of Sy’s forthright production style. 

Cabanelas is an ergent Uruguyan artist and co-owner of Montevideo label. On “Kirko” he combines, tweaking monosynth arpeggios with mysterious atmospherics and a deadly sub-bass line geared towards total immersion. “Sobrevivencia” goes deeper still, capturing the spirited retro-futurism of classic 90s techno and giving it a bold, modernist update. Once again the sub-bass takes centre stage, edging into squelchy territory as Cabanelas subtly works the filter for the track’s freakiest peaks. 

Deliciously different and totally tuned for the floor, all four tracks capture the Partisan spirit in style, while bringing the spotlight onto two exciting new talents in the techno landscape.

The Reframed compilations will showcase the musical journey of the 3 heads and friends of Framed Realities on a regular basis.

Reto Erni`s "Iron Factory" clearly shows his love for contemporary house music filled with an extra portion of groove. The bassline will make you dance and the synth pads are full of energy and emotion.
Christian Schiemann`s "Constant" absolutely lives up to its name. A warm, constant and dancefloor shaking loop, build up and accompanied by sharp and crisp drums. 
Squep will take you on a journey packed with all his production knowledge. "All the Things you say" is a powerbomb that is hard to resist and that builds up during the track with a hypnotizing synth, warm pads, and ghostly vocals.
