Deep Focus

Known for crafting infectious rhythms infused with an otherworldly strangeness, UK-based producer CAIN makes his debut on Darker Than Wax with Sarissa - a seven-tracker driven by his signature percussive style.

Written in his native highlands of Scotland and heavily influenced by the mountainous landscapes, Sarissa seeks to fuse together organic and synthetic sounds in unusual ways. True to his ethos of joining the dots between folk music from cultures around the world, the melodies and rhythms explored throughout are tied together by their timeless, ethereal quality. Interlocking rhythms lead the way as the skeleton in this music with cinematic harmonies woven in and out, leading the listener through dark valleys and emotional peaks.

Each tune tells its own story and has a distinct feel from the next – from the jilting rhythms and hazy rave feel of ‘Sarissa’, the crawling basslines of ‘Gecko’, and the ethereal lightness of ‘Marwa’ to the harmonic weight of Kuro. The seven cuts making up Sarissa are equally effective as dancefloor weapons, or as accompaniments on long foggy walks.

Peaceful was the best word to describe their surroundings. Silence seemed to grasp the landscape; it felt as though you were alone out here, away from civilisation and the woes of the world. The grass-covered mountains touched the clouds above, their pointed tips drawing curves and waves along the skyline. Where the mountains didn't sprawl the glistening lakes and rivers did, each one carving their route through the grass. It felt mythical and untouched - it was wonder why those who came here would ever leave.

Over the last decade, Scottish producer CAIN has built a reputation for his percussive creations which have come on labels like Fine Grain, Boogie Box and his longtime affiliates Highlife, the rhythm-indebted sub-label of Huntleys and Palmers. It's Darker Than Wax that is the home for his next release, and marks his debut for the Singapore-based record label run by Dean Chew and Kaye. Made in his native highlands of Scotland, the seven tracks are influenced by CAIN's surrounding landscapes. Rhythm and percussion remain central to each track, and inspirations from places across the world shine through the melodies that sit on a foundation of synthetic and organic sounds.

The master of weirdness strikes again! Rome-based producer A-Tweed (SXDNS222/FREEDL029) is one of those artists who has already achieved the goal of every wannabe music maker out there: He managed to find a characteristic sonority even at an early age. Those who follow the career of the Italian virtuoso, whenever bump into one of his originals or remixes, already know what to expect: A Voodoo-meets-Macumba-meets-Acid dance-floor-oriented cut. Such a concoction resulted in a wealthy and vast output that landed his work on vital labels such as Hard Fist, Melomana, Karakter, Playground, Electric Shapes, Tom Tom Disco, HEARec, Logical, Duro, Fines Tier, Sinchi, and Inside Out Records. The latter, for the second time, to bring to life his forthcoming EP, “Rendezvous in Tangier”. Remixes courtesy of Scottish Highlands-born CAIN and Salons des Amateurs resident Lucas Croon.

Premiered here, CAIN’s version seems to have been extremely influenced by the Moroccan city. His interpretation of “Tangier”, despite being brief, delivers a message as abundant as the original. The hypnotism and psychedelia are still there, but the intense and frenzied aura was replaced by a bucolic and Balearic atmosphere.

Curated by founder Alexander Horne (DJ Uraki Riddim) with Duncan Grant (CAIN) & Rich Jones (Niven Trust) - the compilation has a nod to the trio' & label' Scottish roots. Tracks from Aberdonian T_A_M & Glasgow-based artist Susannah Stark tie illuminate their respective off-kilter patterns with a folk spirit. CAIN hatches a snarling dance floor builder in 'Talas'. Across the North Sea come tracks from skweee boss Beatbully & the enigmatic Center of the Universe - lofi analogue fun with no v-neck seriousness in sight. From fjord funk to the warm rhythmical pads of blanali and the bright uplifting synth-driven 'Whisper' by Lazy H. There are heads down percussive moments too with a new twist from Herman on his myoclonus drum riddims, a teaser for his 3rd EP due in 2023, and a head nodding broken beat number by SP wizard Pursuit Grooves - a long standing friend of the label since her Sonar show way back in 2010! Watch out the Belgiums are coming, D-Nite gives us some of that lowlands rave energy in 'Glistening Dust' - a snappy prelude to his forthcoming 'Echoes EP'. Closing things out, and kicking things off, is the epic 'Glossolalia' by the LA composer Jon Lloyd. An expansive beat-less composition that nods to film scores and floating in space. Watch out for an album from him in the not too distant future.
