after having presented its first live-program and cd "world wide wahab", the cologne-based multinational tabadoul orchestra takes another big step forward:
in  2013 they restart with a new cast and with the charismatic lebanese singer Rabih Lahoud. then they join forces with the acclaimed lebanese visual artists mazen kerbaj and raed yassin to premiere the video-concert "wahab screening".


Mohamed Abdel Wahab, who died in 1990, was one of the most significant and innovative composers of the Arab world. He is regarded as the inventor of the Arab film-musical and also introduced western intruments like electric guitars, -pianos and -organs to the Arab music, thus developing a completely new style. Furthermore, the use of Latin-american dance rhythms like Beguine, Rumba or ChaCha in the context of the traditional Egyptian string orchestra, his innovative way of orchestration and composition techniques as well as a life´s work of more than 1.000 compositions lifts Mohamed Abdel Wahab clearly out of the ranks of usual Egyptian musicians. Mohamed Abdel Wahab is considered, after Sayed Darwish, as the crucial pioneer and innovator of Arab art music. From a contemporary perspective he could even be described as an early Frank Zappa of Arab music...


Between 1933 and the 1950s Abdel Wahab starred in seven musical films where he acted, sang and composed the film music. Unusual for their time, these films introduced a romantic hero who was light-hearted and sophisticated.They portrayed a westernized urban elite society and featured non-traditional music. These films are still immensely popular in the whole Arab world. The video work of Kerbaj/Yassin uses footage from these films and mix it with mazen kerbajs unique live-painting technique.

A cover version of Tipper. The very first track (our) Dave and Steve collaborated on. Like many musicians back then, we were trying to wrap our heads around wtf is this guy doing? It was not an attempt to make something new, or even better out of it. Just backwards engineering the piece as a learning experience. Listening to it beat by beat, sometimes even second by second, trying to figure out all the animal voices in the background. The first lesson: Start gathering tons of found sounds and samples from all walks of life. And beyond.

The album embodies a festival of popular world music coupled with a selection of sounds that are fused with oriental flavors.
Jean-Marie has delicately worked his magic to bring to life this masterpiece of musical art.

German Jazz Award 2018 for the Album Flying Carpet together with Quadro Nuevo
Building Bridges between cultures and to send an indirect message to the audience, creating an positive image about the Egyptian Culture Heritage was the reason why Basem Darwisch founded the German/Egyptian Band Cairo Steps in 2003 .
Cairo Steps merges and combines traditional Egyptian and oriental grooves with modern jazz and classics , using vocal inserts with old Arabic poems . it is a mix between improvisation, classical music and contemporary sounds. The music is influenced by spiritual ethnic music as well as European music traditions and alternates between strong unison rhythms, virtuoso solos and meditative soundscapes. The result is a unique music style and an exciting blend of various cultures
Basem could manage to make Cairo Steps plays the role of the umbrella that has all of the different musical genres and experiences merged together all the way from spiritual chants to modern classics with their own flavor and to pursues the vision of crossing cultural, political and religious borders and building bridges between the occident and the orient. Basem Darwisch’s Vision is to present the audience with a tense spiritual musical experience as language that can help them transcend over their earthly matters and to use the concert to create an atmosphere of tolerance and acceptance of other and different cultures advocating the motto “Music is the bonding force” 
His Vision is also to leave an positive impression about the Egyptian culture heritage through short speeches , visuals and introductions during Cairo Steps concerts in Europe in very well known opera houses and theaters e.g. : Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Philharmonie Berlin, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Prinzregententheater München, Theaterhaus Stuttgart  , Kuwait , Abou Dhabi and Cairo Opera House etc.
