This is a. very beautiful piece and I'm going to recommend it to my band teacher to play next year.

"The Test of Time" piece puts the soloist at the forefront of playing polyrhythms, over-the-barline grooves, and asymmetrical passages while the band plays supportive and common thematic material of my oeuvre in simple meters such as 4/4 and 3/4. The juxtaposition of musical material presents “The Test of Time,” where the combination of soloist and ensemble manipulate the feeling of “beat 1” for each other, the conductor, and the audience.

Raíces, meaning "roots" in Spanish, uses soundscapes, atmospheric elements, and nostalgic harmonies to take a listener through the growth of a tree. Similar material opens and closes the piece. Wind sounds, aeolian sounds, and flute harmonics make up the atmosphere. A group of soloists play the overarching theme, which is always repeated up a fourth, signifying growth and development of our growing tree. As others join in, the tree grows both towards the sky and into the ground. The apex of the work brings the listener to a magical arrival as we musically paint of a picture of the fractals of leaves, and branches flowing beautifully in the wind. The piece comes to a close with the aforementioned atmospheric soundscapes - this time, with the image of a blossoming tree in our mind's eye.

Metaphorically speaking, this tree represents the community that commissioned it: The Rio Grande Valley Flute Fiesta Flute Choir. This piece was commissioned for their performance at the 2024 National Flute Convention in San Antonio, Texas. The RGV Flute Fiesta Flute Choir will combine over 200 students of all ages and teachers from across the Rio Grande Valley in celebration of communal music-making.
