Description:
My Mum and Dad got them selves a new Miele coffee grinder machine, my primary interest was what sound does it make and yes the coffee was nice. I recorded the sounds it made along with some of the side noise of coffee cups clattering and general human voice chatter at the time. The intention was to do some granular audio synthesis with it. The sounds were recorded on my iPhone.

I wanted to experiment some more with the granular synthesis engine of the hardware memory station, the Soma Cosmos. Then improvise over the top of this with my Soma Enner. I had to go through a process to feed the audio originally on my iPhone in m4a (Apple MPEG-4 Audio format) into an analogue signal back to the Cosmos. This process also modified the sound adding charm and mystery.

Ableton Live was used to transform from m4a format to wave format. I then imported that into my synthesiser/looper the CrossFeedFM. CrossFeedFM has a twin delay + gain + feed back system, the gain settings were modulated during the playback, this was recorded and played back to the Soma Cosmos. There are three grain sizes on the Cosmos, small, medium and large, I used the medium here. The Cosmos SUP|COM dial allows altering the extent of how new audio material entering the Cosmos during recording the mix of replacing versus adding audio, this was set to about 70% replacing. The Cosmos also has a setting altering the feedback (FB), altering how long a motive lasts, this was set to about 40%. As each new grain is created how each blurs (BLUR) into the next and the timing (DRIFT), can be control and was modulated during the performance. Ok, that is the coffee grinder done.

Time to move on to the Soma Enner track. Using the coffee grinder track as inspiration, I improvised on the Soma Enner using it's synthesiser engine.

Having recently purchased a drum brush to use with the Soma Enner, the last track features this drum brush exciting the Enner through it's piezo-electric pickup. The entire casing of the Enner, top glass plate, wooden side frame and thin plywood bottom plate all pick up sound waves either transmitted through the air or by direct contact. These sounds can then be further manipulated by the Enner effects, such as the filter section and the twin delay section. The Enner also has a taught spring on its top surface, vibrations from this can also be picked up, excited by the Enner casing or directly by the performer.

These three tracks were then mixed into the one stereo track, the final result, for a short 1 minute 54 second recording, a Short Black Please.

The art work for the composition cover also has a coffee motif, a modified picture of a cup of coffee showing the bubbles forming on the top surface of the poured coffee.

I put together a YouTube video showing this process so you can hear how each layer was added and how it changed along the artistic production process.
