Strut presents a definitive collection of recordings from one of Tanzania’s most revered but short-lived bands of the 1970s, Sunburst. Covering their entire output from 1973 to 1976, this first retrospective features their singles for Moto Moto and TFC, their sole album, ‘Ave Africa’ and an unreleased radio session recorded in Tanzania in 1973.

    The music on Split Infinitive is dark and sparse with thick bass and psychedelically mutated vocal samples. A musical reflection of the sentiment of our day and age. A tone poem.

    Split Infinitive pushes the boundaries of electronic music genres by melding dubstep, ambient, minimal, and drum n' bass elements with curious musical references to Pink Floyd, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Aphex Twin, Led Zeppelin, Plastikman, Prophetnoise, and many others.

A warm, bright, and playful orchestral track with swelling, layered pulses influenced by modern classical minimalism of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Also influenced by Chevy Chase’s “na na na na...” putting sound effects from Caddyshack (thank you very little)

I scored this :30 spot for CiboSF / Brass Ideas / Subaru Asia, for TV / online in 9 Southeast Asian countries. 

My score is an orchestral/electronic hybrid in 6/8 with a nod to Vangelis, and it was nominated for Best Score at 2016 AAU Media Awards.

The ad was shot in Malaysia. The client, MotorImage, is an Asian Subaru distributor who broadcast the spot in Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong & Cambodia.

Nigerian Royal Scam is a vintage, up tempo afrobeat instrumental in the style of Fela Kuti's Africa 70 band. I reworked the drums and added horns in honor of Tony Allen, Fela's pioneering drummer on the anniversary of his death. Attempting to emulate his slinky, flowing groove and trademark tumbling-down-the-stairs drum fills felt like time well spent in his presence. Cheers to the rhythmic architect of afrobeat, thanks for the inspiration.

"Commotion" - Dust Motif

A bluegrass arrangement of Richard Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" to accompany a game involving a flying pig!  I'm kind of crazy about this track. I think I followed the Valkyries harmonic structure through most of the track.  I had to use 9 harmonicas to get through all the chord changes.

THUS ROCKED ZARATHUSTRA: This massive, over-the-top hard rock cover of Richard Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra” (the iconic opening theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey) blasts off with soaring, melodramatic guitar harmonies reminiscent of Queen's Brian May. A triumphant chug riff throttles the iconic fanfare up into the orbit of metal, prog, and grunge worlds once explored by Metallica, Rush, Soundgarden, and beyond... 

Intended for sync placement in comedies, high energy sports, sci-fi, space exploration-related media/ads/trailers. The original Strauss work became became PD nearly worldwide in Jan 2020 including US, Canada, and Mexico.

Cal Reichenbach produces eclectic music for film, TV, and video games. An accomplished guitarist and composer, Cal specializes in emotionally dynamic, rhythmically compelling scores that enhance visual action and propel narrative flow. His work spans a broad range of genres including rock, funk, jazz, afrobeat, Brazilian, orchestral, electronic, and world groove. Cal plays an array of guitar styles as well as bass, mandolin, ukulele, and guembri (Morroccan/Gnawa bass lute) in his productions.

Areas of scoring expertise include show open themes, emulations of any given reference track/musical genre/era, and the integration of ethnic music styles from any desired corner of the world. Tongue-in-cheek musical satire is another CalZone specialty: ironic cover arrangements, over-the-top genre parodies, and other feats of comedic scoring--from subtly sardonic to outrageously hyperbolic--are served with extra relish. 

Cal has worked with Subaru Asia, Bully Entertainment/Cosi Games (for Pelé: Soccer Legend, >7mm downloads), Pilot (for FX, AMC, CMT), Cartoon Network/Adult Swim, Men In Blazers (VICE Sports), Organic, Brass Ideas, Cibo, Evolve Media, Disher Sound (for PlayStation Magazine/Gran Turismo 4), and director Banker White/WeOwnTV.

After a decade of touring, recording with, and producing an array of rock, funk, and jazz bands including the award winning Bay Area afrobeat ensembles ALBINO! and Aphrodesia, Cal earned an MFA in music production for visual media at Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
