[en] “Play My Birthday” is my birthday party in musical form.
I invited artists who have been part of my journey in psytrance to create tracks that would be my gifts: each one carries a piece of history, affection, and shared trajectory.

This V.A. is an affectionate record, an encounter of worlds that have crossed paths in my sound and in my personal life. There are people who have been with me since the beginning and artists who came later to expand, add to, and open new eras alongside me. If my birthday party were music, this would be the sound of "Happy Birthday," and that was the intention of the album: to unite the beginning, the middle, and today in a single story.

“Play My Birthday” doesn't just celebrate my birthday. It marks a turning point, a rebirth, a new phase of my project and my life. And, like any good surprise party, this V.A. arrives with that feeling of:
“nobody was expecting this… and that's what makes it so enjoyable.”

Convidei artistas que fazem parte da minha caminhada no psytrance para criarem faixas que seriam os meus presentes: cada uma carrega um pedaço de história, afeto e trajetória compartilhada.

Esse V.A é um registro afetivo, um encontro de mundos que se cruzaram no meu som e na minha vida pessoal. Tem gente que está comigo desde o começo e artistas que chegaram depois para expandir, somar e abrir novas eras ao meu lado. Se a minha festa de aniversário fosse música, este seria o som do parabéns, e essa foi a intenção do álbum: unir o começo, o meio e o hoje em uma história só.

“Play My Birthday” não celebra só meu aniversário. Marca uma virada, um renascimento, uma nova fase do meu projeto e da minha vida. E, como toda boa festa surpresa, esse V.A chega com aquele sentimento de:
“ninguém estava esperando por isso… e é isso que o torna tão gostoso.”

Angel de la Guardia Live at Mood Ring

With a keen interest in all things hip-hop, Edmonton’s Hood Joplin wanted to find a way to contribute to the culture which is how she found her way into DJing and uploading her mixes online. First discovered by Philadelphia collective Gwappy Boyz who picked up her edits and DJ sets, she released her debut EP in 2016 via Drama Hands - the label who also booked Hood Joplin for her first live set at Rude Haus. 

Since then, Hood Joplin has been waving the flag for high-energy sounds, spanning across footwork, drum & bass and juke alongside the Kudatah crew. Playing shows with the likes of DJ Taye, Flying Lotus, Robert Hood and Chippy Nonstop, Hood Joplin is an RBMA Bass Camp alumni and has also contributed tracks to Repost Network.

Recently releasing the ‘Bank Account’ album in collaboration with Text Chunk on the London-via-Paris label Moveltraxx, Hood Joplin provides a fierce 40-minute mix which showcases her far-reaching influences and we get to know the killer producer a little bit with a quickfire Q&A.

“Music is a healing process for me.  I guess I'm just trying imbue these structured sequenced sounds with a chaotic and maybe more soulful natural flow. Water has always been in my imagery now i think about the growth it provides, but specifically for me and my music progress I’m just excited to share how far I've come.  In a more afrofuturistic sci-fi or even shamanistic indigenous or biblical way of viewing growth and birth and the garden I like the concepts of the Earth itself birthing black people with these HeLa cells from the soil. Maybe these are lullabies to those souls at the softer moments and birth pains when it intensifies but overall its definitely just me trying to make Detroit dance music using the tried and true formulas with some noise from Lansing mixed in there. thanks!”
