Call Me Ace's debut EP, Misinterpretations, is out now!

—More About “Misinterpretations”—

“Misinterpretations” is my first official project that I released once I decided to start rapping again the beginning of 2016. Before "Misinterpretations," I had a monthly series going in 2016 called “Out The Wilderness”, during which I'd drop a new song once a month - as a way to both get back into the music making habit as well as find my sound. One day I went to the studio in Oakland to record some (unreleased) tracks, and Bay Area legend producer Sean T happened to be my engineer. We kicked it off immediately, and he encouraged me to create an EP as a small introduction of my story and skills to the hip-hop world. He was so juiced by the idea that he offered to produce it all. 

Without hesitation, we developed the EP in under a month and, like that, “Misinterpretations” was born! Out of all the tracks we made, the final tracklist became:

---Behind the Scenes: “2interpretations”—

As soon as “Misinterpretations” was released, I was hungry to drop another project. Not because I was unsatisfied with the EP, but because I fell more in love with making music, performing, and impacting lives with my gift. I was already seeing the fruits of my labor - people reaching out both to encourage me and seek encouragement, offers to perform and inquiries of my next performances, and so on. There were also some people that either hated it or “rebuked” me for what I was actually representing…all the more reason I stand behind the title and decided to make a sequel!

I was feeling the momentum once the EP dropped and felt like I could do so much more. There was just ONE thing. When I created “Misinterpretations,” I had just graduated school and had 3 months of funemployment time. Once the EP was out though, I was passed the 90 day mark at my new job, and the work was only beginning to increase.

Nonetheless, I didn’t want the job to deter my ability to work. Far from it, I owned the new season in my life and became a “consultant by day, rapper by night.” Literally. Many nights after tremendously long work hours, I would stay up even later to make music or carve out pockets of time during my commutes to jot down some bars. I had to be even more efficient with my time and also just depend more on prayer. All was worth it though in the end, as I had quite a bit of songs to choose from for the making of “2interpretations.”

After “Misinterpretations”, I met several other producers and artists across the US that heard the work I did with Sean T, believed in the vision, and was down to collab with me on the “2interpretations” LP. I’m excited to have a new project that has increased in sonic diversity while expanding on the story and foundation we set with the first installment of Misinterpretations. The final tracklist for “2interpretations” is:

In his new single, “Gold Cuffs,” Call Me Ace explores the meaning of success and the American Dream by juxtaposing his two careers: the lucrative white-collar job and the passion project. Both careers are advancing and increasing his recognition at the expense of his physical energy and mental health. With only so much time in the day, the conflict between the two careers is forcing him towards an ultimatum. But as a first-gen immigrant born into poverty, which do you choose: money and social status, or the freedom to pursue your passion? What if you don’t actually have a choice? Ironically, the song features Ace’s music alter ego, High Grade.

In his latest single, “Résumé,” Call Me Ace continues on his theme of having two official résumés - one for the corporate world and another for the music industry. Specifically, this song is a personified outcry of someone frustrated with having to disguise what truly gives him life for the sake of what society deems as a “professional career.” It seems in this song, Ace demonstrates how he code-switches between environments in order to maintain both jobs concurrently while navigating the uncertainty, obligations, and external (and internal) expectations.

At Facebook, when people leave the company, they typically write an internal post recapping their learnings, showing gratitude, and calling out the people and experiences that made their time meaningful. Call Me Ace, however, decides to take a novel approach for his "this is my last day" letter - an amusing approach that everyone will remember. He ensures that although he's leaving Facebook, Facebook can't leave him. Because after all, he quips, "you can't spell 'Facebook' without A-C-E."

From the outside looking in, Call Me Ace’s tenacious pursuit of dual-careers may appeal to some and be too grandiose of a goal for others. Nevertheless, Ace keeps his eyes on a destined “extra spot at the top.” Accrediting God and his innate survival instincts, Ace refuses to let an outsider’s projections of self-doubt and obedience to the status quo affect his persistence. And if that makes him “stubborn,” then Ace reminds listeners that he’ll proudly carry the title.

The recent social uprisings, stemming from years of systemic racism and oppression, has proven that Black communities are still perceived as invisible and inadequate. When the odds are stacked against you, and your presence is already a rarity, “occupational progress” really feels more illusionary than reality. Ace delivers these matter-of-fact observations with a storyline so assertive that the mellow production feels both satirical and, once that “out of office” message goes up, relieving.

In The Office

As an ode to his wife, Call Me Ace reflects on what it means for him and his life-partner to grind and achieve, both individually and together. Both are hard-working independent individuals that choose daily and with intention to work and build a legacy, and the results are more than just bettering their own lives but, instead, living with significance and enriching the lives of those around them. Their unbreakable bond is admirable, and with the help of guest feature, Taylor Taylor, Ace also emphasizes that the real “goals” of their relationships are the ones they make with each other.

Continuing the story from the intro track “In The Office,” Ace tells the other side of his dual career, and shares insights gained on his journey as a successful independent artist. Although the entrepreneurial path comes with a freedom that isn’t felt within the confines of a corporate job, Ace nonetheless narrates how the independent business path also brings its own set of challenges, such as the right to establish boundaries between inquirers, the need to stay grounded amidst rising success, and the fight to preserve creativity when juggling so many demands.

When was the last time you celebrated a small milestone? As a way to pause and ground himself while he plots for the future, Call Me Ace expresses gratitude for the experiences gained on his entrepreneurial journey. From the support received from influential figures to his increasingly international fanbase, Ace reminds his audience in this bonus track that a really big dream is really just a series of super small wins. Moreover, he wants to encourage you, and himself, that rewarding yourself when you achieve a short-term goal is a great incentive for raising the bar, expanding your vision, and pushing you one step closer along the journey.

What’s your soul worth? On the journey to success, there are moments when an individual comes face to face with their sacrifices. Although there are perks to having, what one might call, a “prosperous life,” Call Me Ace can’t get caught up in the world’s definition of “status” when he values other things as more important, such as supporting his family, many of whom he left on the East Coast to pursue his purpose. His past hard decisions, in a way, have been bearing fruit, but the pain of the sacrifices he’s made to get where he is now can get so overwhelming that, in this moment, he needs to take a “sick day” from work. From responsibilities. From life.

“Ambition” and “motivation” are surface level descriptors for what drives Call Me Ace. “Survival” is a much more accurate reflection of his grit and approach for winning at life. More importantly, this song shows the harsh reality that Ace, like many immigrants and people of color, experience daily. However, no matter how his reputation grows, his main objective is to overcome and excel in a world that stacks odds against him.

In an age of instant gratification, placing worth in materialistic items is an inaccurate representation of one’s worth. In fact, the awe attached to the perception of owning material things can be addictive—but is that perception worth more than life’s intangible treasures? True to his mission, Call Me Ace demonstrates how he navigates through life and how he prioritizes the things he considers valuable. Building generational wealth, staying true to his faith and mission, and building an inspirational legacy, all hold more value to him than, let’s say, buying a Tesla (even if he has access to one!).

Although credible accolades and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities are worth real-time praise, nothing in life comes easily. In this song, Call Me Ace debunks common misconceptions about achieving his success and gives the blueprint for his life motto: “live a rich life instead of a life full of riches.” Through telling stories of different interactions from his career track, Ace encourages listeners to put in the work in order to become an honest and genuine individual who is committed to a grind that will pay off. He also makes a very clear distinction between people that “say” they support you, and people that “actually” support you. The two are not the same.
