We are stoked to announce our forthcoming episode with Rat Life Records founder Credit 00! The Leipzig based old-school pioneer and head of the Uncanny Valley Sub-Label will spin some records on our next showcase. With numerous releases on different Labels such as: Bordello A Parigi, Chiwax, Mechatronica & Pinkman he’s always busy keeping the style alive. Genre boundaries are not familiar to the synthesizer enthusiast Alexander Dorn, who is highly inspired by 90’s Hip-Hop culture which led him through various musical phases, enjoying Classic Electro, Body Music, Chicago House, Detroit Techno or New Wave.

Intergalactic Rhythms w/ Credit 00 - 01.04.21

With ‘100% Dope’ we find Central Processing Unit bringing up their hundredth catalogue number, and you’d struggle to find a more fitting artist to ring in a century of releases for the label than Cygnus. The one born Phillip Washington has been with CPU since the very beginning, his 2012 LP ‘Newmark Phase’ representing the first record ever released on the imprint. That album’s combination of textured techno and grizzly Drexciyan electro set the tone for CPU perfectly, and it’s no surprise that Cygnus has returned to the Sheffield imprint several times down the years.

While ‘100% Dope’ is an expert demonstration of what Cygnus and CPU do, this EP also shows just how much both artist and label have grown over the past nine years. At its heart ‘100% Dope’ is a set of prime machine-funk from a master of the form, but these are also some of the most daring and innovative tracks that Cygnus has ever produced. 

Take opening cut ‘Bad RGB Controller’. In the undulating synth lines we have a ghost of grime as well as Drexciyan drive, and as such the track reminds one as much of Mr. Mitch or Last Japan as it does, say, Dopplereffekt. Furthermore, ‘Bad RGB Controller’ shifts gear around the halfway mark into a highwire electronica mode which has the wit and spark of prime Bogdan Raczynski. Entries like ‘Float Back To The Surface’ are similarly unpredictable. There's some lovely industrial techno bite to this one - the snare drum will echo in your head long after the party’s died down - but Cygnus periodically pulls out the rug from underneath us with passages of impressionistic texture that almost border on sound art. 

‘Float Back To The Surface’ is one of a trio of vocoder-led jams here. On ‘Throwing Shade’ we hear I-F and Egyptian Lover, with Cygnus’ vocals clattering around like pronouncements from some funked-out robot overlord atop hissing-piston drums. Then there’s the enticingly-titled ‘CPU Records’. ‘CPU Records’ delivers all the crisp electro snap we’ve come to expect from a record emblazoned with that signature black-and-white artwork, yet this thing is also widescreen and cinematic in ways that demonstrate the maturation of the Cygnus sound. With a wicked vocoder vocal that celebrates the label’s many achievements, ‘CPU Records’ is a victory lap tune if ever we’ve heard one.

Central Processing Unit keep it 100 on for this new EP. ‘100% Dope’ by Cygnus is CPU’s 100th catalogue number, and the Texan producer delivers on the promise of the record’s title with a collection of brilliantly unique electro joints.

For this month's Intergalactic Rhythms, we will broadcast live from the Sleeve++ record store in Leipzig, where Clear Memory will showcase their signature all-things-electro sound in a special 3 hour takeover with crew members Milium and Rekorder.
The label is well known far beyond the borders of Germany and not only since their latest release from January 2021 - which hits diggers hard with “Speedy Beats, High Energy - Electro deeply saturated with rap samples and breaks”, as they describe the sound of CLEAR005.
We are very happy to have these guys with us for the next episode!

For mix #077 we welcome long-time friend and sister, Hazra!

Not many positives have come from COVID-19 but Lauren finally taking the plunge into mixing has been a definite plus for everyone, whether you know it yet or not.

Now Glasgow-based but originally from Dundee, we have partied with her long before Hilltown Disco days.  From Thursday-Sunday sessions at our beloved home of the Reading Rooms, to infamous Commercial Street parties, Hazra has always had the ear for killer tunes and has really just always got it - which can be felt in this mix.

The set was recorded mid-isolation when she had COVID which makes the result even more impressive.  A mix for the dancers and for the nights of the future.

Mix #087 comes from the hugely talented, Lewski!

Lewski released his first solo record at Patron Records, based in Amsterdam in 2017. The diverse likes of artists on his first release ensured he will never stop. After the first one he released his second at Darko Esser’s Wolfskuil. After those two his reputation of blending acid, electro and several styles together get noticed by Or:la. In 2019 Lewski had the opportunity to release the first EP on her fresh new label called: ‘Céad’.

In 2019 the record at Or:la’s label wasn’t the only record he put out. A single track ‘Artificial Beings’ (Support by Helena Hauff and Laurent Garnier’s Tsugi Electro mix CD) V.A. and recently ‘Bicameral Mind EP’. Both came out on his homebase Patron Records. 

Even though Utrecht-based Lewski has only just begun to make waves in the scene, the gig section of his resumé speaks for itself with appearances at De School, Zeezout, Awakenings and Twitch in Belfast. Don’t forget his local club Was in Utrecht where he also played his first Boiler Room set and completely rocked it.

Lewski’s perspective on performing as a DJ is all about finding that perfect moment and choosing precisely the right frequencies to get everybody’s vibe in the room on the same wavelength.

Starting our intergalactic journey this year with Leipzigs finest Dj Detox aka Gnista, not only resident at Mjut but also night manager and part of the orga  team behind the club. Born in the Osterzgebirge, Dresden raised and now based in Leipzig he is providing us with various releases on labels such as R.A.N.D, Uncanny Valley, F.T.P, Mechatronica & Brokn Toys, to name a few. He first made contact with making music by playing guitar in several small band projects, from there he started to collect dubstep vinyls and later figured out how to produce his own beats with Ableton. Since 2011 he has been inspired and teached a lot by Steve Kasper aka Steve.e and the Sub Sickness Crew from Dresden. Now his unique style ranges from electro breakbeats over to uk garage and jungle sounds all the way to classic house. We are very happy to kick off the year with this machine warrior on january 7th, 6pm CET!

For our next episode we invited Ambient-Dadaists Technik AG. With their hybrid live-set between turntablism and synthesizing these two sound designers creat dynamic soundscapes with floating textures and sharp contrasts. Besides drones and beats you will also recognise obscure voice samples and field recordings, impulsively arranged, somewhere between techno and musique concrète.
This one is going to be special in many ways: we are broadcasting live from the Eckladen location on Karl-Heine-Straße with a special light and video installment by trq_billy, on february 4th, 6pm CET.
