The Calvert Journal Mixtapes

Cream Soda are two young Moscow-based producers, Dima Nova and Ilya Gadaev. After only a year of producing house music, the duo's tracks have ended up in DJ sets by XXY, Jimmy Edgar, Bondax, and DJ Caspа; the pair have featured on international blogs like OnlyVibez and in glossy magazines like FHM. Cream Soda's music is full of the warmth of vintage synthesisers, classic house vibes and captivating vocals. Cream Soda is honest, festive house music with a late Eighties-early Nineties groove that sounds great in any decent club.

Our new playlist, handpicked by Moscow-based producer and one of creators of Rad movement Miracle Libido, indulges in heart-warming nostalgia with analogue scratchiness and ambient chill. Featuring some of the pioneers of Soviet jazz and electronic music - like b-boy favourite Mikhail Chekalin and 1980s Bashkir wunderkinder Dustar - it teleports you back to the times when synthesisers looked like spacecraft and bands were named after distant stars.

The Mixtape 6 - Miracle Libido

Anton Zap is one of the key figures of Moscow underground house music. He started collecting vinyl at a very young age and began his dj career in the 1990s. He has been a resident at Moscow's Propaganda club for eight years, shaping the tastes of the city's beat-hungry crowd. Zap is one of the most internationally recognised Russian electronic musicians and works with the most influential labels and at the best techno clubs but he rarely talks to journalists and remains an enigmatic figure. The mix he created for The Calvert Journal reflects this sense of mystery: dark, obscure and sophisticated, it's a real refined gem.

On Monday 11 June 2018, Calvert 22 Foundation and UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies were pleased to present a panel discussion exploring tensions between art, gender and the struggle for reproductive rights in contemporary Poland.

The event ran alongside the conference 'Impacts of Gender Discourse on Polish Politics, Society & Culture' at UCL School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies and Calvert 22 Foundation’s exhibition 'Family Values: Polish Photography Now'.

About the speakers

Agnieszka Graff is an associate professor at the American Studies Center, University of Warsaw, where she teaches US culture, literature and film, African American studies and gender studies. She has authored five books of feminist essays in Polish, is an activist and media commentator, a founding member of the Women’s 8th of March Alliance and co-organizer and speaker of Congress of Polish Women.

Aneta Stępień is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies at Trinity College Dublin where she lectures on Polish culture and literature, and on gender. She is the author of a comparative study of the literary expressions of shame, Shame, Masculinity and Desire of Belonging. Reading Contemporary Male Writers, published by Peter Lang in 2017.

Hannah Zafiropoulos is Curatorial Assistant at Calvert 22 Foundation and assisted with the exhibition Family Values: Polish Photography Now.

Urszula Chowaniec, Ph.D., is senior teaching fellow and researcher at School of Slavonic and East European Studies University College London.

Poland Today: Women’s Rights, Art And Visibility

Set against a backdrop of the dreamy mountains of Labëria in southern Albania, Washed by the Moon, British/German filmmaker Dan Shutt’s directorial debut, is a rich journey through the region’s musical history.

Podcast on Russian film: great heritage and visionary future

his month’s mixtape comes from Nikita Zabelin, a Yekaterinburg-based music producer and party promoter. Zabelin has combined his insight into the Russian electronic music scene with his previous experience of producing soundtracks for fashion shows to create a deliciously dark album of contemporary techno. The mixtape features previously unreleased tracks from young electronic musicians from the Urals and beyond, exclusively for The Calvert Journal.

The Mixtape 2 - Nikita Zabelin

This month the Mixtape comes from the southern city of Krasnodar, where Evgeny Shchukin, co-owner of the Fuselab label, has put together his take on the best of recent Russian electronic music. Formerly a member of celebrated Krasnodar collective Modul, Shchukin now records bass music as WOLS and ambient under the name Feldmaus. “I don’t really like strict stylistic or generic boundaries,” says Shchukin. “So it was really fun for me to join it all together: ambient, ‘bass’ music, deep and dubby techno and house, plus some speedy juke-trap-blast things and obscure, lyrical beats-and-breaks at the end.”
