I wanted to try and take a simple minor melody pattern and change tempo and direction to make several different parts, and see what happens when you then arrange them all. Here's the result so far ...

The sound heard at the end is the sound of 5.25" floppy drives. It's a sample library I found, and I couldn't help but use it, because one of my fond early memories with found sounds and music was when I worked on making copies of the software at my mom's software company, and we had this Bernoulli machine that would suck in a floppy, write to it, and then spit it out. It made the most delightful noises.

Originally started on the Fugue Machine app for iPad, then exported to Ableton Live via Studiomux.

The seed was created with Daniel Avila, and I went ahead and arranged and finished it up. I'm thinking there'd be an actual vocal on it, but for now, I just have some vocal shouts. A happy, slow, groovy, urbany track.

Fun fact #1: The haunting rhythmic piano is actually played in live on my Yamaha grand in my living room, and recorded directly using the built-in mic on my MacBook Pro. I wanted the ambience of the room and the rawness of the built-in mic.

Fun fact #2: Why's the track called Donut? Because Daniel works for a fancy gluten free bakery here in Lower East Side Manhattan, close to where I live, and he brought over some freshly baked donuts on the day we started the track together.

Fun fact #3: That was actually the first time I'd had a donut. Yum!

This is a song about birth trauma.

Did you know that the biggest correlation between any known factor and the likelihood of committing suicide is the experience of severe trauma, such as drowning, strangulation, placenta problems, getting stuck in the birth canal, etc?

And that the tendency is for the suicide to actually mimic the birth trauma.

This from fascinating research done at Karolinska Institute in the 80s, according to Katie Hendricks.

This inspired me to write this song about how the exact way we're born affects our lives in unseen ways. We can keep on fighting and fighting the same issues, but if we don't address the underlying deep pre-language trauma that is still stored in the body, we're not going to get anywhere.

Think of this song as my version of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way", only it's referring to the specifics of the way you were actually brought out of the womb and into independent being.
